Veronika Zhilina

I hope she gets approved. She won't make this Olympics but she still could make junior and senior Worlds.
Country changes are only possible before July 1 in singles. This ‘news’ is from a non-sports website. I don't think they know what they're talking about.

Does anyone know for what reason Russia didn't ratify a transfer for her? I imagine it would be only a positive for them to have her compete internationally, under any flag.

Today ISU also denied the request for her transfer to Azerbaijan. She has to wait one more year.

Kind of ridiculous, but oh well. Guess ISU doesn't wanna step on rusfed's toes or get involved in their politics. It's a shame for Veronika, but it seems she still intends to transfer (well, I doubt she'd be treated well in Russia after this anyway). I'm sure the rusfed will suddenly have no problem releasing her next year once the Olympics have passed.
Thankfully for Veronika, the jumps seem to come very easily to her, so if she avoids any further big injuries and has no more problems with her back, she should be a real contender for 2030 (and I don't think she would have been one for 2026)

This is just ridiculous. That's after RusFed made all the noise about allowing transfers to the countries with citizenship. They can't win in this rigged system.

I wouldn't be so sure, she's a major talent, she's not Kurakova or Gubanova..
It is hard to imagine they will keep her hostage for another entire year. This is the greatest athletic talent since Trusova. What is she even going to do now? Miss an entire 3rd season? That is diabolical. Completely unethical. Disaster.

It is another case of everyone breaking the very rules they themselves so smugly made, and I am so sorry Zhilina had to be the one dealing with it. ISU supporting RusFed there is just the cherry on top. Maybe she will take time to heal the early-career injuries while training out of the spotlight. She is still only entering the senior-eligible circles and won't be much older than Samodelkina was when she first went international.

I recommend reading this first, making judgements later:

The points made in this article are quite cogent. I wonder if there will be a response from Zhillina or Plushenko. I assume not. On the one hand it is easy to feel poorly for Zhillina, on the other hand it seems there was rather an attempt to slide past official rules that nobody else was. In a rather arrogant way, frankly. It was not a particularly impressive attempt. I wonder to what degree Zhillina herself can be held accountable for this. Likely not much. Which is a shame. She should have been competing in Russia and enjoying her career. There are many athletes in Russia who would fair amazingly, if not win gold medals, internationally, who struggle to podium in Russia, yet still they did not participate in any scheme to leave the competition. It should be quite obvious that you cannot register as a member of the national team, national competitions and receive funding for it while withdrawing a couple days before each start. I am quite in shock anyone in the know was expecting her to be let go under such conditions.

In any case the article above seems quite irrefutable regarding the AZBJ citizenship requirements. I do not know how it would make any sense for someone to compete for a country under such circumstances.

The girl is a victim no doubt. But what AoP (Rudkovskaya) does is obvious dirty business model that should be stopped.

Personally, I find this article a pinnacle of hypocrisy. Ryabova and Litvintzev represented Azerbaijan with no troubles. Zhilina should have been allowed to compete internationally for Azerbaijan if she wants to, and did not compete for Russia internationally for years. It's all a continuation of the serf theater they are running there with distinctively different attitudes shown to different skaters. I hope she moves to Baku for as long as necessary, the way Samodelkina did, and we can finally welcome her in competitions skating for AZ.

I want to see her internationally too. How long did Ryabova and Litvintzev stay out of competition? Zhillina's constant withdraws and maintaining her national team spot is quite a gesture to then ask for a transfer IMO, even aside from the citizenship issues. How long did Rya/Lit stay in Azerbaijan? Visiting twice and taking a picture with a passport is a tough sell, NGL. At least Samodelkina for example actually has Kazakh DNA and family ties.

All Russians had not competed internationally long enough to not require the release from RusFed, period. Their petty tiffs should be of no consequence. If any other country wants athletes on their teams and offers them citizenship in any procedure a country wishes to follow, the athletes should be able to switch without Russian say-so. The international time-out had been served. Extending it with purely internal competitions is RusFed's travesty and ISU going along with it is against athletes. Nationality is specifically something a person can chose. And RusFed should throw its efforts and cash in its bargaining chips, whatever is left, elsewhere by ensuring the future of the young athletes, not destroying it.

Well, I don't know. They released plenty of other athletes. I don't think Plushenko's method was appropriate at all. Constant withdrawals and eating FED dollars. Its about principle. The moral idealism is sort of unrealistic and unfair to place on the FED, be honest this sort of incredible forgiveness and passivity wouldn't be expected from any organization. I'm not arguing for the morality of the FED but its play stupid games, win stupid prizes... Zhillina is stuck between two immorals I definitely feel for her but the world doesn't operate on ideals. I do not think you can place full responsibility on the FED. AOP's handling was very disrespectful and unprincipled. Not sophisticated. Unprofessional and juvenile. Its quite clearly an embarrassment since they haven't even made a public defence. Pretty open and shut. Zhillina is just a lost girl now but it should have been extremely obvious to AOP that things should be handled differently. If they actually cared about Zhillina herself they would have sat back and been patient without risking her career for some sort of statement. She wasnt competing with Petrosian. It would just be a free worlds for Russia. I am honestly pretty sure the FED would've let her go if the procedure was standard. This is mostly on AOP. They played games with her and now she is an unwilling example. Otherwise I agree if Azerbaijan explicitly gave her citizenship in a special circumstance it should be respected.

Haven't posted on here in a hot minute! Nika finally got released to skate for Azerbaijan. And I meant to post these last month, but 18th bday pics...crazy that she's 18 now
