2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Keegan was 7th at his last World championships. He would have been entitled to two non-host GP spots if he hadn't announced things so late.
So either he doesn't want a full season considering his family obligations/physical condition.
Or, he waited to decide about coming back, until he was certain that he could regain his tech and only announcing now that it's done.

Either way, it sounds like a mature and well thought process rather than a YOLO moment. :)

PS1 - great news and Keegan seemed to be on an upward trajectory when he retired.

PS2 - I'd really love Patrick back competing - I only had chance to see him skate in real life once - and if I could wish anyone else to un-retire, it would be him above all others.
If Patrick came back, I'd be the first one to buy tickets to Nationals this year. However, Keegan coming back is weighing in a tad ... with the early performances of Roman and Stephen this year, with Keegan returning and some of our junior internationals competing seniors at Nationals, the men field is suddenly so much more exciting than last year's

I think ladies and pairs are also getting more interesting. Who is going to be the first Canadian woman to land the 3A in competition? Will Maddie stay on top, or will Sara-Maude or a resurgent Gabby Daleman dethrone her? Will Lia and Trent close the gap to Deanna and Max? They have been on an upward trajectory and Deanna and Max seemed to be on a downward one last season. Will Kelly-Ann and Loucas remain your third pair, or will they be overtaken from below? Lots of unknowns for the season to answer!

I was just dropping in to share this news. This certainly makes things more interesting.
WHAT. I was not expecting this. I'm curious if there were rumors around or if this was a shock to everyone. Wow Canadian men are very interesting to follow this season. I'm a Roman fan but again whoever skates best should get the spot. Canadian Nationals are an absolute must watch this season.

They already were last year for me at least.

My hunch : Sara Maude Dupuis. We have footage of her doing it in practice and even in warm up of her SP at CQE. And it looks good.

Women is very exciting... and all of this happened in such a short period of time.

Pairs are indeed so much fun. I think that Lia is getting better at throws and that's what hindered them before. Deanna and Max had a terrible season with the pressure of being WC last year. Maybe the joy of being at the Olympics will magically bring their mojo back. I am sad that we only qualified two spots because it means that one of our young teams will stay home.... Who will it be ??? I find that Kelly Ann and Loucas are constantly undermarked and I hope that this will change. Fiona is a star... there is no doubt about it... so it just needs to be seen if their quick progress will continue.

I am betting that our junior pairs may compete as seniors as Jazzy and Kiki did last year for nationals... Ava and Yoni have beautiful elements when landed and they are stellar to watch, especially in their LP this year. So I wouldn't rule them out either for a third place... a lot can happen.

What we need is OSMOND to come back...

HPC attendees:

Fee Ann Landry, Kaiya Ruiter and Uliana Shiryaeva are attending along with Hensen/Lickers so they may be up for the TBD spots. Messing's attendance was previously announced.

Bombardier/Mimar not attending due to injury, Gilles/Poirier and Madeline Schizas have scheduling conflicts.

Either or both junoir pairs could snag spots at 4CC this year so I hope they do sr B after JGP

So glad that Hensen/Lickers are there. I am rooting for them to get the TBD spot (and a Challenger). We need to support our "NextGen" senior ice dancers to help get them more international respect.

I was afraid that Bombardier/Mimar are injured. I hope it isn't serious and they are back later this season. As above, they are definitely needed for the future of Canada's pairs skating.

Hensen/Lickers do have a Challenger, Kinoshita Group Cup :). An early one is a good sign in my opinion, they've established themselves as the number five team firmly.

Bashynska/Perron are entered for Skate Ontario Sectional Series October, representing IAM Ontario. As far as I can tell, they're based in France, so it could be an indication that they are representing Canada.

That's not confirmation of it, that'll be the November Sectional Championships entries if they're representing Canada.

Can anyone explain when High Performance Camp is and how they determine entries? Just curious how it is decided to not invite Anthony Paradis and David Li (senior National medalists). If its during or close to Anthony's JGP then I get it. Gabby missing is also a little surprising when Fee Ann and Kaiya are there (Uliana makes sense to be there based on her summer scores).

High Performance Camp is meant more for the skaters going to the Senior Grand Prix. With Paradis and Li, they went to NextGen camp instead as they were aiming for the Junior Grand Prix instead.

I've been thinking about it and I think this is where missing most of the previous two seasons hurt. Fee Ann and Kaiya have scores from those seasons, so they have some idea of where they're tracking. They know that Kaiya has had great free skates at Nationals and that Fee Ann has consistency issues, but has a Challenger medal from her first Senior international competition. Fee Ann's score in the SP at CQE was also from trying a new combo (going for a 3-3 instead of her usual 3-2.)

Fee Ann and Kaiya also both have the Worlds CTES, while Gabby doesn't have the technical content in her free yet to earn them. They may not think she is ready for consideration for the host spot and may need more competitions for a Challenger assignment.

Going to High Performance Camp doesn't guarantee assignments either. Justine Miclette attended last year and didn't have any Challenger assignments.

Wow!!
The High Performance Camp list is interesting.
I love to see Keegan there.
I think Gabby not being on this list is shocking to me. I guess she will have to settle for a Challenger event.
The battle for Women’s TBD spot is between Kaiya vs Uliana vs Fee Ann

They could still give it to KMS. It would make it two back to back GPs but it's not like that never happens.

I was musing recently how the Olympic team event may have worked out if Keegan had not had the positive COVID test and made it in time. Our kids would now definitely have a bronze medal IMO. Maybe he has been thinking about that as well.

But he also has such star quality and is a crowd favourite - his return is good for the sport even if he isn't as strong as before. I agree with Saine, he needs to do a domestic competition first but given he decided this comeback a few months ago, I imagine Keegan has a good assessment of his skill level being adequate to the task.

Last year I didn't see much on the camp unlike in years past. I wonder if / how SC will promote its skaters in an Olympic year or have given up on that.
I'd like to see him just get to compete in the team event. I remember in 2018 he was in the team box for EVERY skate, just soaking it in and cheering on the other skaters. It was cruel he missed out on his chance to actually skate in it in 2022.

As per the potential results in 2026, probably doesn't get us to a medal in the team event... but at least might get us into the conversation
