More withdrawals...Stefania Yakovleva CYP and Kelly Ann Laurin/Loucas Ethier CAN are out

After finding out about earlier that Stefania is now going to the Olympic Qualifying Event instead of Marilena, I was expecing her to withdraw from this. After doing the Robin Cousins Cup last week, it would have been 3 competitions in 5 weeks. That's too many competitions in too short a space of time. She needs to be fresh for Beijing.

I was wondering less about her WD and more about that of Kelly Ann and Loucas...they're not going to Beijing after all...:frown:

Two words: They're Canadian. None of us will ever understand the decision making in Canada.

I'm hoping that they're not injured or anything.

Given that Skate Canada tries to send out skaters with Grand Prix assignments to a Challenger early, this is not one of those withdrawals that can have "they're Canadian" used to explain it. This doesn't seem like Skate Canada not wanting to send skaters out decision making.

I'm hoping that whatever the reason, it's minor and they can pick up another international assignment.

Skate Canada doesn't w/d assignments. What they do at times, is not give them, when we, fans, feel they should give them as our skaters do not get out much. At CQÉ, Kelly Ann and Loucas had a little mishap in the warm-up and decided not to skate the LP. So there was a minor injury just a couple weeks ago. Maybe they do not feel ready to compete internationally after that setback. They were added to SGÉ instead.

Same here.

I suppose they are fortunate that there was a huge gap of 8 weeks between this Challenger and their first GP, Skate Canada. So, there should be no problem with them fitting another Challenger (or maybe two) in and there still being a decent sized gap before their first GP.

Assuming that they are fit and not injured, of course. If there is an injury, it could be trickier.

EDIT: Just saw @4everchan's reply, which was posted while I was writing this. So, there is an injury. In that case, it was probably wise to withdraw from this, and give themselves more time to recover and get in peak condition.

The only Challengers before SCI where the deadline isn't over yet are Nepela (no pairs) and Denis Ten (also no pairs).
Edit: Missed the one in Georgia, that has pairs.

Oh, drat. I forgot that Pairs are not at all Challengers.

Is it not about time that the ISU changed that?!

Hardly any of the regular Senior B's have Pairs competitions, so the Pairs skaters do not get the same opportunities to compete. And there are more Pairs partnrships nowadays than there were a few years ago. And you only have to look at the Junior GP's to see how many partnerships there are that will be coming through to Seniors soon, boosting the numbers further.

It's not fair!

Sorry, this is a pet hate of mine. Pairs Skating should be on the bill at all Challengers and GP's (Senior and Junior)! And have more slots at the Senior GP's and the Majors too!

I couldn't agree more. And I know that at least some of the pairs skaters would like that to change too.

Wow, down to six pairs. But I'm still very excited for this pairs competition. Have Max and Val recovered from injury? Can Yuna/Mori pull off their triple twist? Will Gamez/Korovin keep their Olympic hopes up? Do Metelkina/Berulava build on their momentum? Soon to be seen!

It is an egg/chicken kind of problem... we need more pairs for more competitions and more competitions would favour... more pairs...

That one isn't on Skate Canada's event calendar at the moment. However, Nepela wasn't either initially, and now they're sending 3 entries, so Georgia would be possible if they're ready.

I see several predictions in Skate Picks have Plazas/Fernandez taking a medal in pairs…is there some good news about them that I’ve missed? Did they do well at Champs Camp? I have them low on my list just cause they’ve been out of action for a year.

Kind of ambiguous
Overseas, the ISU’s listed broadcast partners will show the event. If unavailable in your territory, a livestream will be offered on the ISU YouTube Channel.
Peacock and NBC are partners
But nothing on SYWTWFS
Hoping for youtube.
I’m also hoping for youtube, technically two of the listed partners cover my area, but neither has this listed in transmission plans.

Also hoping for Youtube since discovery+/Eurosport has nothing listed. But they're really late with putting tiles up this season. JGP tiles only went up today. So maybe tomorrow...

But that's my point - although there are not as many active competitors in Pairs as in Singles or Ice Dance, the numbers are increasing.

I know it is not the complete picture because not every partnership gets to compete at eligible events (or even gets to compete internationally), but take the number of partnerships in the Season's Best lists for the Short Programme.

Last season, we were back to where we were in the last season before COVID. In fact, as far as the SB for the SP pages go back on the ISU Results website, there were only 2 seasons with more partnerships than there were last season. And that is without the Belorussians and Russians. Once they are back, the numbers will be even higher.

So, with the numbers of partnerships increasing despite being handicapped by not having the country with the biggest field, the argument that there are not enough Pairs partnerships to justify more competitions just does not hold up.
