2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Visa might be an issue for Poland, with a Russian passport. I think UAE would be fine, who knows if SC will pull Reese's assignment though. I hope for a junior B event at the very least, if it's not possible to give her a 2nd spot.
A second JGP is only needed when they have the chance of JGPF.

A second junior B assigned is sufficient for additional competition experience. IMHO.

At this point, I don't think anyone is having their JGP assignments pulled unless they're injured or otherwise unable to compete. And they shouldn't. Skate Canada needs to make decisions on who they send to competitions and they also monitor the skaters. The skaters have to make plans around those decisions.

Pulling Reese because fans think that Victoria should compete there instead would be unfair to her. Victoria hasn't competed the free yet, and she's had two different results with it. She could finish outside the top 10. If her result at Skate Ontario August was similar to NextGen, maybe they would have given her a second assignment. But they decided to give Reese a chance instead.

Hopefully they'll send more skaters to Junior Bs so that they can get experience and standing points.

Yes - Matthew and John - two of my favourite boys who also give me heartbreaks. Let us hope for "no pops" between them at Denis Ten. I do hope Uliana gets an assignment soon! She totally deserves it. Let us hope Maddy shines in her free this time (as well as the short).

Also congratulations to Victoria. I didn't watch all the women but I thought her PCS was a bit low from some of the judges (4's & low 5's not deserved). She should have been over 60 IMO. PCS shouldn't have anything to do with what country you are representing or your skating order. Hopefully she has a great free skate and gets more respect. Ted said she struggled in practice this week so her skate today is even more impressive. Not sure how SC should react if she gets a podium finish or even a top 5 - I like Reese's short (her free is pretty disastrous so far) and really like Hannah, but I wouldn't be upset at all if they gave one of those assignments to Victoria with a good free skate on Friday.
I haven't watched yet, but it looks like it was generally a low scoring event.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. At the same time, if she did as well as Grayson did, I wouldn't be upset if they rearranged the assignments. Yes. It's cruel to think this way. At the same time, if you have a girl who was lowballed in PCS still in contention after the SP, and if she managed to medal there, it would be wise from the federation to think about JWC. A skater with two good placements at JGP , and perhaps even qualifying or nearly qualifying for JGPF will bring with her some PCS bonus. Do I hate that it's like this ? Yes. But I also hate that Victoria receives some very low scores today.... If you look at the TES compared to PCS, there is a very strong gap between both scores.

If Victoria is on the podium, then consider it. But there's still the free skate to come and a lot of close scores in the short program with some good competitors in the mix. Ice is slippery, yes, but the podium is theoretical right now.

Looking at John Kim, he just got his first Challenger assignment. Last season he did not have a good free skate at his first JGP assignment. Skate Canada did not pull him from his second assignment and that seems to have benefited him. Skate Canada has to look at the long-term development of the skaters, not only the short-term results.

I don't think she will get there but, hypothetically speaking, it's possible indeed.

The real issue for me is not that much the spots management, but the lack of said spots. 5 spots for singles when there are 4 boys who deserve them and perhaps even a few more who are younger and could benefit the experience is not good. In previous years, they did spread the "wealth" everyone getting one spot... but this year, two boys are getting two so one of the 4 guys, and IMHO the one with the biggest raw potential, isn't getting anything.

In women, honestly, the spot management is lacking here. There was only one skater (aside Lia) who did well enough this summer and she deserved two spots off the bat. The fact that we are even having to discuss it is showing that there was a lack of vision here. Sure, visa issues, so she couldn't get an early stage. But they needed to do this : give her the two spots, and if she really doesn't do well in the first, sub her out for someone else. Of course, we would have been shocked by this because they don't usually do this :) but now, it's tough to remove anything from Reese or Hannah.

Last season they had six spots in Junior Women. Two to Hetty, two to Lulu. It didn't pan out, now they don't have assignments this year. The men isn't out of line with what they did last season with the women. Someone is always going to lose out, and hopefully there are Junior Bs for those that did.

Victoria had a good NextGen, but Skate Ontario August wasn't as strong. Without having much of a record in Canada, it's hard to give her two spots right off the bat based on one competition. The talk about taking away a spot from another skater is not sitting right with me when these are juniors.

I agree about the last sentence. My point is not that Victoria didn't do well in her second assignment but mostly that nobody else really did that well at Next Gen. Granted some skaters were injured or not top shape, the junior women event was very disappointing.

I support your words about taking away spots from juniors but it's part of the sport really. Japan takes spots away and sometimes, just forfeits them.... so that's even more punitive. That's not what I am suggesting at all.

I think that athletes who are 16-17 understand very well that results will lead to events. I was a young competitive swimmer a million years ago and I knew that I had to earn my standards or else, I was done competing for the season. It's cruel when you miss it by 0.02 seconds which happened to me at one point on the 100 fly. I wasn't even elite compared to the JGP athletes. So, if they do not learn now that anything can be given and taken away, they will not cope well either in seniors. I know Skate Canada has often be very protective of the young talent, but does that always work out ?

For instance, David Howes. He's been really supported by the Fed but seems to be regressing season after season. Yes, this is harsh talk. I am sorry that I am even writing this, and I am not an insider and there could be tons of mitigating factors I am unaware of. I also write this with the utmost respect for his talent. It's been a bit frustrating to be a fan of his because he is so good yet the jumps do not work consistently.

I don't know really. Skate Canada has forfeited senior host spots at SCI before, sending a clear message to our women that they were just not that great. My point here is that not giving or giving always has two sides of a medal. Not giving the second spot to Victoria is encouraging Resse but not supporting Victoria, for instance (and hypothetically). Not giving a spot to Eddy is really not sitting well with me and it has nothing to do with anybody else but Eddy. I heard what he and Yvan were discussing in the KnC. Eddy was upset. Yvan was telling him, ( I am paraphrasing) that he just needed to keep working and he would learn how to compete better... but since then, no competition for him.
Sure, he will go to SGÉ next week. But the playing field there will not be anything close to what the others have gotten, skating with the likes of Rio Nakate or Minkyu Seo.

I think it's normal fans are questioning themselves and are being vocal about these things.

Would Audréanne Foster have continued skating if she had received a few more spots ?

I just don't want Eddy or anyone else to lose their motivation because they do not get spots. So, I apologize if asking for spots for a skater means ipso facto that I'd agree on removing spots from another but that's the dilemma isn't it ?

They do learn that anything can be given and taken away when they don't receive assignments after not performing up to the standards that are required. It isn't based on the short-term results, but over the course of a season. Skaters aren't included on the National Team if they don't meet the requirements that Skate Canada has, or they don't receive further assignments if they don't meet the scores that are required. The Juniors are learning that this season when they aren't receiving assignments, or even being included on the substitute list.

With Howes, he had an ankle injury that hampered him this season. What we see as regression can actually be recovery from an injury. That meant no assignment this season, and he only did Cranberry Cup last season since he didn't meet the level required for a JGP then.

With Eddy, maybe getting out of Quebec for more competitions would be better. There's a reason Skate BC started organizing trips to USFS domestic competitions, where they're against a different variety of comptetitors. Maybe Patinage Quebec should look at what they can do to support opportunities for their skaters if they aren't getting enough competitive experience. I don't even know who is getting a Junior B at this point either, so he could still get that. It's still international experience.

I don't want anyone to lose their motivation if they have one bad skate that isn't their usual level and then their spot gets taken away based on one short-term result. If it's a blip in the season, it shouldn't affect them. If it keeps happening over the season, then it will affect them and they won't get assignments the next season or championship assignments after Nationals.

Sometimes the talk feels like kicking a skater while they're down. Or before they even had a chance to go on the JGP. Fans can see the short-term, but it's Skate Canada's job to keep perspective and look at what's going on that fans don't see.

Of course, we are just merely observing, at least for those of us who are not insiders.
And well, since we are passionate about the sport and its athletes, some of us can get pretty vocal.. but that's the whole point of a forum.

I would never read things about me, doing what I do... it does exist. Why? I just don't like it. Some people are different and they want to read it all. So I hope that skaters who are sensitive about whatever comment could be on the internet about them are coached well enough to not get invested in such comments.

So in that sense, I am still going to question, from time to time, the reasoning behind spots given or not ;)

Matthew Newnham
John Kim

Women
Madeline Schizas

Ice Dance

I thought Uliana would be here since she wasn't on the entries for BC Autumn Leaves. Hopefully she'll be at a different Challenger. Good to see Matthew getting a Challenger finally.
Wow!!
I really thought Uliana would be here. Maybe, she wants to try a different Challenger event 😜

I’m so happy to see both John Kim and Matthew at this event despite not achieving domestic benchmark scores. They were close and this is a good opportunity for them to get a good score and international recognition.

Maddie 😫 (I’m tired of her and her programs). Is this her fourth or fifth event of the season? And she still has her two GP events. She has been scoring in the 170s this season. We have plenty of skaters capable of skating these scores, but, they at most, just get one international event

It's her 2nd international event. Same number of Challenger events as Roman and Stephen have been assigned to.

For the women? It seemed like a well skated event with 15 skaters scoring over 50 which is great for a jgp. Not low scoring at all.
It was low-scoring for what the girls delivered and how they were scored at other events.

There were a lot of low levels (especially on step sequences) that would have been called higher at other events, and scoring was not generous here. It wasn't the strictest scored event ever, and it was fair within the context of the event (for the most part), but it was still scored differently than for example JGP Ankara (at least in the SP).

I edited the table myself... so I hope I didn't make mistakes because it's not up to date on wiki.

To note : Canada has medals in 3 disciplines. (men, dance, pairs) but most of the medals are from pairs and dance.
Korea and Japan have medals only in singles.

Japan will be hard to beat. However, I’m beginning to have confidence we will finish at #2 when all is said and done. Go Canada

They updated the assignments on the Skate Canada page and Vasii does have Gdansk now. I hope he does show his potential and takes advantage of the opportunity.

I hope that David shows that Varese was a fluke and can earn a Challenger later in the season. That was a hard skate to watch after how much growth he's shown. I wanted him to get his chance at redemption and it's a shame he won't.

He may get a junior B event.

I doubt it, they haven't given Junior Bs to skaters who had a JGP assignment last season (Cranberry Cup doesn't count for an assignment.) He's moving up to Senior at Skate Ontario October, I think he's done with Juniors unless he gets Junior Worlds.
