2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

On a positive note, Maddie did earn a bronze medal. Her free skate met my expectations as i thought she’d land 3/4 triples and score around 110. She usually scores 60+ SP and around 110 for her FP to score in the 170 range.

I’m waiting for one of SMD, Kaiya and Uliana to step it up to score over 180.

I really like Madeline's program... but she only landed 3 triples in it. Popped her way through. I am not sure what it is but her total score is way below what Sara-Maude and Kaiya have achieved last week. I think she may be feeling the pressure of the "one spot".
I said in the Summer that the Olympic spot was Madeline's to lose. At the moment, she is at risk of doing so.

It's strange ... I find that Maddie skate stronger when she is in a competition with big name like Kaori Sakamoto, etc. in those competition she has strong score in SP. And, when she is skating to a competition like Denis Ten memorial who have not a lot of big names and no other canadian skater, she tend to skate less stronger ... Why ??? I'm pretty sure that when she will be in Skate Canada, she will skate strong just because it will be a big event and she usually skate strong when it count to keep her canadian number 1 statut. But, it kind of strange, that she is a up and down skater. She can be a top 10 skaters sometimes and in other competition she could be a skater who doesn't qualify for the FS.

A great competitor does great all the time... Not just when it matters. Why waste so much time and money to go all the way to Kaz if you cannot bring it....

Jazzy and Kiki took silver in Gdansk adding to the medal tally.

The final outcome is that the top three Canadian pairs have all qualified for the JGPF.

Ava and Yoni (1st qualifier)
Jazzy and Kiki (4th qualifier)
Julia and Étienne (5th qualifier)

Mission accomplished for our pairs.

Layla and Alexander are looking for qualification too. They stand in 2nd after the RD.
This thrills me so much!!
We have three pairs teams into the JGP finals!!!

Ava and Yoni will have to worry about the two Chinese pairs teams as they are improving fast. My favourite pair team

Jazzy and Kiki - Did you see Jazzy’s 2A 1A 2A? It was better than Kiki’s
Julia and Etienne are closing the gap between themselves and Jazzy and Kiki

Jazzy improved a lot on the double axel... Apparently, the throws are going well in practice too.

Julia and Étienne are maxed out now though. They will need to start adding triples if they want to catch up.. the trick will be to see if when they do add the triples, if they can land them. Right now, they are in JGPF because of their stability with elements and their great skating basics. Hopefully, adding triples will be smooth. The triple twist can be quite the learning curve and if I am not worried for Étienne's triple jumps as he did what is needed in singles juniors I have no idea what Julia can do...

Julia and Etienne have one triple:
3S (throw)
Hopefully, they can learn another triple throw and the triple twist.

Julia is like Jazzy. She has all her doubles including the 2A. But, she struggles with adding more than a 1A or 2T to her combos. Jazzy has that extra 2A added to her combos. It will be tough for Julia/Etienne to add more points.

the 3s throw was a miss today.

I think Jazzy is more powerful in her jumps than Julia whose doubles are small even. So yeah. I am not sure if Julia will be able to learn triples as fast as it's needed.

They did land the 3S at their first JGP event though …. I was shocked about that 😳

Yup. Julia’s jumps are tiny. I don’t see her learning a triple jump anytime soon. She is already 19.

the reality is that though our teams are great in juniors, if they don't learn their triple jumps, they will be left behind in senior. I feel especially badly about Jazzy and Kiki whose pair elements are stellar. I really hope Bruno enlists Meagan to work on both Jazzy and Kiki's triple salchow... even with just one triple and the 2a-1a-2a... it would be okay.

I don't think Kiki has ever landed a triple jump either.

Nope. Jazzy and Kiki both seem to struggle with the triples. But, hard to tell with Kiki as we don’t know if he is restraining himself due to Jazzy or if he also doesn’t truly have these jumps.

Ava and Yohnathan both have 3T and 3S. Although Ava seems to struggle with the 3T more. I just need them to learn a 1A 2A combo instead of the safe 1A 1A combo.

Natasha McKay (GBR ladies, now retired) did her first triple at 19 (or possibly 18). Yes, she was never a top skater outside the UK, but she did compete at Euros and Worlds a number of times and made it to the last Olympics.

Robert Brodie interviews Fabbri/Ayer:
“But like Paul said, I think it really showed us that we can be in the top 20 and we secured the third place for Canada at the Olympics, which was obviously the place that were aiming, so it was nice to do that for ourselves in a way. It was our goal to go to Worlds because we had never done a senior championship, and it was good to do it before Olympics. But yeah, it’s super motivating seeing how close we can be and it was our first Worlds and we made it into the top 20, which is a big deal.”

I just watched Matthew Newnham’s skates from Denis Ten. Wow. What an improvement from last year! I only noticed one pop (triple to double axel) but such great expression and movement. He really stands out when he skates confidently like this. Congratulations. Our boys are really improving.

Didn’t see John Kim’s free but from the protocols, not so good. I still have faith that one day it will come together.

Grayson’s scores from Riga indicate he could place second next week. Wishing him the best for a great skate

Korea has pulled way ahead of Canada with two golds this weekend.
In total of medals though, Canada tied Japan. There are no pairs next weekend and Canada is sending a development dance team. So it's either going to stay like this or Grayson will add up to the tally once more.

We, the North !
