2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

After seeing Deanna and Max in all practices and in competition in Angers, I can say they look good and confident. I don't hate the backflip anymore, it looks less like a program-stopping moment now. I saw it six times and it definitely looks like they know what they're doing.
The short program was really good and they looked very pleased with it. The free on the other hand...that first mistake really threw them off and you could see that during the rest of the program. I got to meet Deanna before the gala yesterday and she told me the first thing she did after she came down from that "not-twist" was saying OH MY GOD to Max. And that it made them really tense. I think it was really visible in their jump sequence. But she hopes that after that missed jump at John Nicks and now this, they have eliminated all the weird mistakes, and that SCI will be better.
I really love both of their programs and can't wait to see them evolve. And I hope Deanna keeps that hairstyle for the free, love the curls 😁

So glad you got to meet Deanna! Is that the first time you met her? I'm rooting so hard for them this Olympic season. If the Olympic Pairs podium has them, Hase / Volodin, and Miura / Kihara on it, that would be great!

I would be "scared" if I had a job with Skate Canada about why they aren't getting strong enough skaters and relying on the old guard in many ways. Roman/Keegan and Stephen are not fresh; Maddie is in her second quadrennial and not improving and who knows while we see glimmer from SMD and Spence, Ruiter still seems junior the greatest "new" hope may be old Gabby Daleman. In pairs it has been stagnant and relying on a very mature pairs team that seems to be going downhill. ANd in pairs well the top team may be getting old and stale but there is hope in the next two teams which have huge potential. But it has been two quadrenials and even then Canada was relying on its mature skaters in 2018.. In a lot of sports the leaders would be looking at pink slips You have to produce; you can't always blame the athletes.
In 2018 those mature skaters as you call them is why Canada won the team competition at the Olympics.

Yes, it was the first time. She's such a lovely person and really easy to talk to and meeting her made my year I think 😂 and she gives great hugs 😁 I had hoped to meet her here but things like that are never guaranteed so I'm extra grateful. That would be my dream podium as well. It's so close though, anything can happen. Can't wait for Milan, I will be there to cheer for them in person.

I want a hug too but from Max :) So happy you got to meet her. Nice new avatar

Does anyone know what International assignment Keegan has? The lady I talked to at Texas Trophy wasn't sure.

I wonder when Skate Canada will reveal the CS Warsaw Cup assignments. Curious who they're sending.

With Warsaw Cup, any assignments to it will mean a bye to Nationals so that's likely something they'll take into consideration. Senior Women free at Challenge is currently scheduled for 6 hours, so I'm not expecting anyone without a bye to Nationals for it.

Women - my guess is a combination of Shiryaeva/Dupuis/Medland Spence. Uliana should be getting a Challenger based on her getting the host spot for SCI, while Sara-Maude and Katherine are due for second Challengers. They all have byes to Nationals, so no need to compete at Challenge. Lulu Lin had a solid performance at Skate Ontario October, so I could see her at the Junior portion. Edit: There is no Junior event at Warsaw Cup, the non-Challenger part of it is for Pairs.

Men - I'm hoping for Paradis and Bondar. Anthony has met the minimum scores, even if he doesn't have the 3A yet (and has a bye.) David showed at Skate Ontario October that his free at Varese was a fluke, even if the Senior layout of his short didn't work out on the first try. I'd like to see Vasii there too.

Dance - no idea, Lauriault/Le Gac said after their free at GPdF at they'll compete at Challenge. That's a good idea if they're getting a new RD and want feedback before Nationals from Canadian judges.

Pairs - based on timing, Laurin/Ethier should go to Zagreb since Warsaw would be a week after Skate America. They're due for a Challenger, Zagreb would probably work better. I have no idea what is going on with Bombardier/Mimar, I'm not expecting them here.

Of the Pairs who don't have byes, Yunoki/Taylor only competed their free at Sask Skate. Secunda/Ferland and Graves/Pierro are debuting after entries are due. I'd like Yunoki/Taylor to get an assignment, but to Zagreb since their free is not YouTube friendly and that's where Warsaw Cup streamed last season.

They are getting a new RD? Why? I thought the Prince program was great.
From here, it's music rights:

“We got the message two weeks before Lake Placid (a summer competition in July where they earned a silver medal) that it would not work for Prince at the Games. Not surely, but there is a high probability (it won’t).”

It’ll mean switching to a new rhythm dance sometime later in the fall, but Lauriault and Le Gac are trying to see the bright side of that.

“We will be kind of sad to let (Prince) go, but at the same time, we need to take it as a refresher,” said Lauriault. “Sometimes the year can be long, especially if we have good goals for this year. We want the year to be as long as it can and having that new short dance maybe in the middle of the year gives it something new.

“So we’re going to try to take it like this. We have a couple of Plan Bs that we have to check with Skate Canada, but we’re getting there.”

Deanna and Max will do Art on Ice in Switzerland after the Olympics. Excellent news for me as Zurich is only an hour away 😁

I guess they'll stay in Europe after they're done in Milan. And I also guess this means we might not see them at Worlds this season. Art on Ice ends March 7th, and Worlds start around the 20th, give or take a few days. I don't think they'll want to travel back and forth.
