Men SP

I'm really enjoying hearing that so many enjoyed Johnny's program -- sounds like he can still put that "touch" into his skating. Can't wait to see it, somehow sometime! Hope Johnny has another great skate tomorrow. :agree:

Can't wait to see Carriere, too. Oda, well, I haven't "gotten" him yet but I'm sure I will if he continues to impress.

Reporting in also from the land of the head and chest colds :disagree:. Started getting sick on Tues, my birthday of all days, and thought I'd be better by now. Sigh.

I loved Oda!! He was just gliding, I almost had the feeling that he grabbed my hand and that I am spinning with him to this fantastic Waltz music! Wow, and his jumps looked sooooooo easy! Effortless. Lovely, energetic steps. Actually, I like him more than Takahashi.

I loved his program as well! WORLD of difference from his showings at Nebelhorn and KSM. The jumps were like honey! Lovely steps, especially the straight line sequence with a huge leap jump! it's nice to see step sequences that actually cover the ice with nice speed and still get good levels.
I just wish he'd get rid of the gloves and the high collar - at times he looks a big "lost" in his own costume. The overdressing aside, it was a very good program.

Here is his SP performance with Russian commentary:

I'm so happy for Nobu! His basic skating skills are amazing (although I'm not a fan of his program). I hope he can WIN!

The whole competition is kinda BLAH, most programs are bland and empty, among the top 3, Yannik's program was the only one that excited me. He deserves better PCS mark IMO.

Nobunari Oda has the most amazing skating knees in the world. The way he can bend them and uses them to absorb his movements is unparalleled. His jump landings are the best in the world - such soft knees and effortlessness! His jumps were amazing. And his speed... I haven't seen a man this year whose speed can match his.

Great comeback!

Wow !
Nobu was great, but I was caught by Mura. Nevermind the overused music and strange costume to it. That 3axel !!!

I'm seeing myself becoming a japanese/canadian men fan !!! Those guys are *great* !!!

wouldn't it be smarter if johnny replace his flip with a loop since he is either getting a e or two footing it sometimes.

I sincerely doubt that - the Loop is and always was his weakest Triple. I don't think he would risk that in the short program. He has three choices: put in the Quad , keep the Flip and accept the edge calls or substitute it with the Salchow (only 4.5 points base value but should give him between 5.5. and 6 points because he does it really well).

Yannick Ponsero has my favorite SP of all the men this season. I love it! If not for that hand down on the quad I'd have put him in at least second. Hope he holds it together in the LP.

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...disregarding the two-footed landings I thought the performance was better (more lively) than at SA. I just wish it was a more interesting program. A great majority of the footwork is rehashed from last years'. I find myself almost missing the Johnny with great programs but terrible training habits. He can do better programs than this. I hope the cold doesn't affect him too much in the LP- that cough at the end of the SP looked nasty.

Oda- He's a great skater, I can see that quite clearly and he deserves all the praise he's been getting. Definite talent there. It's obvious to me even though I simply cannot get into that program. I don't know what it is but I've watched it twice and just cannot get into it.

Reynolds- Shallow comments first. He needs a haircut (I like to see my skaters' faces) and a new costume; the fringes on his sleeves are totally distracting [in the footwork especially]. His jumps seemed a bit low I thought, especially on the 3A. Overall I do think he's looking better than last season, but there's still room for more development.

Where has Takahito Mura been hiding all this while? He's a wonderful skater. It looks like the Men's field in Japan is almost as deep as the ladies.

Well, we'll agree to disagree. Lambiel had the softest knees before surgery killed them. But I do agree nowadays Nobunari seems to claim that victory.

I loved Nobu's program.

Despite his Morozovian arms, his upper body movements were great.

His lutz and flip looked too similar to each other..... Didn't he get an edge call?

But I love his huge 3A, quality spins, nice steps, and overall skating skills. He is such a great talent!

I agree that Lambiel had soft knees but I also found like his knee bend was almost used to save his jumps whereas Nobu's seems so much more natural and easy. I found Lambiel's less secure, though still soft.:)

It looks like my prediction is right on for this portion of competition:biggrin:
Keep it up, boys!

At least for this portion of the competition, the spirit of Oda's ancestor was successful in blocking PJ Kwong's mark of doom. ;) If only the other male skaters she selected were fortunate enough to have an elder watch over them...

Just wanted to comment that people who went to the NHK arena were saying that Johnny received more presents and flowers than any skaters including Japanese ones. That's quite impressive! How popular he is!
