2025 GP Finlandia Trophy: General Info and Pregame Chat

Anyone getting a bad gateway error 500 trying to reach GS forums.? Its intermittant.
I find hotel pricing "interesting" . And sad. They use IMHO some sort of computer algorithum to calculate room price for any night. Case in point. My room in San Diego for Thursday was 90 USD. Friday (the night before my cruise) was 280 USD. This is their choice and right.
But When the Reno National air races moved to Roswell NM, everyone made reservations in the few hotels they have. Two months later, the reservations were all canceled and new ones had to be made at 3 times the normal rate. Hope everyone found good rooms at good prices in Finland.!
There was an issue with Cloudfair (?) gateway software that I later found out cause some temporary problems with multiple websites. Some sort of programming mistake in an update.

Ugh, such a shame Samodelkina didn’t make it. :( Honestly, established athletes should just be getting multi-entry visas to start with - most sports have event calendars that take them all over the world each year and usually they return to the same places where he next year or within a few years.

I’m wondering if it isn’t because figure skating is not such a big and/or commercial sport, so the federation does not have the same access as some other sports. For example, in tennis, athletes have way many more events that cover many more countries - but I hardly remember visa issues ever being a prominent topic of conversation like it is i. skating. And I certainly don’t remember major ones, like one of the medal contenders not being able to show up to an event.
Samodelkina was planning to skate in Tallinn or Zagreb in the coming weeks, and everyone knew there Petrokina was a good chance of withdrawing, so it is very odd. Maybe they didn't want three big tournaments and all that travel over the span of several weeks, instead focus on 4CC, Olympics, World's.

I am not there this year, but I attended Finlandia last year, so here is my experience:
- the security guys weren't all fluent in English, but the bag checks were minimal, especially later on in the day
- I think it's still the official policy not to bring in food & drink (this year's visitors would know for sure), but last year I had no issues bringing in bottled mineral water (0.5-0.75 l, so I didn't try to bring the large ones), store-bought sandwiches, and snacks. That was very fortunate indeed, because I found the food at the venue overpriced (as it is everywhere I have been so far) and too fastfood-y for my liking: french fries, nachos, donuts, that kind of stuff. I think I only bought some cinnamon rolls & tea there last year. There were long lines because there were only about 4-5 food stalls open IIRC.
- It seems you're even allowed to eat while sitting in your seat as I saw some people last year doing just that.
- if you're into gifts for skaters, last year there was a self-service stand with roses operating via a QR code. I opted to buy some in the nearest mall, though.
- I can recommend a restaurant someone had recommended to me last year - a Nepalese place called Mountain, within walking distance from the venue. Very nice prices, huge servings (at least for a small eater like me). If it still exists, I recommend checking it out for a hearty dinner.
- there's a cafe right at the venue (outside, on the left side and up the little slope when facing the main entrance). I've never been there, but the location is convenient, perhaps one could grab a quick lunch inside.

Enjoy the competition!

They do not allow liquids or own food but last season my bag was not checked I think small snacks are ok. I was there early but while walking around I noticed when rest of the entrance doors were opened, they made more checks.

Finland is an expensive country and arena prices are higher than outside.

I gave feedback because all food last year served or I found was junk food. I hope there will more options now. It is some company which serves the food at Helsinki ice hall. They probably had similar food ad the ice hockey fans buy. I hope they are told now that figure skating viewers want healthier food. They are small kiosks around the rink where the junk food is sold.

(BTW, don't feel bad my friend...I met a Physics whiz working on National defense systems on my cruise ship and HE couldnt explain the therory of relativity to me either. I still see that space ship passing the earth at 2/3 C turning on his headlights and I have no idea how his headlights can move at C in both frames of reference.

*Ahem* ... Neither did anyone else when this mind-boggling fact was discovered by actual measurement in 1887. The world of physics was turned upside down with two decades of panicky scientific activity and bizarre speculation. Finally in 1905 Einstein (then a clerk at the Swiss patent office) figured it out.

All you have to do is realize that there is no such thing as space and no such thing as time, and everything falls into place.

I m waiting for @saine to come up with the rulebook to clarify this once and for all.. until next year :)

the point though to be made : if none of us know the rules for sure... then, the rules are unclear, ever-changing, etc

it's not our fault if our memory can take only so much. The ISU should have clear and consistent rules :)
My memory Can take precious little.

This is a big compliment for me, please say thank you from me!!! I definitely tried to match/reflect FS/FD costumes also this time, sometimes it's just the limitations of crepe paper colors, sometimes it's the fact that skater had more than one costume & I won't know which one will be in Finland (like Maddie Schizas, so I made a pink/green hybrid :))
I love your crowns. ❤️❤️

To add to what @pesto has already written - they were due to skate at the Bolero Cup in September, but withdrew due to injury. They won silver in the Metropole Cup in Nice recently - here's their free skate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8RXp1YonNk

They are a very charismatic pair, both skate beautifully, and are coached by (previous British European medallists) Penny Coombes and Nick Buckland.

I think they are ones to watch, especially for the next quad. They've already made a lot of progress in seniors.
How do Penny and Nick coach them when they train at Iceworks? Or they did - did they move?

I will love James forever for marking through the calories of every ítem of food that came into the house with a sharpie when he was dating my Queen.

I can't copy and paste from my phone. Page 4, paragraph f has the requirements for host spots. They don't have to be in the SB 75 or meet the Grand Prix score requirements. But it's strongly suggested that they meet the score requirements.

The scores are on the same page, under 2.3.
I didn't interpret it quite that way. It says
The domestic Skaters/Couples should fulfil the criteria of being on the top 75 Grand PrixSeason’s Best list when first selected.

and
It is not mandatory for the Organizing ISU Member’s Skaters/Coupleto fulfil the criteria of the minimum Grand Prix score but it is strongly suggested.
The wording on the minimum scores is clear, but I'm not sure about "should" for the top 75. I understand what "must" means, and I understand what "not mandatory, but strongly suggested" means, but "should" is not very clear. I'm assuming it is somewhere between the two. Perhaps it means "to be set in secret by the ISU, depending on the phase of the moon, how they feel about the host, and other unnamed and unspeakable criteria".

Looks it is nice weather to walk to arena anyway (estimated time 25-30 minutes by my speed). Mihhail has got a new blade attached - yes, I spy some skaters' ig accounts- so let's hope it is good day for everyone.

Isu interviewed Amber asking of she likes Mark - she does - and Mark showed up quickly on that video. So he is here, too. If Isu channel appears I suppose he is the commentator.

At this point, my Friday is ruined by my Thursday night... so I have no idea how much I will be able to live stream...

Long story short, my condo building has magnetic door locks and mine just decided to die. I was coming home from work... 10h30PM... and couldn't get inside my place until 1h30AM.... At least, I am home and safe and now, finally fed... but tomorrow will be hectic with the door needing to be repaired and other things like medical exams and more work...

So take care of my Canadian skaters :). Rare thing to have so many of them competing in a GP that is not Skate Canada.
