2025 GP Finlandia Trophy: General Info and Pregame Chat

I agree it doesn’t work like that, hence B/M are removed.

It should be the same for Samodelkina.
I understand your point. At the same time, I do want to see skaters not feeling like they must accept an assignment when they aren't ready to compete. They may see it as their only chance and feel like they must take it.

I don’t disagree, but then add someone who has to WD due to injury to the replacement list.

So if not Sofia and we skip the ones who already have two or have maximum country spots already next in line is Katherine Medland Spence? I look the list somebody has put on another site, did not find any else.

I posted this to GP general thread, but I copy it here:

Here is an article about T/V's WD in Finnish. Summary: He has recovered, but his ankle muscle strength is not yet enough for a competition. They train already on ice and will start their season in Nationals, in the middle of December.

I know about nothing about Phebe and James, but stalked and they are very excited to get the spot.

Interesting that ID spot was filled so soon, but no clue about women's spot. Is it ISU members cannot decide what rules say about when somebody does not WD but refuses to take the offered spot because of injury? Has this happened ever before? I would love to have Sofia, but rules should be same to everyone, so it maybe complicated situation if rules does not say anything about this.

They were good juniors, made the JGPF in the 22-23 season, and have benefitted from Lilah and Lewis placing very highly, and earning GB a second spot.

It's their senior Grand Prix debut this weekend in SkAm. Then Finlandia... then I think it's nationals the following weekend (stupid timing). I haven't seen them yet this year. Last year they got through to the free in both Europeans and Worlds.

To add to what @pesto has already written - they were due to skate at the Bolero Cup in September, but withdrew due to injury. They won silver in the Metropole Cup in Nice recently - here's their free skate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8RXp1YonNk

They are a very charismatic pair, both skate beautifully, and are coached by (previous British European medallists) Penny Coombes and Nick Buckland.

I think they are ones to watch, especially for the next quad. They've already made a lot of progress in seniors.

Could it be some other issue for Samodelkina? E.g. finances, injury setback or maybe waiting to find out if a visa can be sorted out in time?

She has got now official invitation, was told in GP General thread and I stalked, her team in X confirms it. I saw this quota also in another site. She is now waiting for Visa. My guess is this took so long as ISU had to find out what rules say if skater does not WD put does not take offered spot. If there is nothing, as I think it is very rare situation, so they had to offer the spot to her. Personally it is ok for me she got the spot and I would like to see her live. Maybe rules in this situation should be updated, just because all skater will be threatened equal.

I couldn't find any single major event that would explain the high hotel prices in the days before the Finlandia Trophy. However, there are very many concerts in Helsinki during the week, as well as two popular musicals and a premiere at the National Theatre. Surely the concert of Kraftwerk on November 20th at Finlandia Hall is reflected in hotel bookings in the city center but Finlandia Hall is not a large arena with about 1700 seats.

The previous week, the European Public Health Conference will be held in Helsinki, and on Saturday the 14th, the Finnish national football team will have a World Cup qualifying match against Malta at the Olympic Stadium. These events will certainly be reflected in hotel bookings.

If I notice some other events later, I'll let you know. I hope you end up coming to Helsinki! I agree the line up here will be amazing.
Anyone getting a bad gateway error 500 trying to reach GS forums.? Its intermittant.
I find hotel pricing "interesting" . And sad. They use IMHO some sort of computer algorithum to calculate room price for any night. Case in point. My room in San Diego for Thursday was 90 USD. Friday (the night before my cruise) was 280 USD. This is their choice and right.
But When the Reno National air races moved to Roswell NM, everyone made reservations in the few hotels they have. Two months later, the reservations were all canceled and new ones had to be made at 3 times the normal rate. Hope everyone found good rooms at good prices in Finland.!

The logo for this event, showing ice tracings, is cool!
What? You don't see a bottle nose dolphin sitting on a toilet seat? LOL! Don't worry about ME! I flunked the Rorschach test!
(BTW, don't feel bad my friend...I met a Physics whiz working on National defense systems on my cruise ship and HE couldnt explain the therory of relativity to me either. I still see that space ship passing the earth at 2/3 C turning on his headlights and I have no idea how his headlights can move at C in both frames of reference. I think I will stick to enjoying skating.
