I wonder if they're going to address Gaby's memoirs to be published in January and the questionable circumstances in which the "wild-card" team was formed at all. Oh, and the concerns about doubtful judging surrounding ice-dance (and figure skating in general) for years...

I have to say the trailer edit makes it very clear to me that the main 3 teams are the married American long-time sweethearts, the quirky campy Canadian underdogs, and the obviously evil French team here to crash the show



While I enjoy Adam Rippon being there to... I assume assist in overall narration (???? but I heard Michelle Ellis of the Runthrough ice dance lore is involved in this production), I snorted when Tara Lipinski was also there.

Adam has such a nice cadence for narration / podcasting / commentary. Clear and crisp, a bit sassy but just the right amount of patience to make it compelling for me.

The entire thing was surely filmed, edited and completed before the book was out. The only thing they could do is add a text paragraph at the end, but the book is not entirely nor primarily about Cizeron.

It seems designed to hype the Olympics ice dance event, and appears to be heavily Chock/Bates and North American-centric in focus, albeit that FB/C rep France and train in Montreal. I spied Lewis Gibson in the background of one shot, otherwise no mention at all in this trailer of other top contending teams such as Fear/Gibson and Guignard/ Fabbri.

With Michelle Ellis, AdaRipp, and Tara involved, this looks like an NBC Olympics-sponsored project. The overdone hype build-up is quite unnecessary. There's clearly enough drama in ice dance and figure skating without having to over-manufacture and curate it purely for Olympics ice dance build-up.

On her IG, while paired with her former partner, Isabella Flores already singlehandedly generated enormous interest in ice dance (circa 2022 - 2024), bringing many new fans to the sport. In addition, Layne Fargo's book, The Favorites, has garnered a lot of buzz and interest in ice dance. Fargo has mentioned Hubbell/ Donahue as the inspirational team that sparked her to write the book.

I think the ice dance documentary series on the Olympic Channel four years ago was good in how it followed a group of IAM athletes over the course of a season. I also feel it might be more interesting if an in-depth documentary series on ice dance was created, not tied to Olympics p.r., that followed the fascinating stories of up-and-coming teams like Cui/ Rogers and Neset/ Markelov. And also featured burgeoning young international teams. Or, also something along the lines of examining the historic development of ice dance; the various regional and coaching styles that culminated in the formation of IAM; the rules changes enacted to popularize the discipline and how that has brought ice dance to its current transitional crisis.

The surface banality of this current series appears to only be about the overhyped public personalities of three top teams that were initially anticipated to be the ones in the running for the Olympics podium. Meanwhile, the landscape always changes in sport.

Yes, I think it's important to read Gabby's book when it is widely released in other languages. I have heard that Gabby denies certain sm narratives suggesting lack of support when she became pregnant. Apparently, she indicates in the book that she tried to stop those narratives because it is not true that her coaches and partner were not supportive during her personal crisis. Seems like such false narratives being gossiped about might have become an added source of tension, conflict, and ultimately alienation. Very sad.

As you say, it seems unnecessary but I think the show is aimed at casual fans and potential fans, not hardcore fans who already know the stories. Hope it does a good job at catching up the wider audience and introducing them to some of the top characters in ice dance. I also would have liked it if they included Lilah & Lewis and Charlene & Marco, but they have limited time and may have wanted to keep the audience from being overwhelmed.

If the review above is a complete presentation, Netflix seems to be hitting a new low in docs with this. Giving the floor to just one side and choosing the side of the alleged SA abuser to present them as a victim while staying short of speaking for the real victim of SA is below any standard I can think of. If true, it makes it an obvious just PR stunt. Good to know in advance.
The question is who really paid for it.

I watched it and think the ones that got away best were Piper and Paul. Madison and Evan...I feel like I don't know more about them after watching this than I did before.
The ones that came across very unlikeable were FBC. Laurence playing the victim and defending NS...that was hard to watch. And not because I feel sorry for her in any way.

If I didn't like Piper and Paul before, I sure like them now (and I liked them already). They're also the ones seemingly to have the most joy in skating for itself, and not only for getting results or having a career in it. They also look to be such good friends and partners. Carol Lane and her team also seem fun to be with - as coaches but also as people. I thought it funny (maybe I've got a bad sense of humour) that we saw Maddy and Evan both falling often in practice because of the skirt, but that it was Laurence who tripped on her skirt in the GPF. I didn't think it was funny then, but in this context it was. Watching Piper and Paul going backstage after their skate (and the one of the Brits), was heartbreaking. Still, that little piece showed us just how authentic, nice and supportive of each other they are.

- What the hell is Carol wearing?! And why?
- In first five minute Bock claimed that their biggest advantage is their chemistry. What??? This doc made them even more boring.
- I respect Adam for explaining the sinister athmosphere behind fbc comeback and saying loudly he's rooting more for other teams, if not his inclusions the show would not bother to give any other perspective than Laurence being a victim.
- Piper and Paul are the most inspiring, fun and lovely people, it's really easy to like them. Paul is my fav person, the lowkey guy with natural charms, I love the way he expresses himself.
- All those "frendships" at IAM seem so fake.

I enjoyed watching and watched all 3 episodes at once. Loved going behind the scenes and seeing some info about costumes, training, and choreography. I would have liked seeing a few of the other top 5 couples too.
