2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Yes Maddie earned her spot at Nationals, but for me she throw it away. Time to look elsewhere. It seems to be a Canadian thing.... to just make it to the Olympics but not to give it your all once there. I have been a supporter of Maddie for years but this result is just not sitting well with me. She had her chance and has come up very very short. Send someone, anyone else to worlds. After all didn't SC step in and help her gets the rights to skate the short she wanted.... yet she still under performs with that short. Not acceptable. I am no longer a Maddie supporter. She did us wrong. She has set Can ladies program back years. No lady skating in the free. When was the last time that happened. Please do not let her go to worlds to push us back further.

I guess part of what is getting to me is that a lot of posters are down on Jennifer Robinson, yet she made it to the top ten after her Olympic short and ended up 7th over all. And now our CAN champ can not even make it into the free skate. Does not set well for me.
So please cut her loose and move on.

Setting the Canadian women's program back years? That is really over the top to say about someone who talked about living out a nightmare to reporters. She didn't do the country wrong and isn't pushing the country back further if she goes to Worlds. She had a bad skate on the biggest stage in the world, and is the reason that there was an opportunity for that spot in the first place.

I hope she stays offline and doesn't see talk like that.

Sorry but when was the last time a Can lady did not make a free skate at a big event.
2018 - Larkyn Austman did not qualify for the free at the Olympics and Worlds.
2019 - Aurora Cotop did not qualify for the free at Worlds
2020 - Kaiya Ruiter did not qualify for the free at Junior Worlds
2025 - Kara Yun did not qualify for the free at Junior Worlds

I don't see it as something worth getting angry about. Five women weren't making the free and it happened to be Maddie at this Olympics. It's not something I see as bringing shame upon the country.

I actually give credit to Maddie for being the most consistent triple lutz-triple toe skater we have ever had. I don't think she has set the Canadian ladies back with one skate. My point of view for sending Gabby is not so much against Maddie but more for Gabby.

I would cut her some slack here for sure. If there is anyone to blame here it's Skate Canada. Not for selecting her. She was the best option, especially for the outside chance of the team event. However, Skate Canada has not invested in our women enough over the last couple Olympic cycles. This means indeed that it's been years Canadian women only have had one spot...So all the pressure has been on Maddie for too long. There is a limit on how much pressure one can deal with for that long. For some time, Maddie was the only one with tech minimums...
Also, I am still not over that one time when they couldn't send Fiona to 4CC because she didn't have minimums because she didn't have the opportunities to get them.
Also, I am still not over that one time when they didn't give a host spot to one of our women at SCI.
Also, I am still not over that one time when they could have sent a whole bunch of women to ACI but would not. (unlimited spots for hosts)
Also, I am still no over the fact that a very beautiful and talented skater like Audréanne Foster never really competed outside of Canada (one JGP if I am not mistaken). Where is she now ? Retired.

This is the real issue here. If we want to blame someone for not having a skater in the LP at the Olympics, well let's blame Skate Canada for barely sending out our athletes, leaving them with absolutely no experience. By always counting on Maddie because she has good jumps and is our steadier champion, the others are under developing the skills they need to compete... and yet, once at Nationals, they do not always do well enough....

Skaters like Fée Ann, a huge talent, finally got a 4CC outing. She had had nothing this season. It's tough to go from no series B, no challengers, even less likely GP, to compete at 4CC against skaters who actually have much more experience.

Even now with the next competition : so few skaters have been assigned. Crazy stuff.

So, let's not blame this entirely on Maddie, please. A lot of her struggles probably come from being the one Skate Canada has promoted for so long. Let's also remind ourselves that she placed 6th in the SP last year at worlds.. .and was very close to finally earn those two spots for Canada.

Where I do think Maddie needs help is that she doesn't have this competitive grit to nail it more often. It's crazy how stable her jumps look when landed but then, often, silly mistakes just ruin it all.

We are not talking here about someone like Roman who has the most inconsistent jumps. Maddie doesn't have a real issue on her jumps... she just lacks focus when competing. She had that focus in the team event. Not today.

Did anyone have Gogolev going viral on TikTok? Apparently, they're calling him "Mr. Canada" and going crazy for him over there.

Maddie's skate was unfortunate. It feels like Gogolev improved more in a season than Maddie did over the last quad. I don't know why Canada seems to be struggling to develop senior skaters when we have such promising juniors. It's like they flatline in progress when they hit seniors. I wish Maddie and Roman tried a coaching change; a new perspective could have really helped them. I wonder if either of them will continue after this season?

I have the feeling Roman is done. Maddie is still young but she has been to two olympics already... so maybe that's it for her too... We will see very soon.

Of course I'm speaking as an armchair expert here, and of course in real life things are much less complicated and probably there are many factors that I don't know about. But to me, one of Romans problems was the same as Emmanuel Sandhu's problem: he stuck with the same coach forever, even when they were clearly deficits that were never being addressed. Look at Roman this year: he skated better than he ever had in competition after competition. Without question his best year ever, but I think it came because there's only one men's spot. And it makes you think, if he had it in him the whole time, Maybe a different coach would have been able to bring it out sooner. One season of consistency was not enough. With Emmanuel it was the same thing - I bet you his fans would have taken up a collection, or in these days, started a GoFundMe to pay for him to go to another more reputable coach, because I think he was seriously a world Podium potential due to his incredible natural talent. But it never happened despite years, and years, and years of inconsistency and struggling with the same technical problems that Joanne MacLeod could never fix.

I suspect that giving a coaching change a try might be what she needs - of course, what do I know? She has a life and maybe she doesn't want to move somewhere and start all over again with a new coach. But people used to do it all the time in the 90s and 2000s. Think of Michelle kwan, Bourne and Kratz, and many others. I don't know.... of course it's easier said than done, but I feel like it's worth a try. I feel like Raphael would be a good coach for her - seems like he doesn't take crap, and sometimes Maddie comes across as having a bit of an attitude. That's probably part of what has brought her to the top of Canadian skating, but sometimes those blind spots need to be addressed...

Either way, she didn't let the country down. Luckily she already had two decent skates in the team event, and if this was worlds, I would be more worried. But it isn't.

Just watched the replay with Carol Lane. She said pretty much the same thing : too much pressure for the last complete cycle on Maddie.
Could be true but if she was so tired she could have slipped up a bit at nationals to allow Gabby the spot. She wanted to go

Ladies

I’m just catching up!!
I just finished watching the Ladies SP
I expected people to be brutal. But, people on here are so cruel towards Maddie. She had a nightmare skate. It happened to Gubanova last season and now Maddie.

To all those that think Maddie shouldn’t have been selected, Maddie was the right person. She had the best resume and she delivered at Nationals. Also, at the team event, she scored 189.97 (higher than any of our Canadian ladies) this season.

If I was her, this would make me want to do Worlds even more. To prove herself.

Ladies is our weakest category heading to both Junior and Senior Worlds. The other three categories, we have a good chance to nab at least a top ten finish in those six categories

Pairs

I was enraged when Lia & Trentt landed a beautiful 3T followed by beautiful only single 2A’s. They stopped and I screamed “where is the fight!”. Go for another jump. They cost Japan team gold and for them, a potential 6th place finish. 7th if they simply went for a 1A.

In a past interview, I remember Meagan mentioned about Deanna and Maxime (when they were just going for two jumps in the combo), to at least go for a 1A to grab the extra 1-2 points. She mentioned that not going for the extra jump is leaving points off the table and like missing an element. If the skaters are not confident, with the second 2A, to at least go for a 1A for the extra point or two. So, this is my disappointment. Lia & Trentt are both talented singles jump skaters and to just forget about an extra jump frustrated me so much. I really wish Meagan would play a bigger role in Skate Canada.

Poland event

Phew!! My Lia just made the cut. Alongside the winner Tea.
What happened to giving spots to most of the other top 6 skates from Skate Trophy like they have previously done for past two seasons? Sigh… Skate Canada back to disappointing me. 😭

I’m happy for Uxia and elated at the Junior Pairs team from Quebec to get some international experience. Also, happy for the dance team and Junior Boys selected. Seems like Skate Canada is now back to being frugal though. Which scares me for the next Olympic quad.

Finally, @4everchan in regards to Roman, a little birdie told me he is 50/50 on whether or not to continue for another season. A lot is dependent on whether or not GoGo secured two spots for Worlds next season. Roman would like to end his career at a Worlds competition. But, he is also eager to move on to the next stage of his life.

Doesn't next season also have a World Team Trophy? They'll need 2 men for that, and it usually has pretty good prize money for all the participants. It would be great to see Canada with 2 men's spots again. I hope he can pull it off.

she did slip during the SP. She definitely wanted to go. She also was fierce in the SP of the team event and recovered and fought in the LP of team event. yesterday, I didn't see that fight.

Roman did leave Wainman at some point and trained at TCC but wasn't happy and came back to her.

I think there is a mix of frustration and disappointment. I think that Maddie is in a similar situation to Roman. She's been the front runner and represented Canada for many years now. She has delivered sometimes beautifully, sometimes not. People are probably just saying : other women could get their chance too. If she wants to go to worlds, she earned it. If she doesn't want to go, I am okay with that too.

I think that the issue is not so simple. They did a 3 jump sequence in their other LP... not with great success though. However, in the gladiator, correct me if I am wrong but I believe they were only doing the two jumps ? Maybe with the choreography it was too hard to do the 3 jumps. The issue wasn't there anyway... It was on the salchow.

May Roman decide what's best for him.

I am glad Gogolev is developing the following and will be entering the worlds with a great reputation. As for women skating, I'm just waiting for Cho to start in juniors. Until then, I don't think anything particularly exciting is going to happen there, no matter who is selected for what. I also wish that Pereira paired up with Nazarychev instead of Micheaud, but that ship had sailed.

Some of it comes off as spiteful, not frustration or disappointment. Going straight into my fave so-and-so should get the assignment because their rival had a bad competition. It's fan war-ish, looking at it as an opportunity for their fave instead of hoping someone else gets a chance. Especially after how heated it was getting at Nationals.

I was surprised Maddy didn’t make the free skate wow. Honestly I don’t watch her skating too much , she is a good skater but not very dynamic. Lia and trennt i find hold back too much. They really had nothing to lose in the long program. They weren’t going to make the podium and they made quite a few mistakes.
