2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Canada was probably going down to only two spots for the foreseeable future in Ice Dance next year at Worlds anyway with G/P probably retiring but even if by some miracle they kept 3 spots do they even have enough teams to fill them? I have never seen this many breakups in one discipline in years. 😲

Canada was probably goin to lose their 3rd spot for ice Dance next W
Well... Lauriault Le Gac may be on the rise. They had a pretty big mistake in the RD at worlds but their FD allowed them to rise up the rankings.

Lajoie and Lagha will definitely get higher in the rankings with the upcoming retirements, especially if Piper and Paul are retiring.

Will it be enough for 13 points ? Probably not. But if that's the case, as we do not have Fabbri -Ayer anymore, it doesn't matter much. Two spots are more than enough.

There are a few teams developing. Robinson-Portz are pretty good. Fournier-Zhu are interesting but have some ways to go. Urban -Beaumont and Bashynska-Beaumont could be both very good.

I enjoyed listening to a bit of Tanith Belbin's ice dance commentary for NBC in Prague. Tanith offers such good insights in a very professional way. Regarding Lajoie/ Lagha, Tanith pointed out how gorgeous Marjorie's carriage is, exemplified by her beautifully arched back. Then, in a nice way, Tanith said she finds Zach's carriage and skating a bit messy and rough around the edges. I hadn't really noticed any of this, but when such observations are pointed out by someone knowledgeable, they can become apparent.

Possibly, Lajoie/ Lagha should lean into this noted difference and find material that can provide them with role-playing and a story to tell. For example, the new Wuthering Hts., or Beauty and the Beast, or something else completely off the beaten track. At the same time, Zach could take ballet classes to improve his carriage. This does not mean he doesn't have good skating skills. It's about posture, stretch, and how moves are extended and finished, e.g., pointing toes and using arms gracefully.

I don't think this noted difference between L&L's on-ice carriage has much to do with the way L&L are being scored recently. The greater challenge for L&L, IMO, and as has been mentioned, is that they need better material and packaging. A few years ago, they were considered to be the team who would move up to take the baton over the next quad. But, they lost a bit of momentum while recovering from injury. When they returned to competition, they did not choose material that enhanced who they are as a team. White Crow, while lovely music, has been used too much recently. Not to mention that L&L have used it before, which makes it a retread. Even their last season's FD music (Sound of Silence) has been used by many other skaters in all disciplines. While it was also beautifully skated by L&L, it was not exciting nor revelatory. It did not do anything to tell a story nor to inform audiences about L&L's personalities and partnership.

OTOH, the colorful FD L&L had a few seasons ago did tell us something about their personalities. It truly suited them and impressed fans, which is a big reason why they were so highly praised back then. Bottom line: Choosing the right music and choreo has become even more important these days to getting noticed and building success.
Oh that’s interesting to hear Tanith’s comments. I will need to pay more attention to his carriage next time. For me, Lala should be up there with Zingas and Kolesnik. I like the idea of them doing more character/story driven pieces - they definitely need something to get out of this rut with their less than ideal programmes and packaging.

I was assuming that the provincial feds knew already because how would Patinage Québec put some of the names they put in list A, unless they are next gen ?

Yeah, they know for sure. But since the team isn't announced publicly until after the NextGen competition, there's been confusion about when skaters are named to the team.

Also, because I love target numbers. The score criteria is below:

Target Total Scores

Do we have a list of all Canadian skaters who achieved the domestic scores at Nationals but didn't get out yet ? :) Justice for Foster !

Poor Foster!! 😭😭😭

For Senior Women - Marie Maude Pomerleau finally hit the 166 senior domestic benchmark at Nationals. I don’t believe she has ever competed outside of Canada. Canada sent out six senior women last season that achieved this benchmark. They achieved the benchmark much earlier in the season.

Senior Pairs - Tristan and Miyu hit the benchmark at Nationals too. I was hoping they’d be sent somewhere after Nationals 😭

I believe that these two entries, will have to attain whatever the new benchmarks are for the new season, again, domestically, if they are to be sent to an international event. Achieving the scores at Nationals seems to be too late for international assignments.

Been wondering about LaLa and how much longer they will stick around. You really could tell how frustrated they were at this years worlds. I mean last year was bad enough when they were 7th but this year to drop to 9th with several teams not completing. If they dont start seeing better results next year do you think they may move on, even if they are the top Can dance team.

well chock and bates were out, the Italians too... but then, zingas kolesnik and FBC were there.
Also, last year, the Lithuanians didn't make the Free Dance... So I'd say that they more or less placed in the same zone.

I don't understand the judging in ice dance anymore.. more than ever LOL.. I don't see how Smart and Dieck managed to win the second best free dance with their, in my opinion (and I know it's not a popular opinion) gimmicky Dune program 2.0.

What I seem to understand though is that if in singles, a short program can kill your chances, in ice dance, what will kill you aside from any technical mistake or lost level is bad programs.

Since Montreal worlds, LaLa haven't had good programs. Without memorable and entertaining programs, they just cannot make their mark.
Also, injuries have meant that they have missed early season events both seasons. It seems like scores rise and rise and rise for many teams competition after competition. So, they need to simply compete earlier with better programs.

I think LaLa are aiming for a full cycle so we will see next year how invested IAM is in what could be the Canadian number 1 team. When they did have Virtue and Moir, they did well for them.

I truly hope LaLa get better programmes and rise like a phoenix. They are one of my favourite ID couples and really don't deserve to be in decline. Please, no! And I'm not even Canadian, just a lover of good skaters and Ice Dancers, and Canadians often fit the the bill!

Happy birthday to My Zachary 😍😜
(even though I didn’t know it was his birthday 😳)
May you continue being artistic, hot and talented. I have faith this upcoming Olympic cycle will be better for you.
(It was mentioned somewhere in my Facebook feed this morning. Another skater also has a birthday today, but I can't recall who. Did anyone else see it on FB?)
