2026-27 Grand Prix assignments are out

I actually think is good more skaters get chances to comepete at this level, especially considering the depth of the field in women or ice dance. We are at the beginning of new quad, there's been a lot of shifts so it's the right time.
I disagree. For single skaters - If lesser known/ranked skaters want opportunities, they can do Challengers. If they do it well, they will be placed on the Alternate List and qualify for GP that way.

I´m not sure what happens now if someone WD (which is likely). Will Ichilov/Nosovitskiy get 1 spot or will Harris/Chan get the 2nd spot instead? I think after the initial assignments they usually rather give the teams on the replacement list two spots before they continue down the list?
I think under the new rules they go strictly down the list, regardless of how many GPs the skaters already have. The only exceptions are if skater is already assigned to GP with opening OR can't be assigned due to limit of 3 entries per country.

added: another exception is skater can't get visa at all or in time, as noted above

Glad to see Junhwan, Deniss, and Donovan on the list
Sad to see no Boyang and Gilles/Poirier in sight :(
I mentioned Boyang to my Chinese boyfriend yesterday to see if he recognized him. He didn't recognize him, but he googled some Mandarin news articles from official Chinese government sources and according to him, their headlines implied that the Milan Olympics were his last dance...😢

As for Grand Prix assignments, I'm excited about Rio Nakata's debut and hope to see him live in Kelowna! 😁

We had two examples last year. Samodelkina and A Selevko. They were ranked 28th and 30th respectively going into last season - they only got one GP assignment. Both were 2nd in their respective GP but they didn't have the chance to compete at another one...

This year we have for women: Young You, Yuseong Kim, Saki Miyake, Olivia Lisko, Rino Matsuike who all have good capabilities to podium in their GPs. But they don't have a 2nd assignment (although Matsuike might get the host spot). Instead we have Sarina Joos, Gabrielle Daleman, Alina Bonillo, Mako Yamashita, Seojin Youn who are all ranked much lower, but still got an assignment.

For men there are no obvious choices although anything can happen between seasons. But Samoilov, Reshtenko, Y Chen, Pitot, Nordebäck are much higher ranked than Ma, Gartung, Rakic, Carrillo, Kazanecki.

I don't follow pairs and dance so I don't know what's going on there.
fair enough.. but all of these are outside shots.

Yes, for men they might be outside shots, but certainly not for the women. And the ones lower down the ranking that got an assignment has even a lesser shot.

Thanks, that is what I thought. Only thing that can change up is of course if someone improves their Challenger score or win if it´s like last season.

However I expect it to already be WDs before Challenger series start, if R/A that seems like the most uncertain card WD in ice dance, my best guess is that Harris/Chan will get GP France and Val/Kazimov GP Finlandia and they both have two spots.

Weird, ISU has two TBD pair spots at Skate America on the grid, but USFS press release says only one spot is TBD. It does have the two dance spots as TBD.

Edit: https://isu-skating.com/figure-skating/news/isu-figure-skating-grand-prix-2026-27-pairs-entries/

This ISU list only has 7 entrants for Skate America.

Didn't Matteo retire after the OLYG? I was surprised to see his name there. On a side note, what is going on with the site? Cloudflare rate limit tempban thinking you're some kind of bot? It took forever just to be able to read a single post. Crazy stuff.

I had this problem for some minutes, but now it seems fixed.
I was also surprised about Matteo Rizzo's presence on the list.

Now that gp assignments are out.
I am surprised at how many OGM are continuing.
We have from the USA alysa liu, amber glenn, ilia malin and from France Beaudry and Cizeron.
I dont recall that many Ogm continuing on.
In fact more stop.
They might come back the year before the Olympics but usually not after.

Most ogm stop or retire. Sarah Hughes tried but she couldn't.
Can someone tell me how many ogm stayed and continued
Yuzuru Hanyu did
Yuna did when she came back in
2013
