Honestly, it's way too early in the season and this whole cranberry nicks thing should be rethought.

This is seriously so disappointing. The first Cranberry Cup had pairs and dance as well (with the Lake Placid facility closed for renovations). There were many old and new favorites (including my Queen, actually my profile photo was taken there). I had a fantastic time including sitting in the Tenley Albright seat. There was also a free live stream although people complained it was slow. I guess they don't have pairs because of John Nicks and I know they don't have dance because it moved back to Lake Placid. They would have to do a LOT better than this before I undertook a 2 day death march there and 4 days back. Was hoping my fiance would be on that list.

It is fun to be at Cranberry on Lobster Day! My general understanding is below.
Disclaimer: Please forgive if I have don't have all the details 100% right -- just trying to offer an explanation that paints the overall picture.

Is it because that block of time is going to the Cranberry Open?

No.
AFAIK, Lobster Day is celebrated throughout the day, throughout the venue.

Lobster Day is a longstanding and beloved tradition that originated from the (many?) years when Yarmouth Skating Club (on Cape Cod) used to host Cranberry Open and when lobster always was featured at the annual dinner that YSC held for Cranberry officials.
Some years ago, YSC was merged into SCOB, and SCOB continues to celebrate Lobster Day -- both at its more recently established Cranberry Cup international as well as at Cranberry Open. (IIRC, there has been at least one year when Cranberry Cup was a standalone event [that included Lobster Day] at SCOB without Cranberry Open happening the same week.)
I think many officials are repeats at Cranberry Open and Cranberry Cup year after year, and most or all of them individually come up with lobster-themed items to wear as they are officiating on Lobster Day. Sweaters, shirts, pants, scarves, hats, headbands, you name it. (LOL, I suspect that several of the "louder"/"sillier" things perhaps are worn only once a year on Lobster Day?)
If they choose, others involved in Cranberry -- some staff and members of SCOB, for example -- also join in the fun with their own lobster apparel. I've seen competitors here and there wearing (off ice) a bit of lobster stuff. (Not sure, but I believe I overheard that lobster socks were the event gift for competitors one year?)
Last year, SCOB's "snack bar" was selling lobster rolls on Lobster Day. I hope the same is true this year.

Oh, I see! Thank you! It's funny because lobster isn't really something I associate w/ the cape, but that totally makes sense. What a fun tradition!
