Memorable Debuts on the JGP

2004 Junior Worlds FD
Anna Cappellini & Matteo Zanni
I am still looking for an active version of this skate - hopefully it appears soon.

Loved these two together and loved Anna with Luca Lanotte. Why did Anna & Matteo split?

From an interview that Anna and Luca did with Ice-Dance.com when they first got together:

Last season, you both were successful with previous partners? What happened to those partnerships?

Anna: My partnership with Matteo Zanni had always been successful and satisfying, but 3 weeks before we competed in Junior Worlds Kitchener 2005 Matteo's father had a horrible car accident and has been in a deep coma ever since. Matteo was obviously desperate and although we were close friends and had supported each other in many tough times during our 5 years together, he just didn't feel like going on and I couldn't blame him.

Luca: When Anna and Matteo split up last April, I was offered to skate with her and although my partnership with Camilla Pistorello was quite satisfying, I thought it was a good chance for me to take.

Wow. I hope Matteo's Dad recovered.

As it turned out, after a season away from competition, Matteo partnered up with Luca's former partner, Camilla Pistorello. But, despite decent results (including winning Junior Nationals), it only lasted one season. He then had another single-sesson partnership with Natalia Mityushina, and then moved into shows and then coaching.

Recently posted were some more Junior Worlds...
Before Tanith & Ben and Flavia & Massimo were these two couples in Gold and Silver
I literally watched this team grow up...

and the other Ameircans who won silver

Tanith Belbin & Benjamin Agosto won the bronze here in 2000 World Juniors

and from Italy - Flavia Ottaviani & Massimo Scali
I loved both of Massimo's partners Flavia & Federica
Who did that stretch split first Gwendal or Massimo?

Before there was a junior Grand Prix, you sometimes first saw exceptional Junior skaters first at their country's senior international event. The JGP did not start until 1997.

I first saw Yamaguchi & Galindo finishing fifth in the FS at Skate America 1986. Kristy is 15, Rudy 17.

Here they are in 1988, winning Junior worlds with a program that very few senior pairs today could match for either creativity or technical content. Kristi is 16, Rudy 18.

The synchronization they achieve while overcoming the difficulties of being a mirror pair is remarkable.

This is my favorite Junior pairs program ever!

I loved them as a pair and was disappointed when they split to go single. He wasn't your typical brawny pairs guy, but he had the perfect personality for it. I heard him say several times in interviews that his purpose on the ice was "to make Kristi look pretty. Even prettier than she already is."

Same - they were going to be the my winners since Tai & Randy could not. It did not happen for them either - Mr. Nicks deserved an Olympic medal. It was clear Kristi was going to be a star. If you read Rudy's book, you know he had all kinds of tragedy at home. I watched him from row 2 at US Nationals one year at Detroit and finally saw the light back in his eyes and knew he was finally on the way back. I was so delighted that he had his skate of a lifetime at Nationals and later Worlds giving us a Baron von Rothbart for the ages. Lovely people too!

Those costumes are something else 😃

Also - just out of interest - isn't that music by John Williams?
Yes written for the 1984 Summer Olympics by John Williams
He became the "IT" composer after the monster success of Star Wars & ET
The kids had big dreams and they made it - and got better costumes!

not the only Chinese pair to skate to an Olympic theme

Oh yes, much better :)

Talk about making an impression - how adorable was little Alexander Abt here.
His musicality was evident early on - this is the program that made me adopt this young man immediately. He got great rhythm and skills and got the crowd clapping along.
