2026-27 Russian Men's Figure Skating

There is these two rules that play together: backfill must be done ASAP and the list is only updated from the Challengers. If the substitute list already existed at the time of the initial assignments (while AIN2 was ineligible), it's Samoilov. If the list was created after AIN2 became eligible, it's Gumennik. If the backfill waits till Kinoshita (bending rule 1), and Gumennik wins, it will have to be Gumennik no matter what.
Maya Bagriantseva says that AINs should be on the alternate list. She's usually a reliable source.

Overall, it is a terrible pity Russia couldn't move fast enough to field a team at Cranberry.
It looks like no one wanted to perform so early and deal with the visa issues.

I *really* wish he can get CoC, the Ugozhaev can go to Kinoshita.
How is one related to the other?

I kinda hope that if Gumennik skates in GP, Ugozhaev gets a Challenger spot, though with the timing, Gumennik can certainly do both. We'll see how this backfill plays out. I like Samoilov as well, he is super fun to watch live, very expressive, big energy.

They want to send the top team to Kinoshita.

Ugozhaev will definitely get his events but later.

Yeah, but this is one year when they could have used it. But given all the circumstances, completely understandable. Fingers crossed ISU moves at some point to update the rosters and then we'll know. I'm antsy for Thursday and the Young Lion's performance in China!

Before the ban the fed was rarely sending skaters to Cranberry anyway (or the alternate competition autumn classic).
Seems like it always have been too early for Russian skaters.
This year, it was particularly problematic because many top skaters were at shows in China (and Semenenko in France) at the time of the event.
