General Ladies Discussion (was original Ladies LP thread)

OK, I get it now. The symbol > in mathamatics means "greater than". So "4CC gala >>> US championship" means that 4CC gala in much more important than the US Championships. I knew that engineering degree would come in handy.

Finally!
:bow::bow::bow:

I'll see your sarcasm and raise you some irony. Because in fact what you meant only in sarcasm is actually somewhat literally valid. Where's the excitement in a competition where none of your skaters have any chance? And not just one competition, or one year, but year after year? Do you expect people to not root for their team? I don't care if you think it's biased. It sucks to have NO CHANCE AT ALL.

To make matters worse - I submit that it sucks for EVERYONE when, as we've seen previously, Yun-a has an INSURMOUNTABLE LEAD after the short. Now we have another free skate with very little excitement. Yun-a already has the gold medal around her neck. So it's bad for everyone (except for whichever Yun-a fans care only about her winning and nothing else), and even worse for the US fans -- not only can no US ladies realistically podium (unless you pray for a Mao Meltdown), the gold medal was already given to Yun-a on Wednesday. Make basketball analogies till you're blue in the face, you're still wrong. If a basketball team only played in 3 or 4 games a year, and 2 of them were over by halftime, it would suck for their sport too.

But US fans still have one reason to watch. We get to see Alissa and Rachael's trial run for Worlds, and speculate on how bad our chances are to end up with 13 standing there.

You do realize what you said above basically means only gold medal matters. Oh, does it?
I admit I partly agree with what you said. I also wish my favorite skater have a good result. But by 'good result', I don't mean only gold medal. It could be podium finish, it could be beautiful performances, it could be improvement, and many others.
Michael Phelps is really dominant right now. It is quite true other swimmers don't really have any chance. So you are saying it sucks for swimming? The freestyle final was less interesting because we all knew Michael was gonna win??

If that's what it is, then I am really embarassed for not noticing: I have a Physics degree...

Haha it's okay, I think it's the 3 <<< signs that threw us off. One would have been more clear.

I'm from the US, I'm not crying in my cornflakes that our MK carbon copys aren't winning left and right.

Me neither, though I'm also Chinese, which means Caroline = <333. But Particle Man, I see what you mean. It does suck to have no chance at all, but the US just has to stick it out through the next Olympic year. The time will surely come again, but it's someone else's turn in the spotlight right now. The US has dominated for sooo long, where's the "interest" in that?

:banging: To all the international fans on this board, I'd like to say this guy doesn't speak for all US fans.

I'm an American who happens to be a fan of Yu-Na. And Mao. And Fumie. and Joannie. And Caroline. And so on. I don't watch figure skating because I like to see the US do well and beat others. I watch because I enjoy the sport and like skaters of a variety of styles, regardless of what country he or she is representing.

It's true, there is an excitement to watch when the outcome is unpredictable, but there is also an excitement to watch beautiful skaters skate at their best even if the outcome is predictable.

Particle Man
Well, I see your point.
For me it may be too hard to understand fully, because my country is not participating at all in skating, so I watch it just because I like it and I even don't care too much about who wins, I just cheer up for my favorites.

As I mentioned in SP thread, I think that Caroline Zhang may have a bright future and others may too, so eventually US team may start winning for sure after a year or two.
Anyway it can't be that you can always win in everything, and when I say "you" I don't mean "US", I mean everyone everywhere...

:agree::)

By the way, I don't know why but whenever I see your name, I read it as 'shallwesandhu'. Weird, huh? :)

In my defense, it was >>>. Umhaha

Exactly!
It's unfortunate circumstances, especially only a year before the Olympics, but the fans have got to be patient.

"THIS GUY" is a fan of Mao, Fumie and Carolina (is that what you meant?) too. So why don't you keep your holier-than-thou attitude to yourself. You all missed the point, but I've come to expect that. I said there's less excitement when your team has zero chance of winning. By aligning yourself against that, what you have then said is that you don't get excited when your team wins. Figure it out.

I don't watch figure skating because I like to see the US do well and beat others.

So you don't like to see your team win, that's nice for you. Hmm, I wonder how many of the crazed asian fans there would still be if Yun-a always had zero chance of winning a medal. How many of the crazed Yun-a fans ARE crazed Yun-a fans simply because she dominates? What hypocrisy.

the crazed asian fans? can you be more specific?

I have to say I don't really appreciate your tone here. I happen to be a Yuna fan and that makes me automatically 'crazed' 'asian' by your definition? Hm. Nice.
I have to say Yuna dominating is part of the fun but it doesn't really matter for me. I know I'll be Yuna fan even if she doesn't compete. Like there are tons of Michelle fans out there even now. Is it that difficult for you to admit lots of Yuna fans are not crazed, asian, and winning-addicted?

If no chance of winning means no fun for you, it is totally fine, but please. For heaven's sake.

And if you can't stop insulting collective Yuna fans, I can't help but mention some crazy Mao fans because obviously you're big fan of Mao.... Do you know almost every nice comments on Yuna's youtube clips are marked as spam by you know who? I would say that's some crazed Mao fans. And you'll say that doesn't make all Mao fans crazy, and I'll say same goes for Yuna fans.

Nuff said.

Gourry - wasn't implying you were a crazed Yun-a fan. I mean stuff like that youtube clip of the GPF, where an entire arena screams and then the entire arena stops cold 2 seconds later. That's just spooky.

Last edit -- this thread was supposed to be for the Ladies LP which happens in 3 1/2 hours, let's just table all the other crap till that actually happens. We're already 4 pages in.

You didn't say there was only less excitement. You made it sound as if there was no excitement at all in watching.

Perhaps you don't realize how angry you sound in your posts, but you come off as if you're saying it sucks, sucks, sucks and there's no point in watching because the leader is going to win.

What I'm saying is even if the result is predictable, though I don't entirely agree with that statement because anything could happen, it's still exciting to watch everyone skate especially the programs from skaters I enjoy.

NO, I do like to see my team win. It's just we have a different definition of team. My "team" doesn't consist of only U.S. skaters. I like to see U.S. skaters win and I like to see skaters from other countries win. If the U.S. ladies are going through a gold medal drought, then so be it as long as the results are fair and they aren't being robbed of medals they earned.

Yu-Na is such an inspiration to so many young girls in Korea. She's a huge celebrity over there apparently, with paparazzi following her around and everything. The situation is completely different compared to elite skaters in Canada anyway. I think we need to understand that she's Korea's first big skating star and we need to appreciate Korea's need to celebrate her and not demean their celebration by calling them "crazed asian fans".

You call it 'crazed asian' fans, I call it 'enthusiastic home' fans.
You call it 'spooky', I call it 'honest, disappointed, comprehensible'.
Different perspective, fine. Just trying to show some respect would be nice.

You can assign whatever politically correct adjectives make you feel good. The youtube is worth 1000 words. My point was -- you're implying people are unenlightened for being excited for their team to win. But look at that freaking video. And shouldn't some of them still be excited and happy for her good skate, not all get silent just cause she didn't win?

That's enough of this. The 4CC ladies LP is what the thread should be about.

Perhaps you should take some of your own advice and keep your "holier than thou" attitude to yourself...

Anyways, looking forward to the long program. I am thouroughly enjoying this competition so far, a lot of great skates!

Wow, this is crazy. I'm not sure if I am the odd man in or out as I'm from the United States and whom I root for has nothing to do with what country the skater is from. I have never found myself rooting for the "home team". I never even thought of it that way. I was/is a rabid Kwan fan, but I suspect I would have been regardless of her country of origin. Right now I am most inspired by Patrick Chan. I always thought of the skaters as individuals, I guess I never saw it as a team sport. Evan is my least favorite skater at this level of any discipline at any point in my skating fandom dating back to 1976, does that make me un-American? I just don't enjoy his skating but respect his competitive ability. Right now to say I wouldn't watch if an American lady had no chance of winning would be more or less saying I'm not going to watch - I enjoy the sport no less. I have seen many controversies, IMHO, in the judging, but it was never motivated by being defensive of the "home team". I think hating America is pretty common and many times deserved and that probably bleeds over into skating, but again, hard to prove. Go YuNa!
