Is Mirai the One?

Yes. It's a little painful to read about and makes her seem very young and vulnerable. If I were a US skating boss, I'd send her to the Michelle Kwan School of Thinking Like a Champion.

She seems hardworking by nature. Perhaps some guilty feelings for not being able to practice as much as she thought she should?
 
Mirai could be a dominant "UGH-guess-who-won-again?"-style force in skating if she could just rotate her jumps as consistently as someone like Rochette.

No, she could be dominant if she could start getting the PCS she deserves. What will that take? More exposure to the judges so that they are more aware of her?

Mirai is a 2-time world jr medalist, the judges are certainly aware of her but are not willing to put her in the top ranks of the world ladies yet. Even if she got the PCS she deserved, might be able to medal at a GP event but not at the biggest of the big competitions.

By moving to Frank and being willing to take some tough love from him, she's already shown she wants to improve, knows the problem, and is willing to put the work in, at least for now. She first needs to get her technique solid and dependable and without UR's, then deal with the PCS side. It doesn't work the other way around (reference: Alyssa). She has enough solid skating basics, inherent performance ability and feel for music, so that she'll be able to refocus on this later.

I think whoever mentioned that at SC free skate, Frank may have told her to focus only on technical and forget about the performance side, may have been right on the money. Given the weakness of the ladies competition as it played out, Mirai possibly could have medaled had she played her program a bit differently, but I think Frank's playing a much smarter strategy for the long term. She did get the highest TES in the FS and I think Frank will focus on that in the short term as something she can take comfort in and build on. Which may serve her in far better stead for next season than trying for the international instant gratification medals this year.

I was listening to this clip this morning and I wonder about a few comments Mirai made. It sounds like she is progressing but she mentions that Carroll was going to withdraw her from SC if she started crying again before her LP....?

Apparently she had some sort of emotional problem at COC too.
Thinking back to last year at Natls and seeing Mirai take the ice in tears and hearing about her mental state at both GP's this season makes me wonder if she is mature enough for senior level events.

I think it is good she switched coaches and hopefully the tough love from Carroll will continue until Mirai learns to control her emotions better at competitions.

Hopefully this will make her a better competitor but it is even more important if she can use these experiences to make her a stronger person after her skating career is over.

I think so too. But it's not just the emotional part, it's not having so many UR calls- she seems to be improving there as well.

Yeah, I mean she went from having 5 UR triples in her CoC FS to 0 UR triples (5 clean triples) at SC which was only a few weeks later. She still had 2 doubles downgraded at SC, but that's not as worrisome. Mirai is very mentally tough it seems judging by how little she falls, and she's grown up to have a very athletic body type which should help, not hurt, her skating and power. She skates very fast and her jumps are high, her spins and spirals are great, the rotation of her triples is her only weakness now so once she fixes that and gets used to her new body I think she will be tough to beat

Their voices are so funny! I mean it was one thing when they talked like that when they were 14 year olds who looked 12...now they are 16 year olds who look 16 and still have those high pitched little voices.

Caroline definitely has the socal attitude going on

There have only been 2 others that captivate me when on the ice like she does. Remarkable young talent with a great personality, in a very general term she reminds me of Dorthy from the "charm factor" standpoint. I hope the best for her in this sport and EVERY aspect of her life.

She may have some emotional growth coming, but that shows she is full of heart and not as cold as the ice.

If Mirai continues to progress I could easily see her as the next American skating Queen.

I think your comments were right and Mirai not only has a big personality but a big heart too. :love:

I hope she skates her best at Natls and earns a trip to the Olympics. If not I hope she will use it as a motivator and come back stronger nest season.

Mirai definitely has a lot of potential. And she has good jumps, speed, flexibility, spins, and presentation - she has an all-around package, now we just have to wait. I think she should get programs with Yuna-type music, I think now that she's grown up she could really shine at a sophisticated program
