Will Mao make the Oly team?

"Will Mao make the Oly team?"

With all the money Mao's sponsors have been dumping on her, she doesn't need to make the Olympic team, ....... nor even skate at all for that matter. She can retire, go to college, start a business, get married. She can do whatever she wants.

No way, she's not that much taller than Yuna and Yuna is 5'4 I believe.

http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=yuna+kim&init=quick#/photo.php?pid=2721748&id=53417067377

Oh okay, my bad. Her ISU bio says she is 163 cm which is 5'4", Yuna is 164 cm - 5'4.5". There is a little variation in the height of skates but they do look to be about the same height. 5'4" is the height of most figure skaters so I don't think that is really an issue then.

Carolina is 169 cm - 5'6.5" and she does look about 2+ inches taller than Mao and Yuna in this picture from last year's GPF: http://cache4.asset-cache.net/xc/84...9FCD9D575A2334E3EAF511E6634B7B01E70F2B3269972

I think I always assume they are taller because skates add like 3 inches

If memory serves, Shizuka Arakawa was 5'7. Carolina Kostner I know is around 5'7 and looks it!

I thought Shiz was 5'5"? Multiple sources say she is 165cm. Also someone above said that very few Japanese females are 5'7".

Carolina definitely does look that tall if not taller. The two new girls to the GP, Joshi Helgesson of Sweden and Sarah Hecken of Germany, are both 5'7". Cynthia Phanuef and Alexe Gilles also 5'7" and Emily Hughes and Kiira Korpi are both 5'6". Most of the other European ladies are around 5'5" (Lepisto, Sebestyen, Leonova, Meier), as are Alissa and Mirai, and Yuna.

What happened to the age of tiny skaters? I thought they used to be all around 5'2" and now a bunch of them are fairly tall. I guess some of the Japanese ladies are still tiny

Mao's gonna make the team. seniorita and others put it perfectly. Even if she doesn't do too well at this year's Japan Nationals, she is one of the few women who have a good chance of overtaking YuNa even if YuNa skates well.

Shizuka Arakawa is one of the most statuesque skaters I've seen! There should be more tall girls skating.

well she could always try Yu-na's strategy of 3 2A in the long... shes good at that atleast
Wah, wah, wah. Maybe she should, so you can continue your sour crying about it. :agree: It never gets old, right?

I wonder if Yuna's double axel can be considered a TRUE double axel? I think a true double axel should be one where the skater steps into the jump. Yuna just sort of throws herself into the double axel jump without crouching down or stepping into it, and so she tends to telegraph her axel jumps.

It's lucky such poor technique isn't downgraded in COP, even the more so because this (poor) technique actually enables Yuna to do an ina bauer before her double axel, which gets bonus points.
LOLOLOL! I see you're on your way to becoming a successful skating coach...

Pardon me for the unfortunate choice of words. However, just to clarify, when I said 'crouch', I wasn't thinking 'hunch down'. I was thinking more in the lines of crouching down using deep knees. I hope that's better choice of words.

So, by the way, which is usually considered better technique? Plushenko's or Joubert's? Is Joubert's technique only acceptable only so far as he still does the
rotations or is it really the case that both techniques are considered equally good?
Why are you asking us? I thought you were the axel jump expert. ;)

There are tall girls skating now though! Not everyone is super short like Michelle and Sasha anymore and it's nice to see :)

LMAO to the last comment. Let's just see what Mao can do at the Olympics, I kinda tend to think Yuna will still beat the pants of her, but you never know. Yuna at her best is certainly better than Mao at her best though, in my mind at least. Ever since I saw Yuna live i've been obsessed

So, you're saying the beautiful 3A like this should be downgraded?

The poor tech. is when you see someone bend their upper body below their waist line to jump - slow down, hop and jump. That's probably the least efficient way of doing any jump.

Personally, I think Ilia Kulik was the best jumper.

And slow-down, hop & jump back to create some space in the air is like fade-away jumper while Kulik's is Jordanish slam dunk.

Mao has a very nice 3a, when she lands it. I think she should put it in her programs, but I think attempting 3 is a little ambitious, 1 or 2 would be enough. I guess she needs 3 if she's going to try and win though.

Interesting about the double axel technique, Yuna's 2a has always looked fine to me. I have a couple questions about Yuna though:

1.) Does she practice the 3a? Has she ever landed one? Considering she has beautifully mastered everything else, it seems like the next logical thing she would work on.

2.) Why does she only attempt 6 triples in her FS? I know she obviously doesn't need the points but when you think how a lot of other skaters, Joannie, Akiko, Rachael, Miki if she hits her 3-3 and 2a-3t, Caroline, all attempt 7 triples. If she swapped one of her 2a for a triple jump instead it might give her more of a cushion if she has a freakout at the Olympics. 6 triples and a 3-3 and a 2a-3t comprising 3 of them is a lot to bank on, if she messes up either combination she's down to 4, which because she's Yuna is still probably enough to win but yeah.

Yuna can only attempt 6 triples in the FS because she doesn't do/have the triple loop (and the triple axel).

Can't you do two of the same jump in a program though? I know she already does two 3lutz, and two 3toe in her combinations, but couldn't she put another 3flip or 3sal into her program?

You can only repeat 2 jumps (here, 3Lz and 3T), and at least one of each jumps must be in combination (Yuna does 3Lz-3T, solo 3Lz and 2A-3T), so she can't add any more triples unless she adds the loop, which I believe she's very uncomfortable with in a program.

Right, and training the loop is what hurt her hip. That jump is not happening. Really why should she? She repeat her two hardest jumps, has upped her combo to a lutz/toe and gets enough points on GOE on everything to more than make up for the 5 points or so on a loop. If she gets close to +2 on each double Axel that is 4 points right there.

You are right I was just wondering. Plus her combos are difficult, doing both a 3lz-3t and a 2a-3t in the FS. The 2a-3t is in the second half too so it has a base value of 8.25 which is more than a 3lz-2t or a 3t-3t. I just thought it would be cool is Yuna did 7 triples in the FS and broke 220 or something insane like that

Actually, Yuna has landed 7 triples in the FS (07-08 Cup Of Russia), but the score was less than what she received in TEB this year ;)

To answer the question that I myself posed in this thread, yes, she will.

Someone clarified the rule and it seems that Mao can never miss it. They use the World ranking as one of the criteria. So JSF can pull Miki Ando four years ago even if she underperforms at Nationals.

That said, I hope she does well at Nationals.

True, and I think that was a little weird. Sometimes I wonder where all those points she is getting are coming from!

I thought the same thing too until I saw her live. She is so fast and slender and her jumps are HUGE. Plus she has a great presence on the ice.

You mean she wasn't fast and slender with huge jumps when she did a 7 triple FS in 07-08 Cup Of Russia?
