Um, yes, she is the one. She just beat SASHA COHEN in the SP. Sasha Cohen was clean too.

You know she did a killer short program tonight, but I really enjoyed just seeing her personality shine though. Last year, I feel we didn't get to see that because she was masked in the grief of injury and the pressure of being the reigning U.S. champ.
I've really enjoyed her humor, her smile. It's like she knows who she is and what she is capable of. I noticed that when she was landing jumps in warm up. It was like land -- OK here I am.

Yeah, agree, but spins and spirals are part of the TES score not PCS so it makes since that that part of Mirai's score was higher even though Rachael had the 3-3.
This is good news because it means if Rachael and Mirai both have clean LPs, Mirai with 6 triples is capable of beating Rachael's scores with 7. I really want both of them to make the team though! Worried about Sasha though, she was great tonight! Ashley's about 7 points behind which could very easily be made up in the free but provides the top 3 with a bit of a cushion.

I think Mirai is another "SP skater" but I do hope she holds it together for the long...she skates last after all...
I think how she does will depend partly on whether Flatt (who skates before her) can bring down the house or not. Clearly that affected Czisny when Rachel put down the SP of her life right before her.

You know what? Mirai just "converted" me!
I used to dislike her skating (a lot actually...) especially because of her jumps. She used to have awkward landings, where she would land on the inside edge and then swerve to the outside edge (with little speed).
But her jumps are so clean edged now! I think if she goes on this path, she'll be a huge competitor! A new fan in the making!

You know what? Mirai just "converted" me!
I used to dislike her skating (a lot actually...) especially because of her jumps. She used to have awkward landings, where she would land on the inside edge and then swerve to the outside edge (with little speed).
But her jumps are so clean edged now! I think if she goes on this path, she'll be a huge competitor! A new fan in the making!
I see Mirai with the potential as early as next season to challenge for top spots on Intl podiums. I do not see that for any other USA Lady right now.
Mirai's opening 3x2 was so clean and effortless it looks like only a matter of time (over the summer) before it will be a 3x3.
Her speed is such an asset and she is already one of the worlds best spinners.
Just so much natural talent that looks like it is being properly channeled and supported by hard work. Maturity is helping too.

This is true, but Mirai is pretty tough and resiliant (physically). I know last year at nationals she didn't place well but she didn't crumble either, she landed all her jumps in the SP and LP and didn't double any of them. Based on the way her technique is looking now, I tend to think she will at least stay upright. URs don't seem to be much of any issue anymore, except on her doubles in combinations, I think if she focuses though she can get those clean.
Plus Mirai has skated last before, 2 years ago, she fell on the 2a and then did a great performance. She also has a bit of a cushion on Ashley, 8 points, so if she can get 3rd (very doable) then she'll get to go to Worlds which would still be really exciting for her. I still think she can be 1st or 2nd though, but it depends on how everyone else does. I feel like Sasha will stumble but after last night I'm not so sure.

Definitely.. That 3-3 would have gotten huge -GOE internationally as well as a downgrade probably..
Rachael also had less speed than Mirai and Sasha. There should definitely have been a larger point differential between Rachael and Mirai/Sasha. Although Ashley fell on her flip I thought the rest of the program was beautiful. I'll be happy with Mirai/Ashley or Mirai/Sasha making the team, in whatever order.

The 3t on the end of the combo was actually pretty clean, it was just the landing of the flip that was awkward. I don't know, Mirai IMO was a lot better than Rachael and Sasha, but I think it's ok the scores are so close because they all did awesome. I can't speak for Sasha but we also know from experience that Rachael and Mirai are both very capable of putting down a nice clean LP.
I'm curious to see if Sasha will stumble or be clean again, and if Alissa will come back fighting in the FS or just do her usual performance, if Ashley will be able to make the Olympic team after her SP, and if Christina will do a repeat of her awesome JGPF LP. So excited!
Last night was a really good night of skating overall. I'm happy there wasn't too much splatting going on among the frontrunners.
