Men's Short Program.. Tuesday 16th, 7:15PM EST

Whew! What a wild ride.

Heartbreaking for Joubert, Verner, and Abbott. But the skaters who excelled really lifted the heart. If I had been able to choose who came in at the top, Daisuke and Evan would have been two of my choices. I was especially worried about Daisuke because of the aftereffects of the injury and the surgery. And oh, my goodness, Lambiel! What a treat to watch such inventive footwork and spins. I don't care whether he medals or not, as long as he has the kind of skate in the long that he had in the short, and we get to see it.

Definitely Plushenko was impressive, especially after several years away from competition. I'm not a huge fan of his, but it's great to see a skater who's not even faintly affected by nerves. My top fave performances were Takahashi, Lambiel, and Lysacek, with Brezhina not far behind. Here's hoping for a long program where everyone stays on his feet (except when in the air in a jump!)
 
I only got home from work in time to see the last three guys. So happy for Evan. Can't wait to watch the rest of the guys. The protocols, do look like they rewarded all the top skaters' strengths to lead to such a close result.

I say it doesn't matter because I'm sure the final ranking will be decided by a wider margin than that. I don't think skating earlier hurt Daisuke that much, either. He still earned the third highest PCS of the night, after Lambiel and Evan. I think the judges just have a very iffy grip of what PCS requirements are.
 
I am Plushenko's fan, but it's not the point... I think it's unfair to score combo 3Lz+3T =10.00, ànd risky and really difficult
4T+3T =13.80. Of course it is safer to jump 3+3, not concentrating on jumps but more on program components. It's sad when men stay on a safer side, ladies have become far more challenging and men have gone 20 years back. It's become a dissapointment, sad for Verner and Joubert for attemting and not being granted. All top 10 ladies have 3+3...Mao has 3A... and is more stable with it than most men...sad!

On the whole I liked the way top 3 skated and Weir, it was adorable, Chan, Oda and Kozuka were clean but not WOW! it's gonna be very tough, a real battle!
 
How have the women become more challenging? All of the top ten ladies have a 3-3? Does Rochette? Meier? Suzuki? Ando? Nagasu? I mean, have they landed it in the past year? Which ten ladies are you referring to?

The CoP doesn't really award risks. Mao doesn't really get awarded for attempting 3A. It's really more about perfecting your programs and making the least mistakes under this new system. There was more orignality in the old system, so skaters were more likely to try risky combos back then.

I don't like Evan's skating, and he's too much of a metrosexual for me to think he's attractive, but I think he's a cutie off the ice. He gave Mirai Nagasu driving lessons over the summer. And in an interview when Chan was blasting Joubert for always doing the quad, Evan went yeah... I think he does the quad because he can...
 
Wonder what Plushenko's reaction will be in the K&C if he's put into 2nd or 3rd after the long....... Oh!!!!! I can't even imagine. Maybe poker face? or will Mishin look even more pissed than him?
 
I think Evan will make mistakes in the long. Yevgeny will skate his typical clean, soulless program. Weir will skate his heart out and get crap for scores as usual. Takahashi will make mistakes. Lambiel..doesn't seem to matter what he does, he is held up regardless, but I'm guessing he will not medal.

I'm a huge Weir fan and I'm not giving up on him for a medal.

Not really. Only stable/consistent 3+3s for ladies right now, IMO, are Kim's and Flatt's.

And skaters shouldn't be rewarded just for "attempting" a difficult jump.. If they fail, then they fail. That's taking the risk..
 
Rochette can be with a medal only providing she's clean in Canada and Meier was way overscored in Europeans like Lambiel today... Yuna, all Japanese, italians, Americans, Russians. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't like men)))

Oh, I'm just biased because I've known people who knew Evan. My personal dislike of him is well... personal.
 
I went back to Wiki to see the Men's history of the "pimp spot" and it can go either way. Plushy can be like Yagudin and win or be like Takahashi and fall to 8th.

But all I ask is for everyone to not hold back. I don't want a splatfest or too safe performances. Take it from Pang & Tong! Just do it!
