Mao Asada news

I dont remember where we discussed for AOI but I saw some wonderful pictures from Shen Zhao marriage, I havent seen so beautiful pictures before, Mao in golden dress -i never liked a split so much since Sasha-and her spiral photo is awesome!

Very cool photos. I love Mao in that white dress.
Just wondering: Does anyone know if a skater gets less points for a spiral if they hold their knee the way Mao does? For instance, would a skater with far less extension than Mao get more points for doing that same spiral without using their hand to help keep their leg up?

Huh? There are different type of spirals and some of them require some hand help. The fan spiral, which is the one Mao usually does, doesn't require hand assistance. This spiral in her new program (the Y spiral?) requires it.

I'm talking about her arabesque spiral (that's what's called, right?) In her program last year, Mao holds her leg up at the knee. Others like, Yuna, don't. I'm just wondering if using your hand to keep your leg up gets you fewer points or if it doesn't matter.

ETA: I just tried looking it up on Wikipedia and I think this is what I'm talking about "A Kerrigan spiral is a high-leg outside spiral performed with one hand supporting the knee of the free leg. This position is named after Nancy Kerrigan."
I guess it looks so similar to the arabesque spiral that I didn't realize it had a different name. Anyway, Mao did that sort of spiral last year. It was very beautiful, I thought. I'm just wondering if it gets the same amount of points. Does it matter what spiral positions the skater chooses to do?

She didn't do an arabesque spiral in her SP last year. In fact, Mao hasn't done that spiral in her SP since 2006. She usually does the Kerrigan spiral, which requires hand assistance.

Edit: I just saw your edit. :) And no, it doesn't matter which type of spirals the skater chooses to use in their program as long as they fulfill the basic criteria for spirals.

Ah, thanks. And good! Mao has my favorite spirals of any skater today.... I noticed sometimes she only got level 3 last season, I didn't get why. Maybe she didn't hold them long enough? Anyway, doesn't matter. Two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist - and it sounds like we're going to get her for four more years  Go Mao!!

ETA: Okay, I just tried both spiral positions in my bedroom. Not a particulary good idea 10 years after I quit dancing. :disapp:: I learned two lessons: 1. One position is definitely NOT easier than the other. I didn't even come close to being able to reach my knee, and I can totally see why only a skater of Mao's flexibility can pull this off. 2. Don't try this at home, people. Ouch.

Not all of the photos come up for me, but the ones I saw were beeeeeeeeeeeeautiful! The photographer is absolutely amazing! Mao is stunning in the first piece. And I love her expression in the tango piece. Reminds me of her wonderful "Por una cabeza" exhibition (of course the dress helps too, heh). But if she keeps those wonderful expressions during her competition SP's, then it's definitely going to be her most expressive competitive program ever. Can't wait! The photographer adds in the comments that he took picture sof Mao with the attitude of approaching a goddess.

Little Zijun Li is so cute!

Pang/Tong look very elegant in their new SP.

Photo #4 (Plushenko) is extremely well done.

The singer (last photo) is very pretty. The photographer says in the comments that she has the most beautiful voice he's ever heard (and he didn't even like her prior to the show).

That photo of Joannie with the split jump has the *perfect* shadow. Amazing.

Thanks for the photos, seniorita. The photos are great. Kudos to the photographer. Oh boy, Plushy did Sex Bomb

Who knows who the petit Asian girl is? I can't recall having seen her.

She is a chinese junior skater,Zijun Li. She would compete at this year's junior grand prix. She was originally assigned to Austria. But unfortunately she had an injury on her feet. The Chinese federation swaps her schedule with another girl. Therefore she would compete at the last junior grand prix event. I am sure she has two assignments. But I forgot the other one...She is currently working on 3t3t and 2a3t.

To clarify, it is Zijun who's working on 2A-3T and 3T-3T, and there are videos of her practice that I posted links to in another thread.

The other skater is Kexin Zhang. But are you sure they've been swapped? Zijun seemed to skate okay in S/Z's wedding show. And the official ISU website for JGP Graz still lists her as the competitor.

I've been thinking about Maria Tallchief (America's first prima ballerina) lately, and what came to mind was what Goldie Hawn said about her when she inducted her in 1996 at The Kennedy Center Honors, which I wrote down at the time because it was so touching:

But time is cruel to a dancer...and steals from the body...what the soul needs most to say. She speaks now through her memories to the future of dance. When she teaches steps that were created for her...she passes down more than dance...she passes on what it is to be a dancer.

The part I highlighted in bold is what I wish most for Mao to convey in her skating. What does it feel like, Mao-chan, to be a skater? to hit a triple axel? Lol, I know for me, personally, when you hit both of those triple axels at the 2010 Olympics I felt like Superwoman, literally, I honestly felt like going outside & running a hundred laps around the neighborhood. :D

And when Oksana skated, I always felt her joy, her effervescence, her love of skating, and her love of God. As I did when Michelle skated "Dreams of Gold" and "The Red Violin".

I want more programs like "Por una Cabeza" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY7jXgLmAbM), to feel vicariously through you what it is to be skater, or something completely different ~ blow me away with another masterpiece! :)

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the replies. She's only 12 years old & has already won the Chinese Nationals silver! Good for her. I checked out her SP to East of Eden. She needs more work in the jump department, but her other qualities are quite nice. It doesn't hurt that the music itself never fails to move me. I'm sorry to hear that she's been injured. Hope she recovers & masters her combo jumps.

Zijun Li is really nice! And it's great that she's skating to "East of Eden". Maybe she's a Kwan fan. :)

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't imagine anyone saying it better, Nadine. That's what skating can give us that no other sport can offer. For me, I'd add "Lyra Angelica" and "Song of the Black Swan" of Michelle's. Of course there are other moments--moments when we forget to breathe as we watch--some of the professional routines of Klimova and Ponomarenko, and that duet (can't call it a pair program, somehow) that Gordeyeva did with Kulik for Stars on Ice...I agree about "Por Una Cabeza," as well.

I totally agree with you, Olympia. :) Btw, I meant to say "Fields of Gold", not "Dreams of Gold", which is a book by Maynard F. Thomson. My apologies on the mistake.

We skating fans are such a small group (compared to other sports) that it is best for us all to stick together, no matter our differences. What we all have in common is our love of this most beautiful sport, which does make us connoisseurs with the most discriminating taste for thee very best. (;^)

On that note, how could I forget to mention Janet Lynn & "Blue Danube" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrR6nOXaXgA), which I must have watched at least 100 times, literally. More than any other skater her love of God is evident in this piece...those arms like musical notes raised heavenward...the light that shines from within literally radiating about her aura like a halo. Unforgettable, that's what she is...

p.s. and back on topic ~ GOOOOOOO MAO!!!!! :)

Hello, I heard that Mao had an open practice session. Apparently, she debuted her LP there. Can anyone give me updates? I'm dying to learn about her LP!!

It is not really news but I m catching up summer now so sorry if it has been posted but I m watching The Ice and I saw this backstage 10min documentary and I cracked up, lol at the maoshenko comments and the "Mao could compete with us!" Beside that I have no idea what they say but this show seems to have been very original!
