Caroline Zhang

Good for her for continuing to push through competitions. What elements did she complete? Will be curious to see if she can put two solid programs together back to back.

I am shocked to see so many old time posters who are supposed to be knowledgeable fans to get excited over a competition where Caroline wins with a 74+ LP score. Defeating a bunch of nobodies will not be anything to fall back on, such a score will be sending her to the bottom of a serious "A" competition pronto.

There is no rule that says knowledgeable skating fans cannot comment favorably in any given situation. You know freedom of speech and all.
You accomplished 3 snarks in one post, really.

She may have been first in this particular club field, but 53 in SP (and PARTICULARLY 74 in FS) basically indicates that the writing is on the wall. She is finished...sorry.

I think that she is just getting her feet under her during these summer competitions. She isn't in top form yet. Just consider the world champion, Patrick Chan who debuted his long program at Golden West. His jump content was severerly lacking (five triples?) and that wouldn't have one him any medals. Well, since he is crazily overscored, maybe he would have, but you get the point!!!

I am rooting for Caroline because she is coming back, re-working her technique and working through some difficult problems. Skating isn't just about winning medals. Its about perseverence, self discipline, expression, and most of all the love of the sport. Caroline has some beautiful skating moves and her jumps seem to be coming back. Maybe she won't win any medals, but I hope she has a great season and accomplishes her own personal goals.

Point taken RD. But I prefer to wait until Caroline's announces that she is finished, sorry.

Well certainly after the nosedive she took she is to be given some credit for sticking it out. I never directly tell skaters they should retire, but I will say when I think their best days are over. This is the case for Zhang.

Yeah I agree with you herios. In fact, seventy four in the LP is an incredibly low score and it probably means that her jumps are very very shaky. That kind of an LP performance places the skater outside the top 15 at Nationals.

Well, objectively speaking, with that kind of a score, a skater is finished as a competitor. Just in terms of placements at the Grand Prix events and Nationals. I do admire Mao Asada for still placing relatively well despite jump problems, but even Mao knows that without the jumps there will be no wins of any kind.

I agree with this.^ I've watched many skaters over the years who really have no chance to make the podium continue because they love the sport. I don't really think Caroline has much of a chance to win a medal, but it is her time, her body taking the punishment, and her (or her parents) money. If she wants to continue, then she should do so. Its not up to me to say "retire". JMO
