Akiko Suzuki thread: a beautiful and brilliant performer!

She would be a FAR better World Champion than Czisny. (I'm STILL mad at Scott H. for calling Alissa "everything you could want in a lady skater. Baloney.) Who'da thunk it!

I agree with you. Czisny wows me with her spins but that's it. She is slow, she can't skate to dynamic music. Her skating is quite boring except spins. Her jump technique is simply embarrassing.

She landed her first 3-3 in competition (unless I'm really forgetting something) at the age of 26, after a comeback from anorexia. She is amazing. I cannot put into words how impressive that is. It's just unreal.

Cheers for Akiko! I'm finally a convert.

jasminum, thanks for sharing her story about the Hershey Centre. I'm glad she's come out from the shadow of her past, and the shadow of her skating federation. How sad...and what a triumph.

Exactly! Once in a while she has a good program and exceeds herself but usually I just wait for the final combo spin. (Which is great!) I like her, but I just don't see her as the best by a long shot.

Same here. I wish she could line up two final spins in the end so that I could use the rest of her skating as bathroom break. She's been posturing a lot. But the choreography of her programs is rather elementary.

Why doesn't she ever try to skate to dynamic music? Does she dislike it?

Probably because she only has one expression: anxiety and worry. :sheesh: It matches some lyrical music but nothing else. Some people are fooled into thinking this is artistry.

She did skate to Mask of Zorro in 09-10 but the program still was on the pretty side.
I liked her Doctor Zhivago program. I don't know if I'd call the music dynamic but it's intense, and that added something to her skating (which was otherwise the same... with the two basic expressions: amazed radiant smile and moony wondering look). That was my favorite of her programs, along with the Swan.

Alissa is a lyrical skater to the core. I would love to see her exploit her dynamic side next time.

Not every skater can skate to dynamic music, especially female skaters due to limitation of their capacity. I'm afraid Alissa will likely fall more than 3 times per FP on average if she's forced to skate to some fast music.

Congratulations Akiko for winning the 2011 NHK Trophy and for qualifying for the Grand Prix Final.
She has earned a new personal best score of 185.98!

^ So proud of Akiko!   "Die Fledermaus!" She's so joyful on the ice!

Akkiko consistently picks great music for her freeskates that emphasize this joyful quality in her skating as well as her speed and ability to perform. I wish more skaters could use the music as she does.

She is one of those precious skaters that will be forever loved and treasured for their passion, love and commitment for the sport.
She is so beautiful and so amazing.

Akiko has demonstrated such heart as an athlete. The competitive level within Japan is obviously so intense, and the adoration for Mao and Miki must make it seem as if all there is in skating life for ladies in Japan is to battle for bronze, or just a "spot" Her joi de vivre and attack, make it clear that she has joy and fearlessness, which would be wonderful to see in younger skaters (not the 'fearless super young' like 14-16 yrs old) but 18-21... those in sort of their 3-6th years, maybe not breaking through quite, and questioning themselves.

Akiko should serve as an inspiration to others, to persist with dedication, find ones strong suit, and work it to the max.

She truly is. Not only for figure skater but for every person that has a dream!
