Yuzuru Hanyu: 2010-12 Season

Yuzuru Hanyu (羽生 結弦; born December 7, 1994) is a Japanese figure skater and ice show producer, widely considered one of the greatest athletes in the sport’s history. Celebrated for his technical mastery, artistry, longevity, and global influence, he began skating at age four and competed in men’s singles from 2004 to 2022.

Hanyu made history as the first men’s singles skater in 66 years—since Dick Button—to win consecutive Olympic gold medals (2014, 2018), and he became the first Asian man to claim Olympic gold in the discipline. He is a two-time World champion (2014, 2017), a six-time Japanese national champion (2012–2015, 2020–2021), and the first singles skater to capture four straight Grand Prix Final titles (2013–2016).

With his victory at the 2020 Four Continents Championships, Hanyu completed the coveted “Super Slam,” becoming the first men’s singles skater to win every major junior and senior international title. He is also the only singles skater to top the ISU World Standings for five consecutive seasons (2014–2018). Over the course of his career, he broke world records 19 times—the most in singles skating under the ISU Judging System introduced in 2003—and was the first to land a quadruple loop in international competition, among numerous other milestones.

Yuzuru Hanyu

Hi everybody, although I am a new member, I've been paying attention to the forum for some time now.

Yuzuru is the new, and rising skater in men's figure skating. He's one of my favourite skaters, and my absolute favourite new skater. I love his Romeo and Juliet FS - it just takes my breath away. It's not exactly the type of music I would expect a 16 year old to skate to, assuming he hasn't been through the pain of lost love (of course, he might have...I wouldn't know).

What do you guys think about him? I definitely think he will be a podium threat at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. I predict he will be a world champion by 2014, and win the Japanese Nationals within the next few years. He has so much talent...if only he can improve his physical strength and stamina

Yuzuru's been my favorite male skater since I saw his Firebird program from Japanese Jr. Nationals. He's absolutely breath-taking to watch. I love how he gives his whole body to the performance even though some ppl think that makes him look uncontrolled. It also helps that he is just so damn adorable. That face >.< Yuzuru doesn't really remind of Johnny that much. For me the only resemblance is the body type. To me he seems more like a male version of Mao but with better jump technique. If he ever outgrows his asthma, the other guys better watch out.

Actually now that I think about it, I don't really think his asthma is that much of a problem for him. Did anyone else notice that after his FS at CoR he didn't look that tired? I think it might be more stamina now considering he really likes to perform all out with his whole entire body but at Russia when he toned it down he had no problem getting through his program except for the weird fall on the footwork.

Yuzuru has been one of my faves for a while now, and I've been meaning to make a thread for him 'cause this forum needs one, but you beat me to it! But it's all good.

Here's my basic analysis of him:

He keeps being compared to Johnny Weir, and it's a valid comparison. Weir designs some of his costumes, Yuzuru admires Weir, and you can see some of Weir's grace and smoothness in Yuzuru's skating. However, Yuzuru's boldness and bravado is totally different from Weir (at least when Johnny started out, where he was often described as deer in the headlights/introverted). That aspect of Yuzuru reminds me a lot more of Plushenko. A skater that combines both Plushenko and Weir, how can you go wrong with that? He is still very much his own skater, though. As someone who grew up under the COP, unlike Weir or Plushenko, Yuzuru naturally takes to the intricacies, the inventive footwork and entrances that the COP requires (check out his twizzles in a sit position). Without a doubt, Yuzuru has Star Quality.

Technically, Yuzuru is incredibly strong. He's gotten his quad and triple axel so consistent he's doing them in exhibitions. Not only that, but he does a quad/triple axel sequence in exhibitions! It's an insanely difficult jump element that, due to the sequence point markdown, would be a very bad idea in competition. It does work, however, as proof of his technical prowess. Having the two jumps with the highest points nailed down goes a long way to keep Yuzuru in contention in any competition.

He does have weaknesses, though. It's hard to ignore that stamina is a problem for him, although it seems to be improving. This season, if he had just landed that last triple salchow in Cup of China instead of popping it into a double, he'd have won the competition instead of being in 4th. I am not exactly sure how bad his asthma is or how it affects his training. But as someone who has been hospitalized for asthma a few times, I feel his pain. It may or may not be something he can overcome totally. He will need to to be consistently competitive.

Yuzuru also lists Plushenko as his idol along with Weir. He's got the best of both worlds I worry about his technically ability when he gets older though. Weir was doing beautiful 3A that covered a lot of ice too when he was young but as he got older they started to look blah IMO.

yeah i agree, he was so close to winning CoC....the first half of his FS was just WOW, then it went downhill when he fell. He seriously needs to pick himself up faster after falling, like PChan. He scored the highest in TES for CoR, even higher than Javier, who successfully landed both his quads.

I think Yuzu has a great future in figure skating. I thing he has everthing, but he has to improve in his lines and interpretation. He is such a talent. He jumps, he spins and his transitions are very good. He will grow up and become a BIG CHAMPION.

It also absolutely blows my mind that Yuzuru's doing so well this season, considering that he's from Sendai (i.e. the major city the most heavily affected by the earthquake/tsunami back in March) and the resulting emotional trauma (in addition to the lost training time) that must have caused. That, in addition to the fact that he kind of looks like my younger brother, makes me teary-eyed whenever I see him skate even half decently.

Keep in mind that, while he doesn't seem it, Yuzuru is already two inches taller than two of the leading Japanese men (Daisuke and Nobunari) and the same height as Takahiko. (Strange, isn't it? I guess the charisma Daisuke exudes on ice makes him look bigger?) Hopefully this means that he won't be doing much more growing.

In general, though, I don't think growth spurts are *as* much of a problem for men's skaters, since they don't have the problem (at least in terms of the physics of rotating jumps) of getting curvy when they hit puberty, and instead gain mass more so in muscle, which helps.

Slim to none. Check out some of Yuzuru's older performances on Youtube (e.g. his final junior season, 2009-10) and you'll see that he's already had a major growth spurt, and not only did his 3A survive it, he's since added a quad as well - and he's still doing his Beillmann. He is just a special talent. It stood out for me the first time I saw him, when he was the youngest men's competitor at 2009 Junior Worlds (I still maintain he wuzrobbed on PCS) and it's clear now as well. Really at this point it's about conditioning, maturity, and control.

As for similarities to Weir and Plushenko, I think you can see the influence of both in Yuzuru's skating - the best of both, really. Whether he can have a Plushenko-like career, who knows? His mental strength seems impressive - after everything he's been through with the earthquake and its aftermath (he was on the ice when it hit), to be able to have such a good season is a very encouraging sign as far as his future prospects go.

I really hope to have the chance to see him skate live at some point. A friend of mine was at 2010 JW and really enjoyed his skating.

I think he has the potential making of the perfect skater, balance of the Yin and Yang, the amalgamation of opposites spectrum of men's figure skating: Johnny (artistry, sensitivity, smoothness and finesse) and Plushy (Unapologetic technical overlord!) May be being young and somewhat of an innocent, this type of boyish charming androgynous type of skating is very attractive to me (I am not sure if that makes sense) but he remind me a character straight out of the Japanese Manga F4 boys from Hana Yori Dango, except he is the sweet one all the girls can relate to and have a crush on (Especially with his Winnie the Pooh bear lucky charm ... lol!). I wouldn't be surprised if he start to become a pin up back in Japan by next year (if he isn't already)

I do think he offers something new, unique and quite refreshing among the current men's.

Maybe something to do with age and personality perhaps? Hanyu is one of the more emotional available mens skater right now (I hope that won't change when he gets older), there's compassion and venerability that shows up on his Romeo and Juliet programs which I love. He clearly feels the music, the mood changes and he is clear in what he is trying to express in tuned with the many variations of music beyond merely executing the required elements. Overall, very good intrinsic understanding of musicality, movement and performing to the audience (although the latter could be improved upon further with greater maturity).

The thing I appreciate the most is Hanyu hardly ever dumb down his program in an almost naive and optimistic way. Given the type of crazy difficult content he has, his personal situations (asthma and stamina issues) he appears to be refreshingly uncalculated and his natural demeanour is going for broke 100% of the time. And if he is on fire, you might get 110% performance out of him as if is the last performance he will ever give.

He rarely ever hesitate before his big elements, and I am always surprised to see how a major fall would really appear to shook him up as if he couldn't believe it (and refuse to believe it), only to find him coming back with an even bigger jump to prove and reassures himself. May be there's some Samurai spirit in this young one!

Amazing talent aside, it makes him an exciting and somewhat unpredictable skater to root for because the chances are, with these amount of crazy difficulties he want to include his programs at his age (with all his asthma and stamina issues) the chances of him going clean is slim, yet you know he is always going for his very best instead of following some sort of calculated risks like the older skaters tends to do. (Especially amongst the ladies field right now)

Keep in mind that, while he doesn't seem it, Yuzuru is already two inches taller than two of the leading Japanese men (Daisuke and Nobunari) and the same height as Takahiko. (Strange, isn't it? I guess the charisma Daisuke exudes on ice makes him look bigger?) Hopefully this means that he won't be doing much more growing.

In general, though, I don't think growth spurts are *as* much of a problem for men's skaters, since they don't have the problem (at least in terms of the physics of rotating jumps) of getting curvy when they hit puberty, and instead gain mass more so in muscle, which helps.

But of course there is the possibility that Yuzuru will still grow taller. I think gaining muscle mass will only to be his benefit.

I love the soundtrack to that Drama, perhaps he can make a program out of it! I'm sure his costume would be fabulous since the clothes the F4 wear are super chic and high end. Holy crap, I just thought of something. Hanyu, Takahashi, Oda and Kozuka should perform an exhibition number to Hana Yori Dango and Mao can play Makino. That would be awesome!
