FD: Bolero, choreo by Benoit Richaud

I love this team! And I'm tired of hearing that certain teams from *decades* ago "own" any music. T & D used this old classical piece of music 42 years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing how Z/K will utilize Bolero. They are such exciting ice dancers.

Of course, anyone can choose whichever music that inspires them. I do not think anyone feels, by this stage, that Bolero is somehow sacrosanct simply because it was executed in iconic fashion by Dame Jayne Torvill and Sir Christopher Dean at the Olympics in 1984. So many skaters have, after a number of years passed by, tried to tackle this music in a variety of unique ways, including Savchenko/ Szolkowy, Michelle Kwan, Carolina Kostner, Shoma Uno, and most recently, Kevin Aymoz. It's the music itself that I do not really find I can get into that easily, due to its repetitiveness, and despite how it steadily builds. Of course, the striking repetitiveness is the challenge for those who take it on.

I'm not excited for Bolero for Z/K, but obviously they are, and they trust Benoit. I do not think Benoit did a good job with the fp for Hase/Volodin last season. He was more successful with Z/K's Romeo & Juliet FD, clearly inspired by the approach Kaitlyn Weaver took for Flores/ Desyatov's 2023-24 West Side Story FD (a lot of teams and choreographers have been inspired by Weaver's creative work for Flores/ Desyatov). Benoit even copped the unique 'falling forward' opening move Weaver created for Flores/ Desyatov's Poor Things FD to use in the middle of Z/K's Romeo & Juliet FD.

So, we'll see what ideas Benoit is cooking up for Bolero. It's bound to be hit or miss...
