Canadian Ladies: Where do they go from here?

Any updates out of minto or Alberta on the ladies? No video of osmond on the live streaming. Sequin seems to have done ok. Chartrand seems to be struggling

Seguin had the highest total score (134.64, 82.49 FS) of the ladies who competed junior at Minto. Her FS was nearly clean, with a 3Z combo, 3F, 3Lo, 3t+2T, 3S, 3T and 2A. If she skates as well at Courchevel, she could be in contention for a medal.

Chartrand had the third highest junior score at Minto (110.90, 73.25 FS), but really struggled in the FS. She led off with 3Z, 3F, 3Lo, but fell on a downgraded second lutz, fell on a 3T, and fell on a downgraded 3Lo. The competition at Lake Placid is a bit tougher than Courchevel's, so Chartrand needs to work on her stamina if she is to have a good showing there.

I notice sequin missing a lot of levels on spins. Perhaps she and coach need to review or get feedback

No info online about wildrose. No results or live stream for junior or senior ladies

SC has Daleman posted for JGP in Austria. Good to see they are sending the younger ones. Hopefully she will up her scores at Thornhill from Detroit

Yes, Daleman will have to up the ante from 109.43 to finish well at the Linz JGP.

Last year, the range of lowest JGP scores for each finish position:

3rd: 141.84-153.84 average 146.73
6th: 123.20-133.33 average 130.52
10th: 106.90-120.27 average 114.83

Oh, I like the blonde and wearing it up gives her a more classy refined look. I sure do hope she gets those toe jumps licked.

I am not a fan of Lacoste. Watching the performance, I think the judges gave very high PCS marks for a so-so performance. She didn't even rotate her best jump - 3 loop.

After the first few comps of the season, Osmond seems to have improved drastically - technically and performance.

Will be interesting in a couple of months to see how these two skaters progress and go head to head at skate Canada GP.

I do think that Osmond is the favourite to win Canadians this year.

Phaneuf has her injury issues and Lacoste seems completely unable to land a toe jump at the moment. Lacoste often pops her lutz and flip into singles and does not attempt the toe loop at all. If Osmond is at her best she'll beat the Najarro/Descantis/Charbonneau easily as well.

Unlike Dragonlady, I think that Osmond should be on the senior circuit because it is very likely she'll be our representative at worlds. As well SC must ramp up the international assignments for the younger skaters (JGPs and perhaps other lesser junior and novice events as well ). Last year was a completely lost year for development ( sending Najarro on the JGP last year given her multiple failures internationally was a joke ). A skater like Daleman would have used the opportunity better.

SC must focus more on the ones Osmond's age and younger as those that are older are not going anywhere.

I completely agree with you Nadster.
Osmond appears to be our most immediate hope for future developement, and there are a few other hopeful bright lights as well. Julianne Seguin blew the doors off Minto Summerskate last week (6 triples incl Lutz and really outstanding performance skills). SC needs to give the younger girls some experience. We are simply spinning our wheels with the seniors we have now.

The schedule for Thornhill is up, and there are no more Free Skate Finals.
Thornhill was the one Canadian summer event where the top ladies in each group competed against one another. IMO, this dims the future for Canadian ladies.

Thanks for posting the link to Sandrine Martin. She did well at Liberty earlier in the season, so I was looking forward to seeing her skating here.

With her good skate at Liberty and then here she may have done enough to get a JGP assignment. IMO she's not yet as strong a skater overall as the three skaters that have been assigned to the JGP (Julianne Seguin, Gabrielle Daleman and Alaine Chartrand) but she is certainly promising.

It's too bad that Julianne Seguin had a bit of a downturn here and couldn't duplicate her Minto skate. Hopefully she got the errors out of her system and will skate a cleaner long program at the JGP in France.

Sandrine will have to wait until Seguin skates at least before she can get a JGP assignment. Canada has only 6 slots and I am sure won't deny any of the skaters with assignments second slots if they do well in their first assignment. IOW Sandrine will get a JGP only if any of the others fail at their JGP assignments.

Many Canadian skaters cross the border to compete in Skate Detroit and Liberty, where there are very competitive final rounds. Hopefully, these skaters will continue to push themselves by seeking out challenging competitive environments. It is certainly to their benefit!

That is a very valid point, just wondering. Skaters should seek the competition instead of hoping for competition at a certain event. Regardless of final rounds or not, competitive skaters compete against the entire group, whether or not they are divided into 10 groups. There is alot of score matching at these events. They may not be on the same warmup ice, but competitive kids want to have the highest scores regardless of 1 group or 20.

Skaters have to branch out to competitions other than just regional, ie Quebec, Wildrose, BC. These competitions usually attract the same skaters every year. Some skaters may branch off to the neighboring province, but that is it until Sectionals. For the majority of skaters, Challenge is the first "travelling" competition of the year. Exposure to other competitions, adapting to travel, adapting to meals changing, etc are all part of development and succeeding.

Agreed. I had thought of putting a similar comment in my post, but didn't want to pre-judge how well the three assigned skaters would actually do in international competition. All three of them are still fairly inconsistent, and it's probably completely unpredictable how they will deal with nerves in that situation. However, in all three cases if they skate up to their capabilities they can do well enough to justify a second assignment IMO.

Results from Thornhill and BC Summerskate will be interesting too. I don't expect anything that will shake up the assignments for the last three spots, but it's always possible that someone will surprise us with an outstanding skate.

In all candor, I am dumbfounded that in spite of all the effort, talent and frankly FINANCIAL support that Skate Canada has provided over the past years ahead of Vancouver and into the present, that more has not come from it. Such a love for the sport which is fantastic, with fan support as well. It does not "compute" for me.

It's back to the drawing board probably. I don't think Joannie will come back but one can hope for the sake of Canada being competitive at the olympics (team). they need Joannie back and fast!
