The Judging Controversy Thread

Because Russian Federation dumped Yulia after her disastrous SP. But she was kept close enough for the podium just in case. In any case, had she not fallen in SP she might have been on the podium next to Adelina.

Agreed....they did get lucky in the fact that Adelina skated as well as she did both skates.

Leaving room? This isn't 6.0.

Wow 100,000 signatures on the petition now. Eventually this gets into the millions the IOC and/or ISU will have to do an investigation like 2002.

Sounds like you guy are voting for the American Idol!!! Do you think that anyone in their right mind would believe there are 100,000 people watching figure skating, to have cared enough about the scoring system in figure skating to sign a petition. Where is this so called petition? OH MY

I can't imagine what would've happened if Adelina also fell. I'm guessing she would've still made the podium. Really, she just barely gave a clean enough performance that the judges probably felt they could get away with it.

Agreed SnowflakeBeautiful.

I think it's ironic that Gracie couldn't clear 130 in the team event with a clean skate but managed 136 in the individual with a fall.

People didn't see this because Gracie is not Russian!!! I think what's good for the goose is good for the gander. People gave double standards.

Valid point! But it wasn't the same Russian "favorite" who won...

Who cares. For all we know it was. Team Gold for Julia, singles gold for Sotnikova, and lookie she was out 2nd Russian as we didnt even use her in the Team event so the result wasnt fixed (lol). Either way Russia payed millions for that ladies gold and their other figure skating golds, and when Julia fell before Adelina ever skated they had to go to plan B which was the same thing but with a new skater so easy switch to make.

Even Ashley is calling for a change...

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ashley...ing--gypped--by-olympic-judges-205146099.html

(Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, hard to keep up with every single page!)

I hate to say this because I like Ashley well enough, but it's not really a shocker that she is. She skated clean performances and the heat has been on her to prove she was worthy of making the U.S. team.... She did well, but not well-enough that some people won't still be in an upraor that she made it.

I think it'd be more interesting if say Yuna or Mao or even Carolina were making these types of statements.

Agreed. Screw anonymous judging.

And how about banning suspended judges from the judging panel? Especially for big events like the Olympics or Worlds.

Also, they should integrate the aspect of independence - no close relatives/connections of national Federations should be on the panel too.

Yes!!!!

This should be added to the petition, or a new one created.
The panel should NOT have any close relatives of those who are in positions of power in national Federations.
And no previously SUSPENDED judges should be on future panels! Duh!!!!

How can we make these changes happen?
They seem to be in effect in all other areas of life. For example, if there are sweepstakes offered by a company,
any employees or RELATIVES are not allowed. What can we do to change this sport and take away anonymous judging?

And everyone kind of knows she's only out for herself..

Yea I mean, I almost expected this out of Ashley. She could be using it as a way to let other skaters know it's ok to make these type of statements because I don't see Yuna or Carolina offering any remarks even if they have the same conviction. Both Yuna and Carolina are so classy (not saying Ashley isn't) that I would be surprised if they did contribute to the conversation. They both deserve to enjoy their medal for the night and handle the rest in the next few days.

Yet the tech panel gave higher levels to Adelina so that she can score higher total. How wonderful is that?

The GOE sheet you showed was from the SP, and those are not the responsibility of the technical panel... so bringing tech panel into this particular point is not relevant.

My recollection, although I admit it may be faulty, was that no Russian judge (the ones who awarded GOE) was on the SP panel, nor were any of it's former satellite republics...

The scoresheet tends to reflect that, overall, a consistent opinion that Sotnikova performed her elements in the SP better than Yuna. Note: Consistent... this isn't a case of a rogue judge doing something outlandish. Again... this is from a largely Western panel (if my memory is correct).

Who knows, maybe what you're saying holds some truth? (Crazier things have happened.) However, the fact that you can't discuss it in a way that isn't absolutely rude to the skater at hand leaves your comments feeling too biassed to be taken too seriously.

This is a good point. SP judging panel had no EE judges whatsoever. And they still put Adelina tied with both Kim and Carolina. I think had the judges were the same we would have the same outcome but much tighter scoring.

Absolutely and completely agree. :) Ashley's face and mouth say a lot of things that sometimes would do her better if they didn't. ;)
Not saying she can't be upset....I just feel like it's expected from her - so it doesn't have the same effect it would if it were someone else.

Meh. This is all running against the wind. Medals have been bought and bargained for forever. There will never be another microscope on the judging as happened in SLC because of the skating federations/associations themselves. That scandal was nothing but bad for the sport of figure skating in terms of skating club registrations and major network money, at least in NA, and that's all they care about. It put this sport under scrutiny to the people that matter...the parents of the kids who might pump money into the coaches' coffers, and the sponsors who want to back a winning horse. They ran like rats from a sinking ship that year, and because of that, it will never happen again. Russia's got their Ice Princess and it could be that in 4 years no one will remember her name. I had been an avid skating fan for decades, and nothing made me more jaded or less invested in wins than having my own child involved at a competitive level. Even at the most juvenile level, the lesser able skaters of coaches with a higher profile (and of course a greater fee) would be given the green light, proving that the more economically advantaged have every
advantage no matter their ability. I still love watching skating, because I love to see that program and that skater that just sings to your heart, but how the medals land doesn't matter to me any longer. The politicking is exhausting, and the true sadness is the amount of very talented and potentially fantastic skaters who you will never see.

And everyone kind of knows she's only out for herself..

I agree..... At the very least, she has definitely been made out to be that way (my generous side speaking). She may be a perfectly lovely girl. However, the pressure has been on her; and this certainly has given her a way to shift blame

Adelina Sotnikova was fated to win

I think people should give the conspiracy theories a rest. We should know by now when it comes to the Olympics fate always come into play. There were just too many coincidences....

Mao bombed her short
The competition was in Russia
A lot of the top competitors fell out of contention with mistakes
And the biggest one... this girl had the performances of her life in the right place at the right time... after having a history of inconsistency.

It was simply meant to be..... just like Sarah was meant to be, just like Tara was was meant to be, just like Arakawa was meant to be.. Everyone should be used to this at the Olympics. Nothing trumps fate. These things are ordained by something higher. Expect no different in the next Olympics. She will more than likely retire now as there is no way the stars will align like that for her again.

Technical panels decision was a separate (but connected) issue. I didn't suggest that tech panel is somehow responsible for GOEs.
