.... much easier to check on their music usage and are aware of how much easier it is now for people to download/get it for free which impacts their income.
I would imagine that besides money there is also the issue of chopping up the artist's original creation and destroying its musical merit, to squeeze it into 3 and a half minutes come hell or high water.
When Ray Charles recorded "Tell me what I say" Atlantic Records told him that he would have to leave out half of it so it would fit on a 45 rpm disc. Charles was adamant: The song is 7 minutes long, end of discussion. They released it on two sides of a standard 45, 7 minutes in all.
They also told him to jazz down some of the lyrics. You can't say, "Look at the girl with the diamond ring. She knows how to shake that thing" without risking arrest at some of the stops on tour.
Well, what’s a thread without veering slightly off topic:
Donovan Carrillo’s 2022 Ray Charles SP, including a snippet of “What’d I Say”. Which record companies also were afraid of due to the very suggestive mmm, oohhhh, mmm, oooh. That overt orgasm mimicking was rare back in the day .
