2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

Oh for the love of...!!!

I don't understand all the hate for Adelina, stop it!!

All this controversy is not her own personal fault.

+1,000,000 what is she supposed to do? Bribe the judges to NOT put her first???

Probably.

I wasn't really an Adelina fan before the Olympics but ironically I am a fan now. It has nothing to do with her winning either.

She was overshadowed by Julia and didn't let that phase her. She came out and delivered far more than anyone expected (well those who hadn't forgotten about her).

This. I still don't think she deserved to win, but I give her props for shining through...and to do it on home ice, with all that added pressure, when she couldn't do it elsewhere? Major props to her.

Did the gold medalist really get tangled in her own GALA show?? Haha what an idiot the reigning olympic womens figure skating champion cant even do a gala right lol bet the judges gave her a 150 for that

This is really unnecessary. Also, it's a gala, no one cares - there is no "right" way to do one and she doesn't owe you anything.

Agreed. I've always liked Adelina and wished for her to deliver two great skates, especially after being largely ignored by her own federation in favor of Yulia.
That said, I wish they had found a way to properly reward her without making a mockery of other skaters' efforts and the judging system in the process.

I agree.

I can quite happily accept her win, had it been a considerably narrower victory. I think the judges have done Adelina more harm than good.

She skated great and should be proud, but thanks to decisions that were not her fault... somehow many people expect her to feel ashamed?

That's not fair either.

Not fair, for sure, because really, she skated fantastically and rose to the occasion. Maybe it's a little off-putting, though, that she's saying to the media that she's won gold because she was better than Yuna. I personally wouldn't have said something like that.

Adelina from my understanding said I won because I was better in technique. harder combinations more jumps. She didn't say I'm a better skater ,but she's saying look I did more technically.

I don't blame her for saying this because folks are asking her to defend her win, and she did do more technically than Yu-na. Its not like Adelina fell 4 times and was put ahead by PCS.

Even Kostner the main advantage she had was TES.

Yet another troll account. It is repeated ad nauseum that PCS cannot suddenly rise, it is IMPOSSIBLE to rise at this rate, etc. you people even made graphs to show how S's PCS has risen! OF COURSE PCS has risen at this rate and even faster for younger skaters, eg. Hanyu. This is what I mean by your PCS nonsense. PCS *CAN* and *DO* rise at this rate. You don't agree with S's PCS rise, that is merely a SUBJECTIVE FEELING of yours. OBJECTIVELY, there's nothing controversial about this rate of PCS increase!

Sotnikova skated much, much better at Sochi than at Euro 2014. A +7 increase in PCS isn't outrageous, especially in the context of +14 for Hanyu.
No it is not subjective, it is based on the ISU's official criteria for component scores, and Adelina's crude skating abilities.

Thank you for the reply, sk8in. I think your thoughts preclude a debate that will probably accompany the next four years of figure skating: Performance vs. Presentation. Yuna Kim undoubtedly has a mature, refined, exquisite style of skating that is inimitable and worlds away from Sotinikova at physical capabilities at the moment. However, in my eyes Adelina exemplified a different kind of artistry: she skated with a gusto and charisma (befitting of her music) that not only resonated in the building, but through my television here in the U.S. That, in addition to the rapturous support of the home crowd, created a genuine moment, as opposed it Yuna's casually professional, routine skate.

Quantifying artistry in skating will always be a tricky thing, since art of any medium is wholly subjective. Individual taste varies wildly, and disagreements will always be had regarding "quality". I actually think this is a wonderful thing, as it provides the foundation for thoughtful discussion, and merely declaring one skater's style of skating as "right" or "superior" to another's is rather myopic.

All in all, taking into account Yuna's lesser technical content and sterile emotionalism, I'm absolutely fine with Adelina's high-spiritedness and superior technical content winning on the night.

By artistry it also means flow on the ice, clean landing, good foot work, moving with the music and the tempo and making smooth transitions. It's not subjective. And how do you justify christian when Yuna received very similar scores in the sp to Adelina. Yuna had a more difficult sp than anyone.

Adelina doesn't flow on the ice like Mao, Yuna and Carolina. She skates rigidly across the ice with awkward entrance into jumps and stiff landings. She also flutzes and yes, there was that stumble. There's also long entrance into jumps-she telegraphs.

She deserved bronze only because Mao had a disaster sp.

Where did she say that? And I mean that she was better than Yuna, because I read too whyt bekalc said and that wasn't what you wrote here.
The main thing I saw her repeating in interviews over and over was that she skated very well. And a.) that's true, b.) she's allowed to be proud of it and say it herself, c.) she NEEDS to be confident baout that to stand all the hate she's getting and d.) that's not being disrespectful towards any other skater or an attempt of judging herself.

And I thought you (=pangtongfan) were becoming sufferable, this is a 17 year old girl, this is horribly cruel.

Where did you get that impression from?
PTF is the same as always, even said he/she thinks Adelina is personally to blame for the bad judging too! It doesn't get worse then that. The upside: Adelina said being left of the team event was what gave her the main motivation, that she'd show all the doubters and try her all to get on that podium. If doubt and hate make her stronger, it might make her a better competitor next season. It would be funny if she dominated the next seasons and we could see PTF exploding or bursting from all the hate

Btw, your ava is the most beautiful thing! Mao's LP was the moment of the Olympics for me, and I'm still not over it. I'm more angered with Mao getting robbed of her rightful 4th place finish and her LP win than the overall medal scandal. And when Mao smiled afterwards and said she was satisfied with herself, I couldn't help but feel all happy too.

Even if Mao had two triple axels that night she would have scored lower than Miss Sotnikova. LOL. Mao should have received the 149.95 not Adelina. It was absolutely insane. Julia's mop ups and infantile artistry got her those high marks, LOL. Figure skating is a complete joke.

That kind of argument never makes sense. Like that you'd even have to say all of them only deserve any medals to begin with because there is no Mao-Yuna hybrid who's flawless in everything, or Hanyu didn't capitalize on his looks yet to simply skate disguised as a girl. Yes, those things don't exist, but you deserve a medal because nobody else did better than you on that certain day. With an argument like that, holy cow would a big fat number of medals in any sport be undeserved!

Additionally, you could even say Yuna and Carolina only deserved their medals because Mao had a disastrous SP.

I might have agreed with the rest before that, but nope, that's classless.

If figure skating is such a joke, stop watching.

Look here, I like Mao and she had a wonderful lp I thought she should have won the free skate that night. However, a fall and a missed combination does not add up to a medal finish here.

Even Kostner the main advantage she had was TES.

Yep, because Caro actually scored lower on PCS than Adelina. That seem right to you?

Adelina had more jumps, but got uncalled on wrong edge and UR. Planning to do more technically and doing them incorrectly does not constitute actually doing more technically, I think. And Yuna did more technically in SP -- at least her BV had higher value, but still she received much lower GOEs in SP.

And the media that seem to say nothing was wrong with judging, that Adelina won on TES, just assume that technical score is something that is given objectively, as if Adelina got all 3 GOEs are completely deserved when no one else got that much 3 GOEs.

Look, Adelina was fantastic. I don't mean to say she doesn't deserve her gold. Like I said, everyone rocked, and they all deserved the gold, and the fact that she's young and skated her best ever at the home Olympics alone should grant her the gold.

That doesn't mean the scores she got was anywhere correct or others were fairly judged. And this whole spin about Adelina winning based on TES alone is a total BS. I wish they would stop perpetuating that.
