2014 Worlds - Ladies Short Program

I'm newbie - do I understand scoring system correctly if I say: Kanako MURAKAMI performed better(cleaner) than Anna POGORILAYA, but had an easier program?

Gold and Wagner are still getting the same PCS

I hope Wagner either gets a solid 3-3 next season

Or just gives up that **** and start choreographing SPs that start with a 2a and have the combination and a triple in the 2nd half

She even got a level 4 on her STSQ ! If she did a good 3f-2t she would have made at least 3 more points which would have brought her to the final group

After watching the entire SP event on a constantly freezing, mammary-obsessed feed, I've just now checked to see that Eurosport live feed for my laptop is only 3,99 euros per month. :bang:

At least I noticed now not at the end of the whole competition

 Do tell: what is a "mammary-obsessed" feed?

(I'm always slow on the uptake but it's even worse today b/c am running on about 2 hrs sleep!)

I'm in love with Mao's loop combinaton. It's amazing, the way she can keep the flow through it. Gentlemen take note. If you can't pull off this springy quality, stick to the toe-loop as second jump.

I think one of the pop ups they called Ana has cleavage that haunts you the entire time you watch that particular feed. I was free and clear but frightened none the less that it could happen to me. They kept telling me my phone would ring and it would be Ana.

Kostner has bad skating order again, judge might held her score for other skaters like in olympic

So what exactly does +1.24 Kanako's advantage in PCS over Anna mean?

Higher pcs means judge found Kanako more impressive than Anna in the average of five aspects of program components: skating skills, transition, execution, choreography and interpretation.

Nothing, because she lost on TES not on PCS.
I know that she lost on TES, I'm asking what does it mean that one skater (Kanako) had higher PCS score than other skater (Anna Pogo)?
Doesn't it mean (theoretically) that she skated better(cleaner)?

See the response above.

I still can't get over it

2 Short programs

A month apart

23 points a difference

But whatever, So grateful for Mao :)

It's amazing how some people allow themselves to be defensive about Russian skaters a month after what happened in Sochi,

Not to mention with the scores Kovtun and Lips got here,

Delusional a bit ?

cant blame gymers
there are many bots here

some people are still whining about Julia's scores even in Saitama

Ah, so...thanks, S-S! I stuck w/ the Russian feed; unfortunately, couldn't make Eurosport work (am also tech-challenged) but will try again tonight. However, IIRC, the Russian feed has its own "Ana." Plus a couple of her friends.

Thanks so much again to everyone who provided links. My cable company's rates border on extortion, so I had resigned myself to watching after-the-fact on YouTube or NBC 2 weeks later. (Grrrrr....) Now, because of all you nice folks, I'll be sleep-deprived but very happy for the next few days. :party2:

It was especially great to see Mao's skate as it happened. So happy for her I got all weepy! :points:

My miscellaneous thoughts:

Congrats to Mao. That was her best 3A she's done in years - by far. It may even be more solid than her Oly 2010. I just hope she doesn't get too confident and chooses to try a 3A combo in the free. Go clean Mao, go clean! Even her 3Lo+2Lo combo looked effortless with great flow when normally the finally 2Lo looks labored. I thought her PCS was a tad low. In my estimation, every component should have been a tad higher - I'd say a 36 to 36.25 would have been more appropriate here. But it might be deluding myself a bit since I'm so happy Mao did so well, especially after the Sochi disaster, so I might be over-scoring her here.

Nice for Kostner also. Everyone always praises her Bolero, which I guess is alright, but her Olympics rendition was especially uninspiring with its watered down choreography and face mugging. It's this SP that shows her at her best. It's lovely and she seems so calm and controlled. Normally in the LP she begins to lose stamina towards the second half and jumps and spins get much more labored and inelegant, in the SP she doesn't have to worry about that and she can just go out give her best. She deserves second, but she was over-scored in my view, especially on her mediocre spins which deserves +0 and +1s in GOE. Judge 3 in her protocol was the only one that knows how to award GOE.

As for Yulia, wonderful. I've never been a Yulia lover, aside from her spins. I thought she had potential to grow into a wonderful skater, but this SP might just have put me in the fan category (despite not really being a fan of the SP itself … if that makes sense). From the angle I saw, which I'll admit was not the best, I don't think she flutzed. It looked like she almost did, by which I mean it seemed she was just about to move to the inside, but she got into the air before. I'm normally pretty hard on this and thought the calls have been lenient for her recently, but it looked like a she did it right finally. If it wasn't (and, again, I emphasize my poor angle and would be happy if anyone could link to a decent angle where you can see it clearly) than it was borderline enough that I think she can have it fixed entirely by next season. But, even more generally about her jumps, they were uniformally better. Her jumps were bigger, aside from the 2A which was still a bit low, but her flow was so much better in-and-out. And her spins were gorgeous - even better than usual (no traveling, great speed!). While, obviously, her interpretative skills and performance abilities need improvement, over the last three competition her carriage has really improved (go back and watch skate canada if you have doubts). Her PCS was probably a tad high, but I thought most of the women below her deserved quite a bit lower than her so I'm not too worried about it. Richly deserved 3rd place (though I'd personally have her closer to Kostner). It will be interesting to see what happens next season. If her body maintains like Sasha Cohen's, she could be something really special in the next year or two.

Gracie's scored seemed appropriate relative to the rest of the field. I enjoyed it, but it's nothing remarkable for me. Part of the issue is packaging, it seems kind -of generic, but she has really improved since switching to Frank. One of her problems is she just has no singular factor that distinguishes her from the field. Kostner has her expressiveness, Yulia has her spins etc. She just has a big 3Lz+3T, but sometimes it's "too big" and tends to go off axis and the 3T is often eked out awkwardly. Maybe if this was 2008/2009 world championships when a 3Lz + 3T might have been more impressive, but not here.

Akiko was good, but nothing inspiring. I hope she does a repeat of Japanese nationals. I'd just loved to see both Mao and Akiko go clean and great in their FS's.

There's something inexplicably I like about Meite, even though I can't say I find anything about her skating especially great. It's just something about her. I think she was scored right, but I think I just enjoy her energy.

And can somebody tell Wagner to just do a solid 3F+2T and go for positive GOE!
