Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

If someone was touched by french mood commentators on the video that showed commentator's reaction when Hanyu set a new world record, I give you Hanyu's FS 2012 at Nice WC : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_lYMOcTfQ. It has already been posted on the media topic,, that's why I allow me to put the video but with the french comments

Here the translation.

Before, more precision : Nelson Montfort, a well known sport commentator in the game since 90's, especially for figure skating and athletism. The woman is Annick Dumond, a figure skating coach, she trained Brian Joubert, Florent Amodio ... She adds technical point of view when skaters were performing. And the other guy is Philippe Candeloro, retired french skater very popular in France and Japan (i'm sure you know him). Since 2000, they comment skating competition together.

Nelson Montfort (NM) Philippe Candeloro (PC) Annick Dumont (AD)

NM: What a great afternoon, because what we are watching and will watch later in 20 minutes seems crazy, there is a real chance of medal (bronze or silver) for one or two French skaters. That won’t be easy but it is possible. Now Yuzuru Hanyu, young Japanese contender, who eliminated Oda at Japan Championship, slightly disappointing yesterday (in the short program), but is capable of doing his best this afternoon.

PC: So, will he is going to stay as gentle as a lamb? (It is a French idiom. PC loves doing jokes because lamb=agneau in French and the pronunciation of “agneau” is almost the same for “Hanyu”). We are going to discover that (as gentle as a lamb) now … he has a lot of quality and so, look at this quad toe … it works.

AD: Wow … Ohlalalalala, wow!!!

PC: We are on the fifth quad of the afternoon … (1:19) here the triple axel, with a preparation out of the ordinary, it is a strong start … (1:33) triple flip, so that’s it over, now we’re going to the next.

NM: Let’s notice that this contender is seventh behind our French skater Florent Amodio after the short program. Amodio has succeeded to integrate the last group (concerning the order of the passage). It changes all but, waiting a moment because, here, regarding what happened yesterevening, we may approach on a potential podium or a fourth place, he (Hanyu) is very dangerous for Florent. (It is normal that French commentators support French skater and believe him ;)).

(2:15) PC: Wow triple flip, look at the flexion work.

AD: Oh …What a … what a will … what a will to hold this jump.

PC: And normally, this jump would be fall to the ground.

AD: Of course, he absolutely didn’t have the body on his backing.

NM: How did he succeeded to stay up … I hope we will see the slow motion.

AD: It is just a will.

NM: It challenges the gravity … I really hope we’ll see the slow motion …. oh, and so a lot of …

(2:55) AD: No!!! This is unbelievable …

NM: What happened Philippe...

AD: He is getting into his tip…

PC: Yes, yes, he toppled on the tip.

AD: … it is a novice mistake …

PC: It is not grave, but it costs 1 point…

(3:09) AD: … Oh triple axel, triple axel …. Ohlalala triple toe loop, he is fantastic this skater.

PC: I said yesterday, I make few galas with him in Japan last July, he was very impressive. (3:24) here triple lutz, double toe, following by another double toe … (3:48) perfect triple loop, it is an almost perfect program.

NM: Despite his novice fault, oh … what a pity, I hope we will see that …

AD: I think even him he could not believe it.

PC: I think he is injured on his hand, because of the way that he looked his hand when he lifted up after the fall. What was fabulous, it was the triple axel just after the fall … So now, we are seeing his small steps, very swift …. (4:25) and supported by the crowd, especially Japanese, there are many of them this afternoon at Nice's Palais des Expositions … (4:47) he is light so he can hold the program a little bit longer but we are feeling from him tiredness.

(4:57) AD: Ohlala, he gave all what he was able to do, he cannot do anymore

(5:10) PC: here with twirls out of nowhere, rare on the men’s category.

AD: It is wonderful, this is a sporting feat. Oh he can be happy, I think he has no energy anymore, such he pushed himself to the limit. I have the impression that he is injured … but this fall that no one expected, even himself … he is exhausted.

PC: think his hand his injured.

AD: I don’t know if it is his hand, or ankle … I don’t know.

PC: Look at how he is sweating, we have never seen that for any skater this afternoon.

AD: He gave the best of himself, even beyond that. He will may collapse before leaving the ice rink…. So many Japanese in this rink
Then Annick Dumond sum up the jumps that he did (she admires the quad toe, and she said that it deserves 2 more points, same for Axel) and she stressed the fall, that it is a novice mistake, and in skating school, we explain that we must pay attention to the tips because there are big tips on the front of the blade and we always could verify to not attach it into the ice.

Then the slow motion was coming, they expected the triple flip motion but it was not display. She underlined the fact that he makes his triple axel with a front spiral, like a grand eagle gesture, let’s just say that he adds difficulties himself. After the fall, he did a triple axel and that is strong, very strong. Phillipe added that this type of fall can quickly disturb any skater. He said he would have stopped the program directly, and go to the infirmary (joking). When the camera focused on the Hanyu’s face, Annick said “ohlalala my god, his face”. Then, they said normally Hanyu will lead the competition currently. When the score was coming, they were worried for their French skaters Amodio and Joubert and hopefully for them, Hanyu did not belong to the last group in the order of the passage.

Besides, here the link of Sochi Hanyu FS with french comments: http://www.francetvsport.fr/le-programme-de-yuzuru-hanyu-206757
Same thing for his SP: http://www.francetvsport.fr/le-record-de-hanyu-206493

I can also translate them if you want. Concerning the videos, if you think that it is interesting to put them on the media topic, why not. Edit your post and put them. Or i can create a new post with these videos + translations.

^Thank you so much Yuzusan for your hard work! I agree with you that at times these commentators talk more than they should (they couldn't even keep quiet during the epic final step sequence), but as I've seen from your translation, they do have a sharp eye and good insights (Yuzuru injured his ankle actually before the skate and had to take painkillers so Annick Dumont's impression was correct). And please do also translate the French commentary for Yuzuru's Olympic SP and FP skates. (When I clicked the links though, I was notified that the videos are non existent :(.)

Thanks also to those who posted updates and media links. Now I'm looking forward to the victory parade for Yuzuru in his hometown of Sendai and praying that no untoward incident will happen. For all it has suffered, Sendai, as well as its favorite son, deserves that moment of joy and celebration.

The two videos seem to be restricted by region. So I tried a French IP and it works. Thank you, Yuzusan, for posting them. It would be so great if you could also translate them.

^Ah ok. So not just videos from CBC and NBC websites are geoblocked in my neck of the woods (sigh). Anyway that's more than made up for by the great Yuzuru fans who upload in youtube, dailymotion, niconicodouga, etc. videos that would have otherwise been inaccessible to me. The images of Yuzuru's Olympic performances are also engraved in my mind from repeated viewing (well maybe not so much his free skate ;)) so I think I would be able to match it with Yuzusan's translation (anticipating hehe). Thanks again Yuzusan.

PS. Just saw over at the thread on the South Korean complaint that one of the GS mods Mathman has taken note of the length of our Yuzuru fanfest thread which aroused this funny (I think tongue-in-cheek) comment: "...did you see Mathman's post re: the Yuzuru thread? By those standards, we're a bunch of rank amateurs! Start typing, everyone!"

Thanks to everyone who posted updates + translations

I always love hearing what Yuzuru has to say in interviews since he's always so well versed and insightful. Most awe-inducing reply was the one he gave about what advice he would give to kids who was effected by disasters like him :points: And the cutest was the food and his ehhhhhh~ :o:

I agree. He doesn't give pre-mixed answers; you can see that he thinks his answers out and that's no mean feat under the glare of media cameras. I thought he was able to traverse through the minefield of questions well, particularly that question regarding having all the attention on him. And for all that poise and that articulateness, what is so disarming is also that naturalness and boyishness (the ehhhhh that you noted, the evident pleasure in receiving a Winnie the Pooh limited edition plushy as a gift). Ah, when he has fully grown into a man, he will really be something!

OK, we are now awash with translations by multilingual Yuzuru fans. Another lovely video from Ana@Whatever Hime: Yuzuru's 2014 Worlds epic free skate with "best comments from British Eurosport, CBC, Eurosport Spain, Teledeporte and RAI" (Spanish and Italian comments translated by Ana). Thanks again Ana!

Ah, when he has fully grown into a man, he will really be something!

We must be glad to see Yuzu's effect in any way. Thursday, there was another news referring him.

news: The Kanagawa skating rink will rebuilt

Kanagawa skating rink is the oldest rink with 63 yrs in Japan. It will be rebuilt into an international specifications by official announcement with 1800 Millions Yen.

After 311 earthquake, this rink was the first stop for Yuzu’ traveling national-wide to get somewhere to practice. Main reason is his former coach Tsuzuki Shoichiro teaching here.

Actually, the rink is aging and having financial difficulty in past few years. However with Olympics gold medal effect, the visitors increased multiple times in March. Somehow, it convinced and speeded the rebuilding plan, particularly in enterprise’s willing to invest.

I think it is a Gold medal effect in promoting the level of figure skating facility, thus more kids and skaters can be trained locally as Yuzu’s wish.

I thought I had seen all the pictures and videos of that night Yuzuru achieved his life's dream ("Katta"), but once again you came up with something I haven't seen before.

@Maria Victoria,

By the way, I saw the other photos about Orser and Yuzu in the backstage at Sochi. Share with you and all fans.

Yuzu saluted to Orser:

Orser was blushing and covered his face.

That's wonderful news and I'm sure Yuzuru would be ecstatic once he hears about this. The problems he's always emphasized about are of not having efficient training time due to rink limitations as well the disaster/effected area's in his hometown. After the Olympics he noted a few times that he realized he hasn't changed anything by winning but I'm sure that him winning OGM has cause a positive effect (as seen in this recent news), and that it simply just takes time for those effects to been seen. And even if we can't see those changes, I'm sure the kids and coaches who train at Kanagawa rink will most definitely feel it.

I feel like he's such a role model not just for younger children but for adults as well even though (as he said himself) he's still just a kid himself
*bonus video of Yuzu when he was still with coach Tsuzuki-san :p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMF04B_54nQ

@echotpe: Thanks so much for sharing the good news about the rebuilding of the Kanagawa skating rink being helped by its association with Yuzuru. "Yuzuru effect" indeed, and I see it also, as you have noted, in this thread where we help each other out in accessing materials about him through posting of media links, translations; and for the creative geniuses among us, the making of Yuzuru videos, GIFs, fan art.

Re the photos of Brian Orser and Yuzuru, unfortunately, like celestecruz, I cannot access them. When I click the links, I see other photos of an NGO I think. :(

Amazing amazing video!! I got goosebumps  thanks for sharing and also thanks to the creator of the video.

@echotpe: Thanks so much for the wonderful news! I just imagined Yuzu hearing this news and I'm so pleased, I feel like a proud mom...! (I've always wanted to ask his parents how to raise such a amazing kid ...)

So appearanly "Longest thread on Golden Skate currently: Yuzuru Hanyu Fan Fest, 338 pages, 5057 posts"
Yes just like Yuzuru, we've made history!

http://wasedasports.com/news/20140424_13217/
This is the interview he gave in Waseda.
Basically what interests me the most here is his attitude towards the development of his skating and his gaze on some aspects of expressing himself on ice. And that bothered me a bit. Also, there is an information that he chose Waseda because of Arakawa.
I can't translate it but I got some help. I may be inaccurate but what he says in short.
He said he likes such subjects as psychology and especially the course named "the informatics of feelings" (?) (感覚- a feeling, a sense (vision, hearing, touch)) that he'd taken that year, and that he's going to study them hard because they're directly connected with (related to) skating. He wants to observe, to analyze his skating from the scientific side(from a scientific point of view). Human studies allow him to scientifically analyze artistry, technique and state of mind/mental state.
And this does bother me a bit. When I remember him in Nice, his wild passion leaded him and he had almost no serious mental control over his emotions while he was performing, he simply expressed his emotions, feelings, memories. This also harmed him in some way because he fell because of that but his skating was absolutely beautiful because it was natural. The same goes for following two years until now, he just learnt some control and didn't lose his passion as Orser said. But I fear that he will lose the way to express himself because of this science, the natural way to express himself because of this senseless (as for me) observing. I fear that his expression on the ice and skating will loose its naturalness. I mean... Why do you want to observe something, analyze and learn? Not because you want to know how it happens but also because you want to use it, control it, rule it.

Hanyu has said in a documentary taken when he was 16-17 that he has an analytical mind, geared to science and math. I think that his way of learning is unique and it hasn't harmed him so far to analyze things...it has helped him have an advantage over other competitors too. If this is the way he takes in artistry, then it obviously has been working well for him so far.

 It's just the kid likes to talk big. Do you think that ANY SKATER out there, no matter how much mental power they have, could go out to the ice rink, with millions of people watching you, and remember to analyze every move your yourself?;) I bet even Plushy or Kim Yuna, the one who are famous for their nerves of steel, couldn't do that.

You go out there, you finish all the jumps and spins, that is a miracle itself. Not to mention Yuzuru's program is one of the most technical-loaded.;) I bet no science or psychology would help you with that other than your instinct and hard training.

I were a kid once, I choose the major I studied with big intention from the beginning, but life happens and you end up different. Nothing serious, don't worry. Lots of his talk I can see resemblance somewhere in Shounen manga.

I get it, I get it. I see what you mean. It's really not so serious when you look at it this way.
Yeah, I remember him saying that he doesn't know how he finished his program in Sochi because he did every jump with blank mind, based on instincts :D And I'm sure every skate that took him titanic efforts was like that. When I look at things from another angle, he's always ended up exhausted after every free skate, in such state you can't rely on rules, settings, knowledge. That's probably the thing. But if it really helps him in some way, maybe to look at his performing from the side and analyze his mistakes, then it's wonderful. I'm sure he studies it because it somehow helps him. Well, at least motivates him to study, cause he can connect the lessons with his beloved skating. :)

【news】Yuzu representing the Olympics players to accept the national commendation

Friday(4/25), Japan Prime Minister Abe sent the souvenir gifts to Olympics and disabled Olympics players, whom are rank top 8, total sixty players including Yuzu, Mao, Takahashi and Kasai.

On behalf of the players, Yuzu received the gifts from Abe and replied that they will work hard to won the best results.

By the way, there is a scene after ceremony. The Japan Olympics team leader, Seiko Hashimoto, suggested Abe hugging with Mao. But Abe was hesitated because the "hug" might result upset of Mao’s fans.

At this time, Yuzu actively proposed that he could hug with Abe firstly, then Mao did the same would be ok (for fans). This smart young man defused an embarrassment.

I agree with Meoima. I've read smth about his major - cognitive science, it actually does study human intellectual processes and emotions, but as far as I understood, the praсtical meaning of it is creating an artificial intellect, so I doubt he can apply his knowledge to himself, but maybe in future he could engineer a robot-figure skater
