Well, as one who didn't understand Jeremy's comments, yes I do have a problem with Gracie's comments. Was something in the water at Champs Camp:scratch: I agree with the analysis of mrrice as to what Gracie may have been trying to say, but it still makes no sense to me ... I'm just going to go twirl around on the ice for me. See ya!
Also, karne makes a good point about Gracie. For all those who champion Jeremy's honesty, that is fine and good, but you can't pick and choose when to be honest. I am not hating on or picking on Jeremy, but if honesty is a skater's goal, then I would love to hear "That short program sucked for air. I let my country down, my teammates down, and myself down. I can do better, and I will."
When I hear *that*, I will believe in honesty....

In spite of everything, though, I am willing to cut Jeremy some slack. He is not a politician or a TV pitchman. Sometimes you try to say something and it comes out wrong. Taking a wild guess, I think he often just repeats back what his advisors, coaches, and sports psychologists tell him. The power of positive thinking; if you fall, leap back up with a determined grin; every setback just makes you stronger -- that sort of thing.
I do wish, though, that the "I'm just skating for myself" crowd would switch to, "This year I'm just skating for my fans, who have been so supportive of my career through thick and thin." Yeah, OK, blah blah blah. But at least it's feel-good blah blah blah instead of off-putting blah blah blah.

I have been critical of Jeremy in the past, but my feelings have changed. The USFSA knows exactly what to expect from him at this point; he is likely to skate well at Nationals and not anywhere else. If they choose to keep backing him and sending him to Worlds, the consequences are solely the responsibility of the USFSA. Jeremy tries his best, that's all we can ask of him.
"Not skating well at worlds" got us 3 slots
He placed higher than other recent US men. He probably should have been 4th, but got low balled on PCS
He actually did OK at Worlds.
Had he been sent in 2011, the US might not have lost a slot. The 3 men sent lost it.
On another note- Ross looked very polished yesterday in the Autumn Classic.

He did not get back 3 spots in 2012. And who knows even if he went in 2011, maybe he would have lost them anyway; there's no way of knowing.
Again, I definitely give credit where credit is due -- thanks for the 3 spots in 2014 -- but he also has skated quite poorly internationally as well. Again -- moments of brilliance mixed with frustration.

I didn't say he didn't skate "OK" at Worlds. His Worlds placement was helped by the absence of Chan, Ten, and Takahashi, all of whom has Olympic scores higher than Abbott's WC score of 246. He may in fact be the best bet for the US men (at least among the top 3 we send to Worlds) but we all know a meltdown is likely. His Olympic placements are 9 and 11, and his Worlds placements were 11, 11, 5, 8 and 5. He had a few "OK" results but 5 bad results and 2 OK results does lead me to think it is more likely than not to bomb.

Mathman, you're a very nice person and I guess we should all forgive Jeremy for his lack of sensitivity. However, I have a problem cutting Jeremy anymore slack as I've been doing it for years.
He may not be a politician but, he's almost 30 years old. He knows by now that anything he says regarding his skating will be scrutinized by many people. Also, he should realize that many young skaters and fans for that matter, look up to him and like it or not, he's the US Champion and should behave as one.
It may sound stupid but, when I used to sing for Coca Cola we were told that if we made any public statements, regardless of subject, that they better reflect a positive image. If not, we were fired and sent home at our own expense from wherever we happened to be.
We had several dinners with our sponsors and a dancer from the company said, " I was so tired tonight, thank god my boyfriend left as he kept me up all night." Now, she said this to me, not to anyone else. However, she was overheard by one of our sponsors and fired the next day.
You see, it was no problem that her boyfriend came to visit our tour. It was no problem for her to stay up all night with him. However, it was a problem that she spoke about it in front of the sponsors. It sounds stupid but, we all knew the rules.
Jeremy is the US Champion and represents an entire country, not just himself.

This will always be correct however I think Jason is just saying how thankful he is to have been selected for Skate America for the opportunity to skate not only in his country but also in his hometown which just so happens to be the location this year.
Of course, but I think his point was that he's excited about competing in his home state.

Yes, but American skaters don't always get to compete at Skate America.
I cut all skaters slack on what they say to the media. I'm more interested in what they do on the ice.
I'm not interested in deciding who's a good guy or a bad guy based on how they answer press questions.
Sometimes their comments are interesting and show some personality, but usually they're too boring to be worth spending much time parsing.

I know that you're joking about the water at Champs Camp , but as an FYI/aside, Jeremy's and Gracie's media calls on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, are the sources of the quotes that have prompted so much spirited discussion here this week.
(Or maybe you mean that their mindsets were established at Champs Camp and remain intact to this day?? :think

BTW ... in his new article, Josh cites Jeremy as one of his inspirations (Jason is another). A quote from Josh:
"... I look up to Jeremy a lot, and the fact that he could make that big of a mistake [in the short program] and have that bad of a fall and that he could come back, that really inspired me.”
ETA, Jeremy also was one of Josh's mentors on the SOI tour; the other was Charlie White.
