His Lutz is not huge, but it is bigger than it was, if still small compared to other skaters. Certainly as I said then, too small for a 4Lz. But that flip is big enough for 4F, I think.

I think Joshua also said in an interview that he has been trying 4F, and Max threw in a 4Lo at one of the SOI shows last year (alas, no video).

I don't think the "It doesn't mean they are going to win" was needed and in hindsight really unfortunate. His full answer was very food and I wish he had left out the snickering about winning so that some of his other better points would have been the focus. He did sound very genuine when talking about it being good for the sport. Less catty more, un-media savvy. I rather liked the rest of his answer.

And if you want a drinking game. . . have a shot every time he says "biometrics" you should be feeling pretty good by the end.

it was a very VERY leading question- Essentially-paraphrasing "You have been #1 man but now Brown has made a splash doesn't that bother you"


It will be interesting to see how the "biometric" changes hold up under competition pressure. Last season the buzz word was "plyometrics". He does take his training seriously.

It is good to know he has less pain-he's been skating in pain for several seasons now.

I believe it was an adaptation of his exhibition to Disclosure and Sam Smith's 'Latch.' Changed to a different SS song :)
 
Wasn't last season's first SP rumored to be a 1930's-1940's swing theme? I'm not sure the music was ever leaked.....but I thought it was changed just prior to Champs Camp.

Totally agree with this. However, I really don't see him losing to Joshua, Ross, Jeremy and Max. Maybe 1 or 2 of them but none of them has the consistency that Jason has and several of them don't have the PCS scores consistently that Jason has. I really hate this whole discussion about quads. For the men it's become the focus and it's only 1 or 2 jumps in a program filled with spins, jumps and footwork. Figure skating should be about the whole package - not a couple of jumps. There is way too much emphasis put on quads and they're ruining programs. causing injuries, and only a few of the men pull them off with any degree of quality. And I completely agree with the comment that Kori has Jason right where she wants him now. She is not going to risk injury in someone so young and at this stage of his career. He's a gifted athlete and it's only a matter of time. If he doesn't win everything he competes in it will be no big deal at his age. He said last year they were aiming for 2018 anyway and his 2014 accomplishments were an added bonus. (paraphrasing here)

Yes less pain is always good! And really if he likes his prefixmetrics de jour that is fine. He did not over do it, just did it enough I may pour a shot when I hear him say it from now on. . . or have a chocolate candy and pretend it is a shot and still call it a drinking game.
 
I don't think Jason will be able to get away with a performance like he had at Nebelhorn (at most competitions), where he had 4 technical errors in his long program. A good PCS score can sustain only so much.

I just saw this or I would have said something sooner. We are definitely on the same page when it comes to Jason and his current skating. ICY said "I don't think Jason will be able to get away with a performance like he had at Nebelhorn." I completely agree with that statement. However, it's early and Jason did enough to win which is fine at this point.

I guess with so many people demanding he put his quad in now. It makes me respect Kori even more for letting Jason wait until he's comfortable with it. Injury has always been a factor in skating but, in this era, it's certainly become even bigger. I wish more people would give Jason some respect for doing what he does as well as he does it.

I remember learning heel extensions in dance and though Jason makes it look easy, they're not. Anyone who happens to be flexible can grab their foot and put it in the air. However, keeping your hip down, making sure your turned from your hip through your skate, while setting up to do a Lutz, then completing the Lutz with Jason's quality, is very difficult.

I hope Kori keeps Jason on his current path and doesn't succumb to the constant pressure when it comes to Jason's quad.
 
I don't think fans (most of) are pushing, or putting any pressure on Jason to pud a quad in. I think it is more US media that are putting and generating too much pressure on him. When you see any US article about Jason there is always something like "it is just quad that holds of Jason from big guns, and if he will get quad then, tralala". They are just generating overall pressure and conviction to some let's say casual fans, that if he will get quad than he will beat everyone, which is not so straight forward like they are showing.
If he will get quad, then he will get quad. Time will tell

But I do think US fans are putting as much pressure on Jason as the US Media. Just read any thread on this board that even remotely mentions men's figure skating in the US and it will be mostly about who is landing the quads, who isn't, etc. etc. I am and will always be a fan of the total package (which is why it's pretty documented and I've taken some heat for not liking the style of a current favorite.....)

And just a titch about Nebelhorn and Jason's program. It was the first major competition he had this year. If you think back to last year and Riverdance, he peaked his performance to date at Nationals. How many of the elite skaters go out there the first or second competition and have their program totally nailed? I think it's horribly unfair to dissect programs and then criticize them this early in the season.

Interestingly, he made it a point to say that he's aiming to peak at worlds. Which suggests to me that the quad, if it appears this season, may not do so until nationals or worlds. I also found it very interesting to hear how he's trying to pace himself by not giving 110% of himself all the time, but rather learning to take advantage of the down times to recover. I have to say, though, I found a lot of the presser disconcertingly rehearsed sounding - eg that he already knew the questions, had planned how to answer them, and made sure to get in all the "important" points. It makes me think that he is under a ton of pressure from USFS to be the "it" kid who will grow audiences, which is really not fair to him. In a way I think Jeremy is lucky to be flying under the radar right now.

I think you're prob. looking at me (for one), noskates. ;)

I don't think you can deny that equally dominant/ubiquitous topics in threads about U.S. men include: who does or not have a PCS advantage; whose PCS are or are not improving at an encouraging pace; etc., etc.

Some GS members are broken records who are fixated on PCS. Some are fixated on quads. Others (many of us, I would hope) are in between.

Alas and alack Golden, you are not the only one and I'm fine with that. While I may prefer one skater over another, I want all the US men to be successful. I think we have a wonderful crop of youngsters out there right now (and yes, one that is getting long in the tooth) and the next 4 years are so promising! May they all stay healthy!
