Ashlie Slatter & Atl Ongay-Perez

I have just seen this Fan Page. Perhaps you'd like to read this article and interview I wrote for IDC during the Pandemic when Ashlie & Atl were Novices. (If a couple of sentences aren't grammatical or don't make sense it's because IDC changed my words / omitted a sentence after submitting the article without informing me).

Good Luck for Junior Worlds in Taipei Ash & Atl!!!! 💕💕💕🇬🇧🌷🌷🌷
I very seldom form a fanship for any particular skaters, whether individuals, pairs or dance couples. I watch a competition, enjoy some performances, don't care as much for others, and move on to the next competition. If I have reason to know a skater in real life and don't like them as a person, I'm not going to like their skating no matter how brilliantly they perform. But these two kids have something that really stands out for me and that I always enjoy watching the more they grow, and the few people I know who also know them are always complimentary. One of the rare times I can say I'm a fan!

Although I've run into Ted Barton quite often in the past, I don't know him well enough to phone him and say, "It's just three letters, Ted! A-T-L! How difficult is that?"

Called the kid "Alt" every time :bang:

it's Ted, i'm pretty sure he butchers his own name twice a day :ROFLMAO:

Why did they split 🥹

Atl posted this on Instagram last Saturday explaining what happened:

Basically, he hasn't been happy with the setup at Streatham for a few years now, and so wanted to move. But Ashlie wanted to stay. And, regrettably, they couldn't find common ground, and it led to them splitting.

Atl is now training at the newly re-built rink at Lee Valley.

Now that we've heard his side of the story, I can understand. You have to be comfortable in you training environment. If not, it will get you down and you will not be able to perform to your best ability.

It's just a shame that they didn't both feel the same way, because they were so good together. But, people are different.

All the best to both of them for whatever the future holds.

I am very sad. I can’t criticize or second guess Atl’s decision because it’s his decision to make. But I am very sad.
Anything I hear from my relatives who skate in the UK is second-hand, but they agree that the atmosphere at Streatham was toxic, for him more than for her. He didn't want to split up, but, being older and more mature and able to make his own decisions, he did the right thing for his mental health by leaving. I hope he finds a new partner who can match his performance level.

Thanks for sharing. I hope Ashlie will be okay. I know that nothing is perfect in this world, but I am always very sad to hear of toxic situations in skating. It’s such a beautiful sport . . .if only everything about it could be beautiful. I don’t want anyone to experience toxic, abusive, or unsafe conditions for the sake of sport. I wish them both all the best.
