2025-26 British and Irish figure skating

Molly Hairsine and Alessio Surenkov-Gultchev (ice dance) have switched from Great Britain to Bulgaria.
Does one of them have Bulgarian Roots? Probably Alessio. I believe Bulgaria has no ID-team at the moment, so it might be a good move for them.

I don't know, I'm afraid, but hope it's a good move for them - they have loads of potential as a team, and I'm just sorry that I won't get to see them competing at British nationals.

It's the final Ice Dance qualifiers for Nationals this week. Looks like Charlotte Man and Toby Palmer have now qualified for nationals - well done to them.

Huge improvement for Layla Karnes and Freddie Leggott at this event since their outing at the Bolero Cup - they're now only a few points away from reaching the required tech score for Europeans. They're also skating at the Denkova-Staviski cup this week (along with British teams Sophia Bushell/Antonio Pena, Lily Matthias and Henry Privett-Mendoza. Molly Hairsine and Alessio Surenkov-Gultchev are also skating there (but no longer for UK but for Bulgaria).

Nina Povey and Genevieve Somerville are also competing at the Denkova-Staviski Cup this week

Edward Solovyov and Ken and Lucas Fitterer, Alice Smith and Ava-Mae Wilson are competing at the Volvo Cup this week.

Also Davison/Borisov competing as seniors at Ice Challenge (Austria) this week.

I would also like to see Emma Lyons go out to another senior competition soon. We could do with either her or Genevieve Somerville getting the tech min for Euros. They are both 11-12 points away at the moment. It is a shame to have to second spot Kristen gained going to waste.

It's nice to see a big contingent of British skaters all going to the Denkova Staviski cup together. The junior ice dance teams are also there, along with Arina Vorobeva, Jess Worth and Jack Donovan (not Leilah Patten who I was sorting of expecting to see on the list) - and there is a solo dance event on at the same time with lots of Brits in both junior and senior.

Is there a second spot for pairs at Euros that we could still have? Bit of a long shot for Davison/Borisov to get the mins if so but maybe that's in the back of their minds?

Wishing everyone good luck in their competitions, but especially those that are reaching for those minimums, I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Editing to add: do Molly and Alessio get to carry over the minimums they already have for jr worlds or would they need to earn them again for Bulgaria???

Thanks for highlighting the British junior singles and ice dance teams at the Denkova Staviski Cup - I'd missed that information. Wishing them all success.

Yes, we have a second pairs spot for Euros. It would need Davison/Borisov to get the technical minimums in time (or Wood/Lapsky, who haven't competed as seniors yet).

I thought there was an Irish dance team that showed promise but I think they really were Canadians??? Looks like Britain hae a good chance for an olympic bronze in dance. Also promising in pairs. Men and women still a struggle.

Are you thinking of Carolane Soucisse and Shane Firus? They skated for Canada until two years ago and then switched to representing Ireland. They seem to have lost ground since then, though.

I like them very much and look forward to their performances🥰

I do too (still love that beautiful pale green dress she wore last year!), but I'd read comments saying their international standing had dropped since they switched countries. I don't follow those much, so hadn't noticed. He and his brother are from Vancouver, so there was something in local news last year about Shane and Carolane getting married.

I vaguely remember hearing of their marriage too.. and the dress and dance were lovely. Another case where one would rather watch them than the “winners” any day. 🙂

It looks like Phebe Bekker and James Hernandez have now been assigned to the Finlandia GP as replacements for the Finnish team who withdrew. That will mean that they are competing in GP events two weeks in a row (and on opposite sides of the world!).

and British Nationals the following weekend, too 😲

Just continuing the Irish Ice Dance discussion.

You know the way I have been highlighting for the past couple of years that half-Irish girl Milla O'BRIEN, who used to skate with Laurin WIEDERKEHR for Switzerland (ISU Bio), is currently without an Ice Dance partner. Well, while watching the NRW Trophy this week, I found out that another half-Irish girl split with her Ice Dance partner around the same time. Holly Julie MOORE, who used to skate with Jan EGOROV for Germany (ISU Bio).

I don't know if Holly has a new partner, or if she is even looking for one. I've been doing some digging, and found that she has been competing in Singles in the past couple of seasons. She competed in Novice B Ladies at the past two editions of the Ruhr Cup, finishing 3rd in 2024; and 2nd in the 2025 edition last month. As she's doing well, she might be happy enough to continue in Singles. But, I wanted to get her name into the discussion, in case she does want to return to Ice Dance.

I think we all realise that Carolane and Shane are in the twilight of their careers. And I know that the ISAI has not been involved in Ice Dance for long. But it would be nice if that could continue beyond Carolane and Shane. And here are two promising young Ice Dance girls who could provide a future for Ice Dance in Ireland if suitable partners can be found for them.
