Ever since China's Wenjing Sui and Cong Han entered the international scene back in 2009, this ambitious team has belonged to the top pairs, first at the junior level, and now at the senior. [More]

Sui and Han, who teamed up in 2007, have performed the quad throw Salchow in the past and have been training it again. They would like to bring this element back to competition as soon as next season.

“We haven’t decided our new programs yet, but as we’ve already planned, we are going to add another quad (throw) to our program, so we will work on that element,” Sui offered. “We still need to discuss (details) with our coaches.”

“No matter what we’ve achieved, we still need to find our shortcomings and work on them,” added her partner. “We cannot lose our focus because of a medal. We want to keep improving every aspect of our skating, and try to catch up to other top teams in this field.”

Han is mainly referring to bridging the gap between them and the Canadian team of Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, that took first place in Shanghai by just over seven points.

“We are just catching up step by step,” noted Han. “At beginning, it was about 40 points, then 20 points.

I look forward to seeing them grow artistically. They are so pleasing to watch!

I love this pair, I hope for them a brilliant future (even if the present is already great ;) their SP was my favourite this year)
Their technique is strong (those ... throws..... ) but they have still room to improve the artistic side !!
Wishing them all the best !

To me, they're arguably the perfect balance of technical and artistry of the teams competing today (D/R are more technical, S/K are more artistic, K/S are balanced but inconsistent). Them and T/M are going to be very exciting to watch over the next quadrennial. The only "strike" against them is that their age makes them not look as mature, however, even that they've improved upon greatly and they look like they belong in the top echelon of skaters.

I watch figure skating first and foremost for 'entertainment' value. Levels, quality of skating etc. doesn't mean too much to me, but boy, can these two capture an audience. I hope to see plenty more of them in the coming years!

thanks for the article! i love love love them more and more everyday, not just cause they are amazing skaters, they also seem they are down to earth, humble, grateful and happy to be skating, when i look at their worlds fp while they were waiting for their score Han was really humble and geniune, and of course we cant forget our king Sui  they dont let world medal distract them and still looking for shortcomings and improve, i hope they will go to TCC this summer again to work with Wilson&Wilson ( and i cant wait to see their quad throw )

They have worked with Zoueva in the past. IIRC she choreographed their SP during the 2014 season.

I think SUI has this delightful "stretch like nobody's business" quality to her lines that are reminiscent of Shen version 2.0

Love her :agree:

oh yes! adding the 4STh...i love the big elements

looking to foward to see them on the very top next year

I think they are next years favourites for world gold. I think the judges like them, they are technically going to be ahead of D and R with a throw quad and artisically really improved. D and R will have to come up with something artistically and maybe add a throw triple axel to compete with this team. I am not sure if D and R deserve all this hate and have no idea if what we read on these websites really is communicated to the judges or real world so to speak. I mean we are pretty hard core on this website. The discussions are intense lol often but i am not sure if the rest of the world really cares or listens.

S/H will not definitively be ahead of D/R, even with a 4STh. That being said, it's always nice to see two quads from any team.

D/R are still pretty much on par if not ahead of S/H PCS-wise (though I consider S/H more artistic/finessed), and they have an advantage with their SBS 3Z in each program, as well as a surprisingly consistent 4Th.

Points wise: The highest BV for TES that D/R achieved this season is 32.20 for the SP and 63.50 for the FS (total 95.70). I believe the highest base values S/H achieved this season are 30.70 in the SP and 59.50 in the FS (total: 90.20). Neither maxed out their levels, but if they did it would add about 1.5-2 points only. But in general, D/R have about 5 points higher base value across both programs than S/H. The difference between a 4STh and a 3STh is 3.5 points. So, no, upgrading their 3STh to a 4STh is not enough to put them ahead of D/R technically. It does get them pretty close though. If D/R maxed out their levels they'd get 64 BV, and if S/H maxed out their levels and added a 4STh they would get 64.5 BV (though that 0.5 points is negated by D/R having 1.5 points higher BV in the SP).

Until they allow quads in the SP or S/H upgrade to harder SBS triples, they will always have (overall SP+LP) less base value than D/R. And that goes for all the pairs.
