Kazuki Tomono

I can do Spur translation if nobody does it soon enough, but I'd wait a bit in case they're planning to publish some of them online.
I bought its digital version, Stephane's part was a bit too good to skim through. (But, digital books wouldn't let me screenshot the photos, sorry :( )

I would LOVE a translation, Tsurara!

A cut from Kazuki's interview to Japanese TV after 4CC FS

From transcripts on Twitter, I think he said in the interview "Regardless of how much I need to suffer, I definitely want to return to this stage with a good result and someday shine at the top. I will return home, get stronger and come back"

(P.S. Used online translators so sorry for any mistakes)

Yeah, keep fighting Kazuki Kun

Also seems he attended some event, I guess related to his university and here are some updates from it (Check the IGS for tapi_emiri for more cute Kazuki)

It's so nice to see him smiling again :luv17:

Apparently they had their last game/event for the senior (as in 4th year student) skaters. One of the tags there says #引退試合/retiring skaters' match, which is for those who graduate uni and leave the club.

The event seemed like 'Kazuki and a lot of girls'

Yes, it is. And I'm pretty sure most college figure-skating clubs have a lot more ladies than men.

So, I changed my mind and decided to go for the translation now, because if Spur is to publish their articles online, it'll take a few weeks at earliest, and then I might get too busy to do it by then. (JW, WC...and the end of our fiscal year and everything, besides we may get more REAL news by then with Universiade!) Or they may just publish Stephane's one only. I shouldn't be tantalizing you any further with just one page article anyways, right? :coffee:

The Place Kazuki Tomono Stands Now (or current location of Kazuki Tomono)

2 photos of his in a beige sweater (ofc with 'moe' sleeves) at Doshisha campus, and I believe they did his hair. It's done very nicely and handsomely. I'm not sure if the sweater is his or Spur prepared for the shooting like anan did. (Koshiro's shirt was definitely his own again, though.)

~I’m a very bright/cheerful person. I guess it shows in my performance too.

Placed 5th overall at WC after the Olympics last March, Tomono received international applause. We could say that Japan having 3 slots for Men’s Single discipline at this year’s WC was due largely to his successful results too.

“Looking back, I think I frantically kept on telling myself, ‘I got to sell myself to the world. This is such a rare opportunity, I’m gonna stake my life and take a chance.’ That said, it is also a fact that I, who just moved up to Seniors and was almost nobody, performed there and took the (5th) place. I was really encouraged by myself then. But at the same time, I saw my senpai skaters getting results when so much attention was directed at them. I made up my mind to commit myself to reaching there (=where they are). That was a turning point in my life.”

The 20 years old, who has just celebrated Coming of Age Day, says he’s been going through the struggling period of the second Senior year.

“I had set my goal for the 2018-19 season to get on a podium at all competitions. I did achieve one, at the Russian round of the Grand Prix series, though. At Nationals, my results fell far short of the mark and I couldn’t make it to WC. It’s so disappointing/frustrating. But my problems have become clear. Not just about big guns like landing quads successfully, but also, each and every single element needs to be polished. In that regard, Takahashi, Uno, and Tanaka were all sophisticated at Nationals. I had the opportunity to take part in a competition with Hanyu, and (I found that) his resolution and concentration for a competition was outclassing. He’s in the incomprehensible realm. In order to try to comprehend, I need to get closer to where he is, even for a little bit. This is a critical period for me to learn things like that, and it’s rare to get a hint in the immediate vicinity.”

Tomono is a danceable and remarkable skater with his exceptional charm to draw audience deep into the music. Still, he says he was struck with awe by Takahashi, whom he respects, at Nationals.

“I was really stunned by his ‘Mambo’ I watched at the gala practice. It’s a given that he’s got high quality skating techniques, but I could feel this power that could not be judged by scores. Nobody can copy him. Needless to say he’s in flow with the music, but what's more, every single movement of his is carefully done and he never misses the sound, not even one note. Because I’m a skater myself, I can see that he’s skating on a whole other level. Like it is often said ‘(fans) can’t pick one best program (too many bests to choose from),’ I too want to be like him and thrill/excite everyone with my performances. I’d like to cherish every single program of mine.”

With his positive personality, you can see that he has infinite potential for the future.

“I believe that every skater can play the leading role at figure-skating. For instance, some skaters may not be good with jumps but are great at expressions or skating. I like finding each skater’s good points. I watch them wanting/considering to adopt them in my performance too no matter their results.”

Costumes (with a small photo each)
1 SP
“My mother knows well how costumes look to the audience, and I often incorporate her opinions.” He ordered his SP costume at Chacott for the first time.
2 FS
His FS costume uses a highly chromogenic (?produces great color or that sort) fabric, so went for green. Cleverly designed with layers of lace to enhance the illusion (or perception) of depth.

Chacott is a shop for ballet, dance, etc and they sell figure-skating goods and costumes too (Yup, that model there is Koshiro lol)

---

There is another small and short part that Spur's ad article mentioned as "detailed approach" (which I interpreted "tricky" but wasn't tricky at all) and I'll translate that part tomorrow or sometime later. It says "Tomono Goroku(analects?)". Some unique phrases that supposedly describe Tomono-kun.

As for FS costume, I thought he picked green because of the music... hmmm? Or would it have been difficult to pick green if the material was too cheap? I'm not at all into fabrics and textiles, so it could be my misunderstanding. Sorry if that is the case.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, TSURARA!

As usual, Kazuki is so honest and down to Earth... :luv17: It's nice to know he felt so inspired by Dai Takahashi.
Also, his mum helps with his costumes! She's got good taste :agree:

Oh, did you see Kazuki's latest IG post: https://www.instagram.com/p/BuTQywMhrzP/
It's him and Sasahara-senpai, he says 'thank you', right? Not sure if Sasahara-senpai is retiring, or just graduating...

~友野語録/Tomono Goroku~

Goroku 1 “バカ舌” (Baka-jita, lit. idiot tongue)
“When it comes to food, I’m accepting and find anything (or any type of food) tasty. My friends say I’ve got a stupid tongue (having a poor taste, opposite of gourmet). If you look at it negatively, it might mean that I lack discernment, but I’d appreciate it if you take that as I’m open to and interested in anything. I have a tendency to search for something good in (basically) anything.”

Goroku 2 “モードもイケる” (Curious about Mode too)
“As for fashion, I’m interested in Street and British-tic (sort-of British, or British-like). I’m curious about Mode, too. I know what looks good on me, and my recent favorite is Tomorrowland. I like Fred Perry too as their ‘silhouette’ is stylish, and I bought one of their Mods' Coat (aka M-51 Parka). I usually research fashion on internet and buy clothes from a real store.”

Notes: "イケる"(lit. "can go", originally "can accept ~" or "~ will do") is a tough slang word to translate...It often means "(someone is) good at ~" or "(someone) likes ~" and I think the writer meant to say the latter here and I used 'curious' for the translation. And when you hear "モード/Mode" or "モード系" in Japanese, it often refers to high fashion clothing brands from the latest European collections, quite often in black/grey/white or sometimes very 'adventurous' that you don't wear in daily life but for parties or some special events or just for window shopping...I think. I'm not really a fashion type of person to explain the term accurately. (Hopefully someone else can chime in to point out the true meaning of it.) As for 'British-tic', the original Japanese is 英国ちっく(Britain/England+tic). Like I said 'sort-of', I think he means British fashion, but possibly fake British or some made-up British fashion popular in Japan. If GB hosts a fs competition and Tomono-kun takes part in it, you may get to see how he reacts to London kids on the street...
Okay, next, I wasn't sure if 'silhouette' is a common word in English so I inserted wiki page explanation there just in case. It is a common term in Japanese when talking about fashion. Another term, where I translated as 'stylish' is a famous all-purpose Osaka dialect, "シュッとしてる"...It can mean anything, but generally positive, so I just used 'stylish', 'cool' would do too. "シルエットがシュッとしてるフレッドペリー" what a sentence, you know...it gave me a headache. I hope Tomono-kun avoids using these types of language when he gets an interview from international media with an interpreter lol Finally, I think these are what he called Mods' Coat.

Goroku 3 “おじさん的に育てる” (Growing stuff like an old man)
“I like such young-looking street style parka and shiny stuff too, but I’m also interested in growing leather. What, does that sound like an old man? (laugh) I find it neat to see things aged, developing some unique patina and all after long years. I’m just curious about all sorts of things, and I guess I have to have a finger in every pie.”

TBS channel is going to re-broadcast Stars On Ice shows in the past. The one on March 3 is SOI 2017, when Tomono-kun appeared as the Junior gold medalist. Remember the Koi-dance video with Tomono-kun appearing a little bit but in an extremely low quality? And of course his "We Are the Champion!" exhibition program (with 'Juniors, though' flag)? Now, sometime later, someone may re-upload a better quality video of those, until it gets taken down like many others did.

OOOOOOHHH THANK YOU, TSURARA! 😭

really appreciate your translation, especially with so many tricky words!

I love how he is so curious and interested in other things apart from skating. He comes across as a truly well-balanced and down to Earth person.

And his love for British fashion got me all OMG OMG OMG - I mean, what would I do if I bumped into him in the streets of London!?

Sadly GB doesn't host any international FS events, but maybe he would come as a tourist...

Thanks Tsurara for the translation :luv17:

I think the highlight for me in this interview is when he said "I believe that every skater can play the leading role at figure-skating. For instance, some skaters may not be good with jumps but are great at expressions or skating. I like finding each skater’s good points. I watch them wanting/considering to adopt them in my performance too no matter their results."

May be since I am relatively new to the fandom I am not used to how things work and I am sure not one who can talks about the sport techniques but TBH, it is sometimes tiring that some people love to point out the bad more than the good in general and that is the same in FS. Just like him, I always prefer enjoying the good points about performances and skaters more than focusing on bad things. Although it is a competitive sport in which scores, ranking matters the most which lead to such things and I totally understand that but still IMO that shouldn't take all our focus as viewers/fans of the sport. In the end those skaters are working hard to show those performances regardless of how much they achieved in the end.

(sorry for the rant )

BTW, I am so happy to know about the rebroadcast of SOI 2017, I didn't even know they did that dance there. I hope we really get HD version of his performances there

Finally, I saw Kazuki having a conversation with Wakaba on Twitter but I am not sure what they are talking about?! I hope they aren't having some cold or something!!

bbbbb...But, didn't GB host WC several years ago? You never know what will happen!
I'm afraid Tomono-kun wouldn't have the luxury (time-wise) to visit London for another while, unless he travels there or somewhere close-by for a competition, or maybe for transfer!

They're talking about hay fever. This "hay fever" craze right now, everybody(not every, I'm just exaggerating) is suffering from it now in Japan!
Wakaba talked about her runny nose, she was almost using up a box of tissue in one single day (she means it's that bad, her nose won't stop running, not sure if she is actually using up one box a day.) And Tomono-kun replied as "The same". The tag they're using says 花粉症/hay fever. The worst part for them is that they can't just use medicine, because you know they're athletes and they would never want "doping" accusations.

Fortunately, I haven't got it (...yet, hopefully never), but so many people around me too are claiming it's getting super-horrible with the pollen situation this year.

I feel your pain, same here :noshake: I wonder where Kazuki will get sent for Challengers. If they chose Nepela and Sota as his travel buddy, it would be a dream come true. I hope to cheer for Kazuki someday, and still have one blank blue banner without any kanji printed on it...

Thank you for the articles, Tsurara. Fashion-wise, I have no idea what he's talking about, lol. But this part caught my attention the most: “Looking back, I think I frantically kept on telling myself, ‘I got to sell myself to the world. I mean, if he could turn his motivation into a real power and deliver once, he can do it again. It's normal to have a flop season after a big success, right? He didn't make it to Worlds this time, but if he lets go of the pressure, he'll be the wiser for it next season and can perform in a calmer state of mind. That's what I hope for. Also, I have high hopes for him at the Universiade. Is there a stream?

Thanks for the clarification Tsurara!!

Oh, poor babies :( I hope Kazuki gets better since he will have to compete soon in Winter Universiade. I saw some news about some atheletes already travelled but I guess since figure skating competition is starting on the 7th so may be they still didn't travel there. Not sure if all will have to attend the opening ceremony on the 2nd, but Mai is team japan captain so I guess she should be attending at least.

BTW, I am wondering, are Universiade scores recognized by ISU?

There is a big fair about all things Japan every summer in London, maybe he could come as an ambassador for Osaka (a girl can dream)

I definitely think being unknown helped him there. He has spoke about how after he got 5th at Worlds, suddenly he had expectations placed upon him, and he felt he had a lot to prove... It's something that he really needs to work on.

BTW, I am wondering, are Universiade scores recognized by ISU?

Sadly, no. Universiade is a competition by FISU (International University Sports Federation), which is a different entity :noshake:

That is unfortunate!! But still I actually like that he is going to be part of this competition rather than others since it is done every two years and it has limited time to be able to participate in there as a university student in addition that it would have a bit of a similar atmosphere to the Olympics and different experience from other competitions.

Hope he can redeem himself there and end this season with a bit of satisfaction!!

This is a PDF including the list of the Japan team athletes and staff who will attend the Universiade, wish them all luck.

I agree! It's a great experience for him! :luv17:
I hope he has lots of fun and ends up his season on a positive note

I imagine he's already there... I actually saw part of the opening ceremony earlier, tried to spot him in the Japanese delegation but there were so many of them (and they were all wearing black). But everyone seemed so cheerful and the atmosphere looked amazing!

BTW, just wanted to share this cute fan art here! https://twitter.com/nozomi500k4/status/1100775435263045632

Let's hope he does well!

*whispers* Nakamura, or you can call him Shu-senpai ;)
Hahaha thanks for the correction, Tsurara! In my defence, I was sleepy when I made that typo... 😂

It seems these are the accomodations for the athletes at Krasnoyarsk! Truly has a university feel...
https://twitter.com/minostrom/status/1101781627603046400?s=19
I have the impression Kazuki lives with his family, instead of a university dorm, so this will be quite an experience for him!
