Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides

I was waiting for this conversation.

Daniella's ISU Bio is the only place I have ever seen her surname spelt "Ipsaridou".

I first came across Daniella a few years go when looking up results from the Cypriot National Championships. And "Ipsarides" is the way it is spelt in the Cyprus Skating Federation's results sheets.

"Ipsarides" is also the spelling her Mum uses for her married name on her own Facebook profile, and the spelling she uses when referring to her daughter in photos, videos, etc.

So, that is good enough for me! :agree:

Incidentally, Daniella's Mum also uses the "-ides" form for her maiden name.

It's really confusing for us English speakers the way that names have different cases in some languages. And then there is the issue of variations in transliteration (Cypriot Greek tends to be transliterated slightly differently to Greek Greek).

If you look at the results and video from the 2016 World Development Trophy in Gdańsk, they have used yet another different version of her surname: "Daniella-Vanessa Ypsarides".

Also, nobody has mentioned it here, but there are also issues about her first name. When you see her name written in Greek characters, her first name is spelt Ντανιέλα (e.g. in the title of this video where she is interviewed on TV). But, in the Latin character version, it is spelt Daniella.

Now, this is not a mistake. Even though the Greek character version of her name is spelt with one lambda, the Latin character version of her name is spelt with a double "l" everywhere. On results sheets, on her Mum's Facebook profile, on her own Facebook profile.

When you see all these different options on how to spell her name on results sheets, it's no wonder that there is confusion! :drama:

Anyway, whatever you call her, things didn't go as well as hoped on Thursday. I had been warned that morning that she was very nervous, and you could see that as soon as she appeared on camera at the start of the Warm-Up. And that carried on into her routine.

You can't blame the girl. Like, this was her first ISU competition, and she had the added pressure of being the first native skater from her country to take part in an ISU competition.

But, at least she didn't fall. That was her main worry.

Daniella finished 35th out of 35 in the Ladies SP at the Ljubljana Cup on Thursday, with a score of 18.75.

Video (whole competition): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhXmyNq-nys

But, Florencia Lin is only 1.90 points ahead of her, so if she puts in a good Free Skate, she could move up a place.

The Ladies FS is due to start at 12:20:00 CEST (11:20:00 BST / 10:20:00 GMT). So, about five hours from now.

Daniella will be the 3rd Skater to start. She is due to start at 12:40:50 CEST (11:40:50 BST / 10:40:50 GMT). But that may change if anybody before her withdraws.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST DANIELLA!!! :cheer:

Well, although i have Cypriot costudents in my University , i have never paid attention in ther last names and how we spell them and , omg , i have a boy whom last name is Mikaylides. And translating into greek i can assure you that we dont pronounce it the way you pronounce it where you see this -ides. First and foremost because you are latinogenic speaker and you dont have in you language δ which is d in Latin. Your genes say to your tongue to read it as d . You have to listen a greek speaker to understand how is delta pronounced appropriately. ALSO , we dont read e but i , if you can understand the difference in spelling. Furthemore , her mother has taken the last name of her husband and because he is a Cypriot she has kept it with -ides. BUT , for girls , the right pronunciation is in -idou. For boys it is -ides. It is common , though , that in the latinogenic translation girls and womens take the fathers last name as it is . I dont know why. The only explanation that i could give is that this is something common for greek names ( for obvious reasons and cypriots ) to be translated in that way because English language does not have....( dont know the word ) ...genitiv . We have different words for a cat which depends in which way we actually want to reffer to it . lol ⭕ I am sure it is sounds a bit complicated and hard to learn buuuuut i find it simple  Hehe. As for her first name , in greek language either you pronunciate it with one l or with 2 l it is EXACTLY the same , believe me. Unless you are from Thessaloniki and when you see one lambda you pronounce it heavier :P Possibly , it is Ντανιελλα in greek too and in the wikipedia it is wrong. Or maybe the opposite. But no problem in that. Hope i managed to explain you that problem. :scratch2::giveup:
P.s. greek language is the same as cypriot. So i refer to this as greek because practically we speak the same language , we have the same ethnical music ( god i dont know the proper word :shame: ) but different flag. ANd of course many of Cypriots hate greek people while others love them and believe themselves as Greek ones too ! Thats hjust a little history so that i am not misunderstood.

Due to what reasons?

I was talking to her Mum about an hour ago. Now, I didn't get a chance to ask if I should go into details on here, but the gist of it is that Daniella was not well when she woke up this morning. She went to 2 doctors (the Russian team doctor and an ISU doctor), and they said she had a virus and advised her to withdraw.

She's in bed now.

So, I would say that was why things didn't go well in the SP on Thursday. It wasn't just nerves (as I thought); it was the early stages of this illness.

I wish her all the best for her recovery.

Haven't posted in this thread in a long time, so thought this would be a good opportunity to bump it up.

:cheer: HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY DANIELLA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

I hope you are having an enjoyable day, and that the next year is a good one for you, both on and off the ice!

And I wish you all the best in your upcoming competitions.

OK. Time for some skating updates.

It has been a busy start to 2017 for the Cypriot skaters.

(Apologies in advance if I have missed any competitions that have had Cypriot skaters attending. Feel free to correct me!)

EDU Sport Trophy: 04–07 January 2017

At the start of January, Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides finished 8th in Junior Ladies at the EDU Sport Trophy in Romania. She was 6th in the SP and 8th in the FS. Since this was the first International competition at Junior level where she had completed both segments, all her scores were new International PB's.

Also at the EDU Sport Trophy, Laura Farran (who I have now found out does not have an Irish background, as I previously suspected from her name) finished 17th in the single segment Basic Novice A Girls competition.

Sofia Trophy: 08–12 February 2017

Last week, three of the Cypriot skaters were competing at the Sofia Trophy in Bulgaria.

In Junior Ladies, Polina Ustinova finished 31st overall: 29th in the SP and 30]th in the FS.

Eliana Kalogirou finished 34th in both segments, as well as overall.

European Youth Olympic Festival: 13–15 February 2017

At the start of this week, Daniella became the first skater to represent Cyprus in the European Youth Olympic Festival, held in Turkey. (It's basically a Junior version of Europeans, but held within a multi-sport event). She was 21st in both segments, as well as overall.

I should add - as a lot of people were commenting in the event thread, the ice was terrible. So, between this and the high altitude, all the skaters were struggling. But, Daniella still managed to set new International PB's in all segments. So, fair play to her!

Olympic Hopes: 16–19 February 2017

The Olympic Hopes started yesterday in Romania. And there are a good number of Cypriot skaters entered.

Entries / Results Page

Junior Ladies: Polina Ustinova, Giorgia Isabella Secchi and Danae Hadjimitsi.
Basic Novice A Ladies: Laura Farran
Basic Novice B Ladies: Maria Eleni Loizides
Cubs Girls: Andrea Loizides

Daniella had been intending to compete here but, because she had to stay in Erzurum for the EYOF Closing Ceremony, she has been replaced by Polina.

The Cubs Girls FS was held yesterday (it was a single segment competition), and there is no sign of Andrea in the FS Results or the Protocols. Start Number #8 is missing, so I assume that was her and that she withdrew.

The Basic Novice A Girls FS is on at the moment. It was due to start at 10:00 CET (09:00 GMT), and Laura was the fourth to start. There is no Time Schedule or Live Scoring, so there is no way of knowing how things are going.

The Basic Novice B Girls FS starts at 15:22 CET (14:22 GMT), and Maria Eleni will be the 5th and final skater to start.

The Junior Ladies SP starts at 15:55 CET (14:55 GMT). Danae will be the skater that kicks off the competition. Giorgia will be the 5th skater to start, kicking off the second group, with Polina starting directly after her.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST GIRLS!!! :cheer:

Wow! The Cypriot skaters are being very busy in the run-up to Nationals!

Open Ice Mall Cup: 23–25 February 2017

Only a few days after their last competitions, the Cypriot girls were in action again, this time in Israel.

In Junior Ladies, Giorgia Isabella Secchi, Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides, and Danae Hadjimitsi finished in consecutive positions.

Daniella was 7th in both segments, as well as overall. All her scores were new International PB's.

Danae was 8th in both segments, as well as overall.

Giorgia was 9th in both segments, as well as overall.

I have already mentioned a few times elsewhere on the forum that I was in Cyprus for the first two weeks of September.

Well, what I didn’t tell you then is that I met three of the Cypriot skaters while I was on the island… and I filmed interviews with them!

Now, anybody that knows me well will know that although I love taking photos, I hate being in front of the camera. And they will also know that I also hate the sound of my voice (to the extent that I avoid talking on the phone like the plague).

So, this was a really big thing for me to do! But, I really want to help raise the profile of the girls internationally, so I put my insecurities to one side.

The three skaters that I met were all current or former national champions at various levels.

I had never interviewed anybody before. And, coupled with this, I had never even met any of the girls before.

The first interview I did was with Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides (2014 & 2015 Advanced Novice and 2016 & 2017 Junior Champion). I was so nervous. Even though I had been planning out everything I was going to say in meticulous detail for weeks, the nerves got to me and I forgot a lot of what I wanted to ask. Thankfully, Daniella is an old hand at getting interviewed, and was able to hold the whole thing together.

So, here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yJI16Rb58g

Enjoy!

And sorry that it has taken until now to upload the first of them. I have been really up to my eyes in trying to get caught up on things, and it doesn’t help that I am not very good at video editing. So, it is taking a bit longer to get the videos polished up than I had hoped.

Haven’t posted in this thread so far in 2018. So, since Nationals were held at the weekend, now would be a good time to put that right. However, before we get to that, I should update you on how the Cypriot skaters prepared for them.

Greek National Championships

Like she did 2 years ago, Daniella Ipsarides headed to Thessaloniki to take part in the Greek Championships as her preparation for the Cypriot Championships. And, like the last time, she won the Gold Medal.

I should warn you that I don’t know all the details about the Greek Championships yet. I have just seen photos of Daniella on the podium getting presented with her Medal and Trophy. And a lovely trophy it is too! ;)

:cheer: CONGRATULATIONS EVERYBODY!!! :cheer:

For information on how Nationals went, see the following thread in the Competition Forum:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?72527

There is something significant from Nationals that I feel should be highlighted here, though. The only person to have represented Cyprus internationally in Men’s skating, Nikita Vitranyuk, is now doing Ice Dance, where he is partnering Maria MILIYKOVA, a 12 year old from Moscow (fskate.ru Bio).

They were due to be guest competitors at the end of Nationals yesterday, but the Ice Dance page hasn't been updated. So I don't know if they did.

I hope they opt to represent Cyprus, as it would be great to see a new country competing in Ice Dance. And it would be nice to see Cyprus represented in another category, having only been represented in Singles up to now.

Last but not least, as this is St. George’s Day, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish a Happy 17th Birthday to Giorgia Isabella Sechi.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Having met her last year, I can say from personal experience that Giorgia is an absolutely lovely girl.

So, I want to send her all the best wishes from the bottom of my heart for this coming year.

Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides was on cookery programme "Mia Valítsa Géfseis" on Sigma TV this morning.

No, Daniella wasn't cooking. She was talking to presenter Christina Kyriakou at the My Mall rink, and then took her onto the ice and gave her a bit of a lesson.

Today's episode was all about Russia. And since figure skating is so popular in Russia, I guess that is how they worked this feature in.

Here is the episode on Sigma's website. Daniella's part starts at 32m 55s, and lasts to the end of the programme:

https://www.sigmatv.com/shows/miavalitsageusis/episodes/13084

I loved that a very seasonal support thingy was used.

Great to see Daniella getting exposure on national TV again.

And it is being conducted in English!!!

Watch it on Facebook - you can see them in the studio!

EDIT: Here is the link to the archived video of the interview on Saskia's Facebook page:

Thank you for the link! :thank: I watched on Facebook, and it was a really interesting interview, in perfect English from both. I thought the interviewer, although obviously not a Skating fan, had done some research, and asked great questions. The part about changing her coach because he was sweary and only allowed her to eat 1 apple in 2 days was eye opening! And great that the interviewer said "that's a starvation diet, good that you changed coach". It's such a shame there is no Zamboni in Cyprus, and she has to train in such poor conditions with snow on the ice, but all the best to Daniella for the future. :agree:

I went back and watched the interview again from the beginning, and posted the link on Twitter (where incidentally there is a Saskia Constantinou, but a different one in London). Good job I checked before tagging her!

It's such a pleasure to hear an interview with a teenager speaking so eloquently in what is not even her native language. Amazing! In marked contrast to some of our teenage skaters who sadly are nowhere near as eloquent in their mother tongue, and every second word is "Like".

I hope Daniella is successful in her A Levels and goes on to achieve her ambition of studying in America where she can resume her Skating career with hopefully better facilities and coaching. :agree:

Firstly, I have to start with an apology. With everything that has been happening this week, I missed a couple of important birthdays. :drama:

Danai Hadjimisti’s birthday was on Friday:

HAPPY BELATED 16th BIRTHDAY DANAI!!!

And Eliana Kalogirou’s birthday was on Saturday:

HAPPY BELATED 18th BIRTHDAY ELIANA!!!

I hope you both had enjoyable days, and that the coming year is a good one for both of you.

Sadly, the rumours are true. The Ice Dance partnership between Maria Miliukova and Nikita Vityranyuk has split up.

However, Nikita has already re-appeared with a new partner, Diana LEKHTMAN from Saint Petersburg.

Here is Diana’s fskate.ru Bio

Diana started this season with Fedor Sharonov (with whom she finished 3rd in the first stage of the St. Petersburg Cup), and finished this season with Roman Atoyar (with whom she finished 6th in the St. Petersburg Championships).

As with Maria and Nikita in last season’s Nationals, Diana and Nikita are entered as guest competitors in Advanced Novice Ice Dance.

As Diana has been competing for Russia this season, she is not currently eligible to compete for Cyprus. Hence why they are competing as guest skaters.

Given that we were expecting Maria and Nikita to move up to Juniors next season, it is surprising that Diana and Nikita are entered in Advanced Novice. But there are a couple of plausible explanations for this. Firstly, Diana’s Bio doesn’t give her exact DOB, so she might still be too young for Juniors. But the more likely explanation is that the timing of the Cypriot Championships means that there was simply not enough time to put together two Junior programmes.

I wonder what is happening with Maria. She is too good to be left on the sidelines.

The Cypriot National Championships were held over the weekend. For more see the dedicated thread:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?80783

Although she was not competing this year, Daniella was presented with an award at Nationals for everything she has achieved during her career.

She has put up a lovely post about it on both her personal Facebook profile and her Instagram page. Since the privacy settings on the Facebook version (which has more photos) is not set to public, here is the Instagram version:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpLL56Fcrr/

Fortunately, one of the additional photos that was in the Facebook version has been posted separately on Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpzCmwlukY/

Daniella also put a lovely close-up photo of the trophy and plaque up on her Facebook profile. So, hopefully she will put this photo up somewhere public as well.

As a fan, I really hope that this presentation is not a sign that Daniella’s sabbatical is becoming something more permanent. I would really miss her if it was.

But as a friend, I just want her to live the life she wants and be happy. :)

Daniella has just made the following announcement:

After 10 years of competitive figure skating until the level of junior ladies and after participating in the top international figure skating competitions like the ISU Junior Grand Prix and the European Youth Olympic Festival it is time for me to pass on my knowledge of this amazing sport to the younger generation. I am ready to teach the skills of figure skating to our future champions immediately. Those who are interested in this beautiful sport can contact me through, Instagram- @daniellaipsarides or through my personal Facebook account- Daniella Ipsarides or even by telephone!!It will be a great pleasure for me to help young beginner athletes to love our sport. Looking forward to see you on the Ice soon!!!!!

Source: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=445114032885726&id=149071529156646

Daniella has done so much to put Cyprus on the figure skating map. So, it is so good to hear that she is going to stay in the sport in a coaching capacity, and pass on the knowledge that she has acquired to the next generation.

I'm sure she'll be great at it.

All the best to her.

CaroLiza_fan

P.S. I hope you guys like my new avatar of Daniella and Giorgia. It is such a beautiful photo that as soon as I saw it, I just had to make it into an avatar!

Just wanted to take this opportunity wish a happy birthday to Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides.

:cheer: ΧΡΌΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΆ ΝΤΑΝΙΈΛΑ!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :hb: :points:

But it is not just any birthday - it is actually Daniella's 18th birthday. So, since it was a milestone birthday, I decided to make a Fan Video to mark it:

https://www.facebook.com/gordon.kells/videos/10162479670230538/

Unfortunately, copyright claims against the music mean that the whole video got blocked when I uploaded it to YouTube, and the music got muted when I uploaded it to Facebook.

So, the best I can come up with is to suggest that you watch the video on the Facebook link above while listening to the music on this video (I don’t know why this and a handful of videos are allowed and mine wasn’t):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLHq8V1V-aw

The story as to how I chose this song is very interesting. All the videos I make use music that involves somebody from Northern Ireland. But, although it is by the most famous singer from Northern Ireland, I didn’t actually know this particular song. Then, about 6 months ago, a friend of mine posted a comment on Twitter saying that she had recently heard this song for the first time in many years, and would love to see somebody skating to it. And since this woman is originally from Cyprus and has taken a bit of a shine to Daniella, I thought it would be appropriate to use it for this video.

All the best to Daniella with whatever the future holds.

CaroLiza_fan

It's been a while since I posted in this thread, but there are finally some things to post about.

Firstly, today is the 19th birthday of Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides.

:cheer: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIELLA!!! :cheer:

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

I hope she has had an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one for her.

Now, I didn't find this out until today, but Daniella is one of the European Young Olympic Ambassadors for this year's European Youth Olympic Festival in Vuokatti, Finland. The EYOF was originally supposed to be happening this week, but was postponed until December due to you-know-what.

Other figure skaters who are part of the 2021 EYOA programme are Pairs Skater Anna Duskova from the Czech Republic, Ladies Singles Skater Elisavet Voulgari from Greece, and Men's Singles Skater Jorik Hendrickx from Belgium.

Here is an interview Daniella did for the EYOF website:

She gives some interesting answers.

And for our Greek speakers, here are a couple of stories from a few weeks ago:

Sorry that I am only finding these now. It's amazing how much news you miss when you don't look at your Facebook news feed for about 6 months!

After quite a lengthy break, we finally have Cypriot skaters back in action over the next few weeks.

This week, Angelina and Ilia will be competing at the Ludmila Mikhailovskaya Dance Trophy in Odessa, the Ukraine. The event started today for the Novice Dancers, but the Junior and Senior Ice Dance competitions will begin tomorrow. I will post more details about when Angelina and Ilya will be skating in their own Fan Fest thread tomorrow, as the livestream link for Day 2 is not known yet.

And next week, Emilea is entered for the Tallink Hotels Cup in Tallinn, Estonia. The Short Programme is due to be held on Saturday 20th, and the Free Skate on Sunday 21st. I will post more details in this thread nearer the time.

And the following week, Emilea is also entered for the Challenge Cup in The Hague, the Netherlands.

No word yet about when we'll next see Marilena or any of the other team members in action.

And no word either about when Nationals will be held. (Given how strict the restrictions in Cyprus are, I can't see it happening this season).
