I have to be honest, I only know one Fountains Of Wayne song. But what a song it is! And since the story is based on an event from Schlesinger's childhood, it makes an appropriate tribute:

Although I had heard the song lots of times back in the day, today was the first time I had seen the video for it. Suffice to say, it is very suggestive. So, if you are able to go to work / school, my advice is not to watch it there.

In honour of the film's leading lady Honor Blackman, who died on Monday:

Shirley Bassey - "Goldfinger"

While reading the truncated teletext version of the BBC article about Blackman's death, I got a surprise when it said that she and her Avengers co-star Patrick MacNee had a single:

Patrick MacNee and Honor Blackman - "Kinky Boots"

I never would have imagined Honor Blackman recording a novelty song! So, that was eye-opening!

A great actress, who will be sadly missed.

My thoughts are with her family, friends, and fans.

Its a great story and lead to changes in maritime laws. I have been in 35 ft seas and high winds and the Capt had to slow our ship, one of the fastest cruise ships in the world, way down to keep her in one piece.
Lake Superior is very beautiful, espeically the North shore...hard to tell from an inland sea....I have been there many times.

I saw the articles about her being gone and suddenly I felt very old.....I loved the original Bond films and read all the books when I was a kid....
 
Any space music fans out there? Kitaro? Vangelis? Steve Roach? John Serrie? My wife and I used to listen to a NPR program called, "Music from the hearts of Space" with Stephen Hill and record the shows on cassette. We still play them before we go to sleep. it is the longest running radio show of its type. Now of course we can buy the digital music and put it on a thumb drive and play it but I still play the cassettes. We also like celtic music.

I loved the original Bond films too. A lot more than then new ones. To be honest, I think the series has really lost it's way since they decided to re-make "Casino Royale". Nothing against Daniel Craig - he's a great actor. But the whole essence of the new films just doesn't feel right to me.

I LOVE Vangelis. I really wish we would see more of their music used in figure skating programmes. And I have said so plenty of times in various places on this forum.

But, I really can't believe that it is 4 ½ years since I last posted about Vangelis in this thread! :shocked: :drama: Here is what I wrote then:

I :luv17: "Conquest of Paradise!" Never saw the movie "1492," but I was so drawn to this music ever since Elvis Stojko skated to it! I also loved the program Hartshorn & Sweiding skated to it, & then "my" Todd skated to it! I bought the soundtrack of "1492" because of skating! I subsequently bought another Vangelis CD compilation.

Sorry to be the bearer of more bad news.

Read this morning that John Prine had died from Covid-19.

I must confess that I am not a country music fan. But, there is a radio programme that I listen to regularly, and there were a few songs by John Prine that the presenter would play every now and again. One of them in particular I really liked, because the story told in the lyrics was very entertaining. But, when I wanted to post about his death this morning, I just could not remember the name of the song! :drama:

Fortunately, I have now. So, here it is:

Thats a nice piece of music! A bit sad right now....I try and stay away from sad music in the winter and during Pandemics....The fiddle players on the "Celtic Woman" series rock. Lots of folk who write music for movies do a great job....so many....Ennio Morricone

Over the past week or so, I have been spending the afternoons watching films. Most of them have been from the 40's and 50's, but there have been a few from the 60's and 70's too.

Anyway, by sheer coincidence, the films I have watched the past 2 days have both starred Omar Shariff. Yesterday, he was with Barbara Streisand in the musical "Funny Girl". Very enjoyable film (even if I didn't make out everything that Barbara was saying because she was talking too fast). Rather than pick the song that everybody knows ("Don't Rain On My Parade"), I will pick one of the less well known songs:

I admit, I chose this song largely because of the beautiful costumes and setting. :love:

And today he was with Julie Andrews in "The Tamarind Seed". Right from the start, it reminded me of the classic James Bond films that we were discussing yesterday. Which was probably helped by the fact that John Barry did the soundtrack for this film too!

Here is a piece that I particularly liked:

Just in case you think there is something wrong with your computer when you play that video, there isn't. Whoever made the video mustn't have realised that the song was only 2m 23s long.

Today's film was "Affair in Trinidad", starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I found the channel that I have been watching most of these films on, and in that time they have been showing quite a lot of Rita Hayworth films. So far, I have watched:

  • "Cover Girl" (1944)
  • "The Lady From Shanghai" (1947)
  • "Affair In Trinidad" (1952)
  • "Salome" (1953)

In "The Lady From Shanghai", her soon-to-be ex-husband Orson Welles was playing an Irish sailor that falls for her. And all I could think was "don't worry - you're the only Irishman to fall for her charms!" ;) :biggrin:

Come on. She was gorgeous! :love: :love: :love:

Anyway, in most of the films I have seen, Rita has had at least one dance number. But, in today's film, her character was also singing while she was dancing. Except, it wasn't actually Rita singing - it was Jo Ann Greer.

So, here is the second song that was in the film:

I'll have to check when there is another Rita Hayworth film on. Can't wait to see her again! :)
