1 in 3 Canadians do not know 2010 Winter Games to be held in Canada

Is this just propaganda from the usual mouth piece 'People's Daily' or is this for real? Can somebody help us out?

One in three Canadians do not know the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Vancouver, Canada in 2010, said a poll released on Thursday.
The poll, which was conducted by Decima Research for the federal government, revealed that in Ontario, only 60 percent of people correctly identified the location, and in Quebec 43 percent, Alberta 68 percent and British Columbia, 97 percent.

The poll came out on the same day when Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan was in Toronto promoting the Games.

However, Sullivan said he is confident the games will be a boost for Canada and that they will bring "us together as a country."

No, not surprising. British Columbia is pretty much ignored by the rest of Canada. Quebec hardly even knows we exist - so it's not too far fetched. Alberta acknowledges us because we are their neighbours. Ontario is smug. British Columbians should know about it - it's being held in our back yard. Although not everyone here is in favour of the Games. We think it is just an overpriced two week party for the government to benefit from. I am sure by the time 2010 comes around the rest of Canada will be aware that BC is hosting the games.

It doesn't surprise me at all. Per another recent survey, some ridiculous percentage of Britons thought Sherlock Holmes was a real person and Winston Churchill was a fictional character :sheesh:

On the bright side ... it's nice to know that my own country (US) isn't the only one with these issues.

Ladskater you sound so bitter. I do not feel that way about BC; in fact I lived there for almost ten years and loved it. I would love to go to the Olympics and it has always been my dream but it is just too expensive to spend on the Olympics and not on my kids education which is much more important.

You may have the impression that the majority of people in Canada ignore people from BC but I am not one of them. I have lived all over the country and have been in every province and all are unique in their own way.

Vancouver will give a wonderful Olympics so please just think about the positives and enjoy some of the events. Most of us can't.

PS I would move back to BC in a heartbeat if I didn't equally love the east coast; which is where I now reside.

Ladskater ... BC is beautiful, I lived there for a couple of years and have friends living there now who I go to visit any chance I can get. I know many people who feel the same way I do about BC, so I'm not sure where you are coming from.

I think that the people who don't know that the 2010 Olympics are in Vancouver aren't sports fans. A lot of people I work with, really don't care about sports, mainly because they hear athletes (not all of them-professional hockey players, baseball, etc and it's only a few of them) complain in the news how they don't make enough money when you can see they are making about million per season. It makes people mad when they are just scraping by with $9 bucks an hour.

Anyways, back on topic Olympics even if people do know it's here they won't be able to get anywhere near it, due to financial strains, time strains etc

I would love to go but it's not worth being not able to pay for my rent, car, bills I will watch it and cheer from the couch. Unless I win the lottery

Could be that the focus right now is on Beijing. maybe interest will rise after the summer is over and the winter games are next on the list?

The poster who said people don't care/think about BC...................fear not! I lived there for two years & thought it was great except for the traffic. We went to 2001 worlds and it was fantastic!! Excellent venue, beautifull weather, lots of great walks through Stanley Park, excellent restaurants................and the list goes on.

It's mostly to do with the Government. We here in BC always feel Government spending mostly goes to Quebec and Ontario. We here in the West (may even include Alberta) feel somewhat ignored by Ottawa. Also we have the Rocky Mountains that seperate us from the rest of Canada so feel somewhat isolated out here.

I know not everyone in Canada feels that way about BC. In fact, many Easterners (especially from the prairies) end up moving here to escape the brutal winters. We have a lot of ex Winnipegers living here!!

I hope no one too my comments too seriously. I was just using my West Coast sense of humour for a rather silly post. Of course, Canadians are aware that the Olympics are happening here in Vancouver in 2010!! The article is just plain silly.

Perhaps it's less about regions not caring about one another, but more about...something even sadder about the Olympic movement--

I think the Olympic movement may be losing steam, especially the winter Olympics. Winter Olympics used to have a certain magic to it, due in part to figure skating. But with the skating scandals, the winter Olympics seemed to have lost some of its lustre.

It seems the only one thinking BC is out there on its own is Lad ... the rest of us know about and love BC.

I get why the people in Alaska would feel that way though ... seperated by another country from the rest of the States, it's probably understandable. Anyone I know who's been to Alaska says there is no comparing its beauty!!!

It's not so much that we feel isolated, you ask most Alaskans (not transplants but those of us who have either been born here or lived most of our lives here) and we love the fact that we're not connected...

it's teh general misconceptions that tick us all off lol
