2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

It is certainly possible for several judges to try to influence the score. What if several judges give the highest score ? Do they all get dropped? I don't think so, but correct me if I am wrong. And what is the probability of two identical high
scores getting dropped in the random drop? And then there is the technical controller, who can call or not call ur's or edges and determine levels. I'm not saying it happened here, but it is possible to try to tilt the scores in favor of a skater if several judges work together.

What IF is not enough, that is suggestion, suspicion, you have to give PROOF that all those judges were bribed. If ALL the judges gave the same high marks, does it cross your mind that perhaps Sotnikova deserved them??:rolleye:

The tech controller gave the call for some but not others, like in any international competitions. Kim had mistakes that weren't called out too. I let all of these slide, because you won't ever get a 100% correct assessment. The question here is did anything akin to cheating/bribery take place. Was Kim's skate superior to Sotnikova? How so? Proof?

Let's be fair here, anyone who believes firmly that Kim should win can do the same as those who presented how Sotnikova won, ie. show a breakdown, frame by frame, to bring justice to Kim. Otherwise, allegations without proof is UNJUST to Sotnikova.

Not one person in skating I've talked to said that's the way (the result) should have gone,” former US Olympic figure skating coach Audrey Weisiger told USA Today
That's mostly an insubstantial article that seems intended as a rabble-rouser... but the quotes from the IOC spokesman caught my eye:

First, "I think we need a little bit of a reality check here". Is that what the article is referring to at the start, where it says "the IOC has called for reality check"? Because I think they took liberties with their interpretation there...

Secondly, "There had been no complaint by any athlete or team to his knowledge, he said. If there were, it would be reviewed by the sport's top body in the normal way."

So no skater/team/federation lodged an official complaint (yet), to trigger an investigation?

Is this not surprising? I am surprised. Who is the sport's "top body" that would perform such a "review"? Is it the IOC? Because I think IOC is perhaps the only organisation that has any kind of power over the ISU (Ultimately, don't they have the power to kick figure skating out of the Olympics for one scandal too many?).

Anyway, you'd think if there were any real grounds for suspicion, there would be an official complaint to force an investigation.

I just rewatched Yuna and Adelina and tried to be as dispassionate as possible about it. The result was, I still felt incredible intensity in Yuna's performance (nothing muted or cold; cool, yes, but that just makes her stand out. And made her Mona Lisa smiles stand out even more!). Even the passages of stroking seemed suited to the passages in music.

And I see that Adelina reflected technical brilliance, but I also felt distracted by her flailing of arms and disconnection to music at places. The program was that of a... well, excited 17-year old. It didn't feel magical.

By this I absolutely do not take a stand in who should have won.

The difference in their BV was 4 points. I'm not expert enough to say if that was reachable by yesterday's performances?

Sigh. Am I a Yuna uber? I would like to think, not any uber. Just a bit sad that there are so incomparable aspects to this lovely lovely sport. Such as the general difference between a grown-up and a teenager... Maturity isn't a component, but those performances are usually what I remember from the competitions. (And now of course I noticed that Yuna was teenager in Vancouver too, and still I felt the magic there. So I guess I'm contradicting myself. :)

In my opinion, no matter who won the medals at Sochi, there would still be controversy. It's the name of the game. This is one of the reasons why they should take figure skating out of the Olympics, it a sport that has too many controversies in judging. The Olympics is supposed to bring nations together and figure skating is a sport that divides.

About 20 minutes ago, Korea Olympic Committee anounced they will send a protest letter to IOC.
They said they will protest strongly and are now preparing for protest lestter.

Stupid Korean Assc's. Don't they know their place is in silence? Never helps 'till the end.
They didn't bother when their skaters needed a practice rink for this Olympics.

Can you provide a link or something confirming this?

Regardless - I hope they do this. I think an official investigation would be a good thing, and would increase the chances of changes being made eg. I'd like to see them remove anonymity, have some accountability for the scores given, etc.

Mind you, whichever way the findings go... I'm sure one side will remain unconvinced by them :-P

well, at this time, they are doing right thing.
No. Their strategic place at the moment is in silence. Either that, or bring out a godly logical presentation that would instantaneously convince the world. Protest is for the media and audience. They just do it because it doesn't cost them a penny and makes them stand out, ride along Yuna's fame.

Oh God. Didn't you see the pictures in this article? Why Yunas in that picture is wider than Sotnikova? Yuna's jump was higher and longer. Also she has speed! Everybody knew that Adelina wouldn't win this competition when both deliver clean programs. I don't care about just one article. Actually this article is just ridiculous and didn't explain why Adelina got good score. Just pretended to explain about this weird resault. I'd rather beleive what Katarina or Dick or other figure skaters said. I was a figure skating fan over ten years. There were a lot of disappointing moments but it is the worst.
Who is everyone. Don't speak for people you don't know. I certainly didn't count her out. Not that dumb enough to so that. A clean sotniloca has always been a gold medal threat. Sotnikova is not Tuktysheva. She is a well rounded skater and technically one of if not the best competing right now.

What a sorry lot.
Why can't they just take the results with grace as Yuna obviously did.

The Russian’s combination of big jumps, speed and power made the case for building that margin in the technical marks, and it led the judges to get carried away so she didn’t lose it on the component scores.

Browning saw clear explanations for why Sotnikova's technical marks were 5.85 points better than Kim's, including the South Korean getting reduced base values on a spin and a footwork sequence. What perplexed him was how Sotnikova's component scores Thursday could be nearly nine points higher than her average component scores in four previous competitions this season.

"You don't learn to skate that much better that fast," Browning said."

BOOM. That is the whole controversy in a nutshell. Thank you Phil.

Why do they keep changing the required number? Yesterday, when I looked at the site the number who signed was already 3 times the required number, which , then, was around 200,000. Now the required number is over a million.

Now the number that has to be reached is 3 million :( they need 1,3 million signatures more...

Why would they let anyone who had been caught trying to fix the results in the past anywhere near a judging panel for the Olympics? Just asking for trouble.

Figure skating is similar to gymnastics, another sport I love, in that often the marks are rather contentious.
