2015 Nebelhorn Trophy General Chat

My Ice Dance report

The "Dark Eyes" performance by Madison Chock and Evan Bates, scored high and granted them the first place after the SD (67.74).
Every element except their partial step sequence received a level four modification and high GOE´s (+2), with their PC´s being in the high 8s and 9s.
It was their first skate this season, therefore a remarkable result for the Americans as Madison mentioned.
"We are really excited to be here and able to compete" "its always a bit nerve wrecking, after such a long and busy summer".

Interesting is, that "Dark Eye´s" by André Rieu wasn't their first choice of music, but something they added in the progress of their pre-season.
"This is our second choice of music, Chock said, we were hoping that this "Dark Eyes" music would stand out."

Standing out, it certainly did, not only music wise. A very fiery, yet mysterious program, greatly portrait by both dancers.

Trailing behind by a bit more than seven points are Alexandra Paul and Michell Islam. The Canadians performed a charming program that didn't leave any eye dry. A while ago, both left their trainings group in Detroit to work with Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrick Lauzon in Montreal.
Paul also mentioned, that they were interested in a different approach this season.
"We worked hard all summer and wanted to show it today. We wanted to do a ballet type of program this season."

And what a wonderful ballet it was. You could see, no feel their intentions, it was a joy to watch, especially Alexandra had a great posture on the ice. A fast and driving program which was rewarded with 60.52 points and an average of 7,6 in GOE and two level 4´s for their rotational lift and second Ravensburger Waltz.

The Ravensburger Waltz by the way, originates from Ravensburg, a small city just 80 miles north from Oberstdorf. Found was the element by Angelika and Erich Buck in the early 1970s.

Third came the Turks Alisa Agafanova and Alper Ucar with 55.26. The pair seemed very happy, but not only because of their result today
.
"We are here in Oberstdorf for the 4th time and we like it here very much", Alisa said.

She also mentioned that they got a little surprise this week.

"We are so happy that we got invited to our first Grand Prix this week, and want to say thanks to the French Federation and its president very much."

The sympathetic Turks with the huge smiles averaged 6.6 in their PC´s and received three level 4 modifications, but also made history with their Trophée Eric Bombard assignment, as Alisa added.

"We waited for a long time, and it is the first Grand Prix assigned to skaters from Turkey".

4th with 54.34 are Anastasia & Colin, followed by Natalia and Maksim from Poland. Both pairs had lovely performances and are still in range for the third spot on the podium.

Other notable performances were by the French Dancers Lorenza & Pierre (53.42) with all their little emotes and her gorgeous flower dress, and the second, very fresh & energetic Canadian pair, which came 7th with 52.44.

Last but not least, lots of respect to Katharina Müller who picked up an injury this morning and therefore was unable to practice with her Partner Tim Dieck and still came 9th while still being slightly handicapped.

Thanks to all the participants for a great Short Dance! The final dance will be on Saturday 14.00 CET.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Max's program. Phillip Mills is a Genius for giving Max a Masculine yet, Artistic Program. Bravo!

Here's my question. Has Mr. Mills ever choreographed for more than 1 Senior Male skater? If so, I'd love to see Keegan Messing give him a call. Especially now that Keegan skates for Canada, it wouldn't really be a conflict on a National level.

Did everybody forget to tell Madison Chock the paso doble is out and this is a waltz year?? Somebody please tell her to stop with the fierce, sexy, feisty movements and portrait some soft, ethereal, charming waltzy dance like every other team is doing, or is this just as far as her emotive range goes??

OK rant over. I actually love Chock divaness but I hate it when there's thematic fraud in the OD/SD. And that's not even mentioning the "odd" music choice.

Phillip Mills also choreographed for Tatsuki Machida.

They're dancing to a Gypsy/Waltzy music 'Dark Eyes' hence "the fierce, sexy, feisty movements movements". Notice their gypsy costumes....

You clearly don't know anything about Russian Gypsies.

I know Dark Eyes, which skating fan doesn't ?, but my point is waltzy its not what is usually used to describe it. The tempo may save them but this is like DomShabs in 2009 or IlynykKatsalapov in 2013 again. An attempt to still get by with what you do best when the theme of the year doesn't really suit you.

Most likely true, which is fine because russian gypsie music is not the pattern or one of the rhythms for this year. You also clearly didn't have anything to add besides trying to be snarky.

Thanks to Alex D for all his contributions to this thread.

And thanks to Doris for your usual (but not-to-be-taken-for-granted) efforts to keep the first page of the thread updated with Starting Orders and so much more.
And for adding so many links to the Videos thread.

Phillip Mills also choreographed for Tatsuki Machida.

I think mrrice's question is about choreography for the same season -- i.e., whether Phillip has choreographed for more than one Senior man for the same season?

Machida had retired before Phillip choreographed Max's programs for this season (which he first skated at WTT).

But for last season, Phillip choreographed for Daisuke Murakami as well as Machida.

Congratulations again to Max and Phillip :yay:.

I have to agree with SamuraiKike. Though it's fine to have a 'sensual sexy etc' or dark, mysterious waltz, imo it's VERY 'sensual sexy etc' and not very waltzy at all. Despite the music, which I love. It does indeed make them look like they have only one side to portray and it turns me off. It would've been nice to see them have a more emotionally versatile program. Will have to wait for the FD, although I'm probably gonna be disappointed because it is gonna be made overdramatic by diva Chock (and I like divas!). I hope I'm wrong.

By that same reasoning you could argue that Paul & Islam are trying to shove a ballet into a waltz. And how many other programs are doing all they can to disguise that they are skating a waltz? This year it seems you either skate a trad waltz to some variant of Cinderella or you do all you can to pretend you aren't skating a waltz pattern at all.

I just pointed out the fact that you can't understand their interpretation because of your ignorance, not because her 'emotive range' is poor. There was nothing snarky about it, at least I didn't try to be snarky.
And yes, originally 'Dark eyes' is a romance song and not a waltz. However, the song is based on Hermann's 'Valse Hommage', which is PERFECTLY a waltz.

This year it seems you either skate a trad waltz to some variant of Cinderella or you do all you can to pretend you aren't skating a waltz pattern at all.

Quick update regarding Mirai. She worked a lot on her 3A this morning, I didnt see a clean one, but was told she will go for it in SP.

I love how Alaine Chartrand does her Lutz, such a clean outside edge. In General nice SS by the Canadian.

Well that's silly. With this point accumulating based system I would think the ISU would want to give skaters every opportunity to use their highest scoring elements, but I suppose it might be something about still having restrictions in the short that judges can more directly compare. However if they really wanted to do that, I'd say they should have all the teams doing double twists with highly specific features necessary to hit for full credit.
Might be...

But why are single skaters allowed to show Quads in the short, then? And why can women Show 3A in the short after 2010?

Sometimes i think there is a big power in the backround wich wants to keep pair skating conservative. And of course pairs skating is one of the most political kinds of sport on this planet.

Thanks, Alex. All your remarks and 'insider' information are extremely appreciated. ;)

I think it could be more about safety really =/
Look how high the pair quads are compared to single - so a fall is way more dangerous. I kinda understand the conservative part, as a pair splatfest with everybody doing quads will not be nice.
