2015 Nebelhorn Trophy General Chat

Oh weird. So they could theoretically dump all the gold medalists for their favorite teams?

I can't imagine them doing that, obviously they want to make the audience happy and that wouldn't be a good way to do it...lol. Generally it's the medalists, typically the 4th placers, and whoever else they have time for & like. I think it also depends what the skaters have prepared. Kailani had a fun ex program at 4CC, so maybe they liked that. Julian is a surprise, but it's nice that they gave him the opportunity.

That makes sense. I've watched a grand total of... half an exhibition, so it's the part of competitions I'm still really clueless about. I'm glad that some of the lower-placed skaters get chances to skate too, since an exhibition with just the 1-3 placing skaters would be quite short.

They're pretty terrible for the most part, but it's fun to see skaters perform with abandon and what they actually like.

And you occasionally get a golden jewel that stands out.

Haha! That's actually why I've only watched a half of one before. I started it and thought I was going to be bored out of my mind. But I would like to see some of the skaters let their hair... literally and figuratively... so I'll stick it out for awhile and see if it's worth it.

I've always had a theory that increasing the geographic diversity of skaters invited to perform in the exhibition is another goal of the LOCs.

So IMO, another benefit to inviting Kailani and Julian is for Australia and Malaysia to be represented.

Wow Courtney's got a really great scratch spin. Why aren't we seeing that in competition?? On the one hand I get why they create all the features in spins to levels can be awarded, but I do wish the requirements weren't so tight so we could just enjoy a lovely held position. Maybe that could somehow be a feature? IDK

When you said "pretty terrible" I immediately thought of Javier's aerobics class routine at the Olympic gala (which I remember because I watched the gala about 95 times when it was still available on the live extra app).

That is one of only two events I've ever seen enough times to memorize what everyone skates to, LOL. The other is the 2013 Skate America short dance.

Old man Menshov with 'Radioactive'.

I got excited when the commentator named the song, but was then sad when it wasn't the Kings of Leon one. Imagine Dragons is good, I guess. :)

Yeah I really feel like the art of the exhibition went out the window along with COP. There were some spectacular exhibitions in the 90s and early 2000s. Occasionally you a gem like Mirai's On Golden Pond or Joshua's To Build a Home, but generally these days I don't even bother to watch exhibitions.

Brooklee and Kailani were just

Team Australia is so lucky to have these two gorgeous ladies with their very gorgeous programs!

I agree with this. They have both improved a lot since last season, and Brooklee has managed to do so while attending a very rigorous university. They had some of the best spins of all the ladies tonight, love how Kalani manages to be very upbeat and energetic while also graceful and balletic. I didn't realize she only turned 17 recently. Lots of potential there! It would be great if somehow Australia could manage to get 2 ladies spots at Worlds at somepoint. I know reputation judging makes it harder but these two ladies are both special.

Oh man. The Sochi gala was... :ohwell: (You can still look it up on YouTube by the way in the US.)

Javi's routine (which he used for almost 3 years) was surprisingly one of the highlights in Sochi.

Skate America short dance in 2013 was pretty fascinating with Tanith commentating and obviously being very pro any Marina teams. :) Love the drama.

Excellent LP for Mirai. I liked the meaningful and classical movements and expression. This vehicle should serve her well. She should be encouraged that she is heading in the right direction. Now if she can just keep her head screwed on straight and put forth two strong programs maybe the judges will start cutting her a little slack.

Surprisingly, there haven't been many (if any) Beyonce programs since the ISU allowed lyrics. Thank you lordy-- I like her first album, but everything after is just...

Also... WTH. That lift with James spinning Cipres oh his head... WHAT.

That's their trademark lift, haven't you seen it before? :)
