2016-17 Russian Qualifiers and other events

Some really nice pair skating in Samara.

A lovely skate from E/K to score 65+. It was very well performed, they are two elegant skaters. Hopefully they will get a Senior B or two, it would be interesting to see how they would score, I'm guessing around 60. I also enjoyed Z/B. I first saw them at last years Junior Nationals where they skated a nice short but faded in the long. They did sbs 3 loop, he doubled, hers was good. Also the lift was a bit laboured, I think they may have got nothing for it as they are a distant second. Have they aged out of juniors?

A very strong skate for C/M in the juniors, I am surprised that they were not selected for the JGP. Never heard of the pair in second but they were nice to watch. B/K were very impressive in Saransk but today she stepped out of the 2A and fell on the throw, still they are in touch.

Does anyone know if Biryukova/Filonov are still skating? I was impressed with them last year but haven't seen anything this season yet.

That is what I am hoping too. I would expect them to get atleast one Challenger Series competition since they are one of the national reserve team.

I also enjoyed Z/B. I first saw them at last years Junior Nationals where they skated a nice short but faded in the long. They did sbs 3 loop, he doubled, hers was good. She becomes eligible only next season. If they stay together they can skate 2 seasons in juniors but I really hope they won't because he is really unstable jumper. She needs someone better because she is really good and with a right partner she can be great.

Osipova/ Gallimov won... wonder why they missed JGP assignments ? They won with a total of 160.94 points
I like them, they remind me of a young and gangly Kavaguti / Smirnov especially her technique !!

I think they have a chance to win a medal in junior nationals with Borisova / Sopot struggling this season.

Borisova and Sopot have been struggling because she had meningitis in August and therefore lost a lot of training time. Junior nationals will be in January, so there is a good chance that they will catch up in the next three months.

I like Osipova/Galliamov. They have pretty decent elements, but they should work on their basic skating to improve their second mark. In comparison with the top Russian junior pairs O/G are still a bit careful. They need to put in a bit confidence and fight into their skating. Speed and power. The reason why they didn't get JGP event is probably because they were only created this summer. Last season Osipova and Galliamov had different partners. So the federation probably did not expect them to gel so fast and get the elements so quickly.

S/K still have a lot to do. No power in the blues section, a long way apart in hold, twizzles more controlled but too slow, and crawling through the non touching section. She was reminding me of Bobrova circa 2011/12, which is an improvement on previous years, but not going to cut it if they want to advance internationally (or even stay ahead of S/B, who look much better this year, and have probably their best ever programs).

For now, B/S are clearly the leading couple. Just waiting to see where I/Z will fit in!

A bit about 2nd stage of Russian Cup

- Both pairs' competitions looks very interesting. It will be especially interesting to see how Borisova/Sopot and Osipova/Gallyamov will do. In senior there will be a debut of Kudryavtseva/Zakroev. Bazarova/Debutat, Efimova/Korovin and Zhuk/Britkov will also skate here.

- Junior ladies' competition looks very interesting as allways: Samodurova, Panenkova, Trusova, Kurakova, Ryabova and so on. Fedichkina will skate in seniors.

kind of slow and heavy on the non pause step sequences.... If that got 70+ then Zahorski / Guerreiro could have scored higher here.
