2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

I saw Shaelene and Vladimir in August at IDE. They are special. They appear to be on the same wavelength - their skating matches each other well. I don't like making comparisons because each skater and team is unique but I was kind of reminded of how Tessa & Scott are on the same page when they skate. I hope Carol and Juris take good care of them.

Thanks! Was hunting for this on the CO site...but wasn't obvious where they'd put it. However, the link is only giving me the pre-novice dance.

There are 4 pages.. scroll down when the PDF opens up (if on computer). If on mobile device it may be swipe up or swipe left to change pages

From the Golden Spin of Zagreb thread:

Messing, Nadeau, and Sadovsky are on the entry list for men.

Thx, CdnSk8Fan :). Your link works fine for me -- gives me the 4-page PDF on my laptop.

well, ice coverage, that must be new entries... and i am delighted... when i checked for the later challenger series, no canadians were signed up... hope to see nadeau fit there... and great for keegan to get another chance after the laces disaster at ACI... and of course, Roman needs as much competing as available... he is getting a nice grip on his 3A and 4S...

Go boys!

I too am delighted for the three men.

But your tone is coming across as if I were impertinent to share new information.

Call me crazy, but I thought the point of this thread is to share new information. (ETA: At least one of the major points.)

congrats to the guys. SC should have sent Tamura there as well. She now has a 3Z-3T and a 2A half loop 3S in her arsenal ( did both in senior ladies at BC sectionals ). Chances are very good she'll get the Skate Canada TBA next season slot anyway as the other ladies with senior B's this year did not prove themselves worthy.

LOL :)

nope... my tone is of surprise. I am glad you shared these news. I checked actually quite recently and no Canadians were signed up to ANY of the late challengers... as many people mentioned, we all hoped Kevin would get an outing as well... but apparently the deadline to enter has passed a long time ago... so i am surprised ;)

I think you should know by now that I am happy to read news about Canadian skaters

I agree... quite impressed with Sarah and Emily. I hope they work on skating basics until next season.

Well, 4everchan ;) .... what I should know by now also is that you sometimes have an odd (IMO) way with words.

I had forgotten, but going forward, I will try to remember to make allowances.

BTW, good luck to Patrick and the others in China this week :yay:.

English is a language i learned after learning two other languages... so you will excuse me if it is perhaps at times coming off odd to you.. especially since I often don't edit, or write from my phone or while watching milos playing against novak like right now ;)

Perhaps you are extra sensitive to how I express myself as I usually can get my points across with others ;) I will make allowances too for your sensitivity.

Thanks for sharing those surprising but happy news once again

I'm usually critical of Skate Canada but I have to commend them for these assignments. Nic and Roman need to get their senior TES minimums in case they get assigned to Worlds or 4CCs. Nic also needs competition experience. Keegan needs another chance with better laces.

Sarah Tamura is making strides as Ted Barton hinted during the JGP and that's good. Still a bit unsure of Joanne's ideas in regards to improving the PCS for her kids. As we're seeing in Quebec and Central Ontario at the novice level other young girls are catching up. Part of me is also hoping Megan Yim gets her TES in order. I think she's one of the most naturally artistic ladies skaters in Canada.

As a parent of a skater I was always wondering what is Skate Canada’s criteria for selecting skaters for international competitions. I have searched Skate Canada website but could not find any criteria’s there. It really looks like someone is just picking whoever they want.

There are many examples where skaters were sent to International competitions based on the club they represent but not their personal performance and their bests results. For example, Zachary Daleman who is being sent to Open d’Andorra was the 10th on Summer Skate, was near the last place on last year Canadians and was 4th on Central Ontario Sectionals with the results of 141.82.

Eri NISHIMURA  was sent to The International Cup of Nice came 22nd with the result of 103.80.

I feel selections like these cannot be happening in a respected organization because it doesn’t seem fare to other skaters. I think it is great that these skaters are able to develop their skills but I believe there should be a accountability in the selection process so all Skate Canada members could see a firm selection criteria.

Hello Elizabeth! Thanks for joining us on this thread and discussing this issue with us. And for bringing attention to the fact that Zach has been assigned to Open D'Andorra.

I found this link on Skate Canada's international assignments page: https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/u...17-Senior-International-Selection-Process.pdf

So we do have some criteria for senior level athletes.

I also found this document for the 2015/2016 season which mentions both junior and senior benchmarks: http://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/2015-2016-Selection-Criteria.pdf

Neither Eri nor Zach have met the requirements mentioned here.

Do you or someone else here happen to know if these assignments were made due to Skate Canada's desire to get these skaters international experience, or did the skaters/their coaches approach Skate Canada and express the desire to compete and come up with their own funding, etc?

You've raised another good point - where are the requirements for junior assignments this year? Or does Skate Canada realize that it's entering a phase with novice skaters who are better than juniors and juniors who are pushing the boundaries of the senior ranks? Bit of a mess we're in.

Uhm, ice coverage.....I can back up the really pleased, but also fairly stunned reaction. Looks like 4everchan beat me to the "Wait! What?"

I've also been checking the entry list updates regularly for the post Finlandia Challengers hoping to see Skate Canada take advantage of the opportunities. Assumed they were close to final.....so thanks for the catch! Especially as there is still no mention of this on the SC International Assignmnents page... :agree:

While I have no expectations of anyone at Skate Canada reading this thread, a part of my back brain is wondering if someone heard all our kvetching about the the lack of entries in the late Challengers....:hap93:

Uhm, TGee ;) ... I can assure you that pleasant surprise was exactly what I myself felt when I saw the Canadian men listed as Golden Spin entries.
No need to "back up" what was a natural and collective reaction for all of us. (You apparently have misunderstood what gave me pause in 4everchan's initial wording.)

It was not my intention to prolong this sidebar discussion in the thread, but I quickly will share below an excerpt from my PM to 4everchan:

I honestly did not know that English is your third (or fourth?) language. Which I mean as a sincere compliment  -- meaning that your apparent ease (AFAIK) in composing frequent (and sometimes lengthy) posts led me to assume that you are a native speaker.
