Hi guys sorry I'm late to the party. NHK time zone coversions, man.
So it was a golden weekend for some of our skaters. And for the first time Canada has qualified skaters in each discpline to the Grand Prix Final.
Elladj and Nam...well those SPs were better than those FSs. With plenty of time to prep for Nationals let's see if things improve. For those debating Nam's speed please rewatch his 2016 Nationals performances. He was a snail. It's one of the areas he will probably be working on with his coaches. Another being actually getting GOEs for his jumps.
First time this season that Alaine has been unable to recover in the FS. Tough to see her so disappointed. I hope she's not discouraged and does what's needed for her to do her best. Some changes (esp. coaching) would be good, but maybe just a break might help. We need to start seeing 2016 Nationals Alaine regularly on the international scene - the fierce girl who kept her nerve after Gabby's great skate, did her best, and won the national title. The politics of skating and our skaters' inconsistencies may cause issues in getting a third spot for the ladies for the Olympics, but I want Alaine to have no regrets regardless.
Meagan and Eric - well that FS was going ok until a certain point when it came undone. Reading interviews it seems that Eric was jetlagged or tired for some reason. Just seeing a mistake in the lift was enough to convince me that something was completely off because Eric is rock solid in lifting. One good thing was seeing them nail the lift in the reprise during the gala. Meagan at the end

. It's ok girl, you'll get it together again. Doing poorly at NHK is nothing new. What's more important is fixing whatever can be fixed for the GPF. Their real aim isn't even GPF, it's Worlds (and maybe 4CC too), but it's good to get some extra $$ and accolades along the way. Meagan and Eric will also be performing in Madrid as part of Javier Ferandez's ice show on December 29, along with Shawn Sawyer. (Info:

Tessa & Scott - whoa. Seriously. It's like they listened to me. But they didn't. They took one look at those protocols at SCI and were like, "Nope." I've come to realize something. Continuously losing to Davis/White in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 really seems to have hammered home the point to them that technical consistency is rewarded above all else. You can have little to no chemistry, but if you're hitting those level 4s then who cares. Bock beat them in the FD at SCI with levels. It likely brought back some memories. I'm glad they and their team were able to look at the situation and improve it, setting the SD and total ice dance score WR in the process. The modified FD lift works better. They appear to be in a good head space. I heard that one of Scott's good friends passed away on November 23. So for him to compete this way was really admirable. Tessa gave him a lot of support too, which was great to see. I was a bit concerned about the cut on Tessa's leg that happened during the FD warm up, but they were able to put it behind them. Regardless of the outcome of the rest of the events this season, they have this title that they can be proud of. And frankly I'm just going to enjoy watching them. I missed them the past two seasons and I like watching them create special moments on the ice. Well done this weekend.
Leanna Caron did double duty. She was also judging ice dance. Tough as ever. I guess she was tough on everyone so maybe it's not so bad. We'll call her the Canadian Shin Amano.

NHK did appear to have quite astute judging.
