2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

The thing about Pogoriliya is she managed to stick around for bit longer than most of Russian ladies and shown she is capable of coming back over and over again. so she had more time to have bad skates...

I am a humble person and I have only one wish for this season - Alina, Evgenia and Liza to skate their gala programs one after another. I think no spectator would survive the heat.:laugh:

So what? This doesn't disprove my point that she's a headcase. Medals don't have anything to do with it (e.g. Kostner). I didn't say Pogorilaya was a substandard skater, but she is a headcase on her best days, and has been skating poorly enough in the past seasons to have been shaky on making it out of other Nats too (Japan / US).

Y'all make it sound like Russia is nixing potential Worlds medallists out of the race when that's hardly the case.

Just give it up already lol. People aren’t your side in your argument. :sarcasm:

Please don't use the term 'headcase'.

In many English speaking countries it's viewed as a disreputable and stigmatizing term for an athlete with sports psychological issues.

We spent a lot of time on another thread coming to understand that language is something to use with care around mental health.

Could we all keep that in mind? These ladies experience psychological stresses as late teens and early adults that many of us never experience in a lifetime. And as Liza Tuktamysheva's said, once they get beyond the Junior belief of invincibility, there is a great deal to manage.

I would like to know what she said exactly because she talked quite a lot after her skate. The thing is I can't find her comments on any YouTube video to replay (I watched a stream that hasn't been archived). I had Russian classes more than 15 years ago and my native language is Slavic but I'd rather rely on a native speaker to avoid any inaccuracies.
From what I remember - she criticized her harshly. She even said that she would give her StpSq Lv1 for what she showed on the ice.

What does everyone think of Stasya's chances for making the European or World team? Silver at her first GP is better than she ever did in juniors, and she made the junior (and senior) world teams. And was the Olympic alternate. All this within the context of politicking, of course! If one of Liza/Alina/Evgenia have mistakes at nationals and she manages to pull out a somewhat clean skate, would the fed knock one of them off for Staysa? They did knock off clean Gubanova for Staysa with serious errors, though Gubanova didn't have the reputation of olympic and world champions. But her (family's/TAT's) influence is powerful.

I think we will know after the SP at her next event. If she is in a similar position (within striking range of the podium) I surely won’t bet against her.

We still need to see what Masha has in store for us. Lots of reports and speculation but nothing I take very seriously. Masha has always been a fighter and her work ethic has never really been an issue. I surly won’t bet against her either

I honestly can't see them knocking Alina or Evgenia off the team no matter how badly they skate this year. Their fan bases and the media attention they draw are too big and nobody else has that pull. If she doesn't medal at nationals, which will honestly be cut throat this year with the influx of junior talent and realistically unless Alina and Sasha fall on their faces only one medal spot really up for grabs with 4 skaters with equally strong chances of getting it, I do think Liza will be in trouble when it comes to dishing out world places. I think she absolutely deserve to be there but idk, if they have skaters they want to push for political purposes this is really the only year they will have left to do it because next season the pool of raw, undeniable talent is going to get too big for political games and only continue in getting bigger over the next 3 years. It's currently unforeseeable when Russia will next have another season this quiet.

If she goes to nats, fed will give her the PCs and GOE necessary to make the senior top 3. They will not call her Lz. We would see stuff like Liza getting a +1 on a 3Lz, while Zhenya getting +4/+5 on hers.
I'd say its kind of simple - this year she has fed trust credit. If she does not go to nats, rusfed will give her the 3rd spot, because if they don't, they will admit they messed up and wasted money on Orser. People will be pissed, feces will hit the fan.

(Just in case, not blaming Zhenya for any of this)

While we may worry or not, I do not see how she would not make the team for euros and worlds this season, because that would be a huge blow on reputation of many decision makers. If fed spent any money on her training abroad, there is literally no way she will not make the team, because if that happens, rusfed will lose a lot of reputation internally for supporting and financing something expensive that didn't work.

so much nonsenses here.

They will not call her Lz
I bet they will, all of them

already not. she basically hadn't but this is another long topic

they will admit they messed up and wasted money on Orser
they are totally ready

only one rep is under the threat here, Medvedeva`s own

And there you guess they will be glad to spend even more not working money for another half of year for the sake of... let me think... really for what?

Let me explain this ongoing narrative. Medvedeva fails the championship, everyone can see that she made a mistake leaving Russia and this is completely satisfied all the acting faces. Except Medvedeva, but, you know... She shouldn't take any actions that could have been questioning the authority of Russian coaching school. The majority of them does not like Eteri so much for her unattainable success, but all of them hate aliens way more.

You know, before the FS at Skate Canada i'd have agreed with you to some extent because it was feeling a bit like what happened with Orser-Tursynbaeva.

"look at her improvements, she's getting there,..." lots of praises for Brian (perhaps even forced positivism) but everytime always off the podium, always making mistakes between the SP and the LP, and as time goes by that also made the skater itself less motivated, so instead of getting closer to the podium, she was regressing.

All these improvements are good but pointless if you lose your spot as a top contender.

Granted it could still not work out for Medvedeva, but her strong outing in the free in Canada made me realize that despite the changes she still wants to be a top skater, and she knows that means more consistent performances, so we have to give them time and look at the results at each competition before counting her out.

About Nationals scores i think a lot depend on GP France results and GPF: obviously Russia won't save those who bombs at Nationals (perhaps maybe Zagitova given her status), they can overlook things like underrotations (or call everything when they want to bring down someone), but when it's clear the performance is not there they can't do much, like when they decided to send Plushenko to the Sochi because Kovtun bombed big time even with inflated scores at the Europeans.

What's interesting about GP France is that Konstantinova and Sotskova will also be there and RusFed pushed these two skaters a lot in the past 2 seasons, in particular Konstantinova is now in a good spot cause she did well in Finland.

I think Stasya should’ve gotten bronze... (at Helsinki of course)

But she’s proven herself to be a contender as well. Last year’s competition at RusNats was hard, and yet she still made it to the 1st alternate spot. If she performs a not mediocre SP and another clean FS she could actually be near the podium.

Stasya's second GP will be pretty tough. She will be competing against Evgenia, Rika, Tennell, sotskova, Honda and Mihara.
I really hope they all skate clean and the best one wins!

As I said many times, I don't buy long-term Bejing argument. But I am against big conclusions at this time as well. We have to wait until the second GP, GPF (hopefully), and Rusnats. Only then will it make sense to judge.

TAT supported Zhenya's move. TAT is overall a good representative of what rusfed thinks - TAT loved Stasya, Stasya got fed support.
Also, many people don't like Eteri, because while she is good to russian FS interest, she may not be so nice for the interests of specific people.
If Medvedeva fails the rusnats this year, all those people will be unhappy. I'm pretty sure rusfed will appease them.

After rusnats, if any of Zhenya's lutzes gets a "!" or a "e", poke me, i'll pay you a coffee.

Well no :noshake:, you argue about Russian figure skating. In Russia, the minimum bet is a bottle of cognac.

You will lose. Even at her power peak she got ! all the time. Eteri team was smart to have just 1 lutz in 2 programs. I have not received a reasonable explanation why Orser (Borser) team introduced 3 lutzes without any visible edge improvements. Looks like masochism to me. May be they will come to their senses and change the layout. I was glad to see that Zhenya returned her signature move to the free program.

Alina is the OGM, so she'd be on the team by default regardless. Stasya may have comparable tech to a lot of the field, but her PCS is well behind. She can't compete with the top-tier PCS Zhenya is given and she can't compete with Liza's technical quality/3A. Plus, I expect that Liza's PCS will likely rise a bit as the season goes on. Europeans feels like a slightly different story, but it could lead to the same result.

My bet here is that they will not call them at rusnats this year.
