2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

poor Sofa
she wont get to Euros 90% now :ohwell:

Hopefuly she doesnt think about this too much - about spots & feds preference & focuses on task at hand, to skate like she usually does, cleanly!

A clean Tuks with some judging love
she wont get judging love anytime soon...sadly

Wouldn't be surprised to see judges overscore both Zagitova and Medvedeva to solve this conundrum
thats what Im thinking about...

she doesnt show that amazing results but I'll be so happy seeing Liza N at Nats!

What's this talk of Alina winning only 1 of 3 major competitions? The girl won the Olympics and last season's Europeans and GPF. If we count this year's GPF she's still won 3 out of 5.

Sorry, but Euros is not a Big 3, and the GP Final of 2017 was just that, in 2017. That said, 1 out of the last Big 3 is not just 'talk' but a reality.

But skating doesn't go by calendar year. It goes by seasons, and in the 2017-2018 season, Alina won 2 of the big 3 competitions. Europeans is also an ISU championship, which makes it a big competition as well. So Alina in fact did win 3 of the 4 big competitions that she was eligible for in 2017-2018.

For skaters representing European countries, Europeans are a very important competition, more important than the GPF. It's a very prestigious competitipn and has a long history. Olympics > World > Europeans > GPF.

Is Big 3 a thing? Is it usually Big 2 unless it's an Olympic year?

Based on competition level, i'd say big 3 is a thing.
Euros (3 top russians), GPF (3 top russians + some other top ladies), Worlds (3 top russians + all the other top ladies).

The thing is European Championships exclude participation of all competitors outside of the continent, including many of the top competitors of the World. Look at the podium of the past two World Championships. 5 of the 6 medalists were not from Europe. GPF, Olympics, Worlds are not limited by geographical location. As well, recent results have more weight in predicting future results. The momentum has been shifting away from Alina as demonstrated by the 2 most recent big comps.

1. There is a counterpart for Europeans, which means that everyone has 4 big comps in a calendar season (or 3 when there are no Olympics).
2. It's pretty low to say that momentum is shifting away from Alina based upon her worlds free skate. That was by far the worst she's ever skated, and she's grown both as a skater and as a person from it. Most Olympic champions don't even go to post-Olympic worlds. Alina did, despite being sick and having to attend many state functions that took away from her training time. You can't say that momentum is shifting away from her because of that. And Alina still held her own at the GPF this year, despite having a minor injury. Silver is not a loss.
3. No one is done after two competitions. Alina is competing at nationals - the biggest competition of them all objectively - and has a good chance to win, if not the BEST chance to win. So, no, momentum has not shifted away from her.

I agree with you completely. But there are cases when all the reasoning is futile. It is even funny at first like reading about "the most decorated skater of the previous quad". Then it gets boring. My problem is that sometimes I become irritated not being able to ignore the nonsense.

Thank you. What's this calendar year stuff? everyone knows figure skating goes by seasons. Someone making a point about calendar year is gilding the lily a little bit isn't it? ;)

Also spiral I've been wanting to ask you this with great skaters like Liza Yulia and Adelina why did Russia only have two spots for the ladies Olympic in Sochi in 2014? I would think that the 2013 World Championships would have included all three of them unless Yulia was too young.

Adelina and Liza didn’t do so hot in 2012-13 WC ;)

Yulia got hurt that year and missed GPF. She skated nowhere near 100% but did go to JWC (Silver). Yulia was a surprise in 2013-14 and wasn’t expected to be in the Olympic mix....and then she was

Yup. They had 3 spots - which went to Leonova, Sotnikova, and Tuktamysheva. Adelina was 9th with ~175 points, Liza was 10th just under her, and Leonova was 13th. So the sum of the best two placements was 19 (9+10) which was much greater than 13. So 2 spots for the Olympics. But they earned those spots back at worlds that year! With Yulia's silver medal and Anna's questionable 4th place

Absolutely more important than the Grand Prix final for a skater from Europe.
