2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I agree, sadly there was no way to make this a completely clean break for obvious reasons that you state here. But I think that Eteri is lashing out on an emotional level because she really did feel very connected to Evgenia after 11 years together, in a way that's different form her connection to other skaters imo. And now she feels that she was discarded in a dishonest way. In the news today she again said something along the line of her wanting Evgenia to seek her out (before they happen to meet during a grand prix) and say thank you at the very least.

Yes but Eteri made this difficult by taking very personal things public.

Hopefully she plans to do the same herself ;)

Overall, I find highly interesting how people hate Eteri here.
For example, why aren't those same folks bashing Plushenko for what he said about Sima? I recall Buyanova was pretty sincere when Adelina left her too.

The opposite situation with us, Many who supports Eteri
And Yes, I'm one of them)

I’ve always remained pretty neutral about Eteri. Even as one of Yulia’s fans I never spent much effort getting mad at Eteri or blaming her for anything. I don’t think she is immune from criticism though. Just like everyone else she makes mistakes and she can be a bit polarizing.

I'm not much into ladies' skating, but this whole mess has made me worry a little about the additional pressure - from a coach rightly or wrongly bitter and angry about being left - on Alina who's still there and who will even more be pushed to beat the 'deserter'...

Maybe I'm wrong, but it could get even uglier on that end.

I think part of it has to do with people idolizing their athletes and wanting everything in their lives to be perfect, while failing to recognize that success comes with a great deal of sacrifice. One of the most winning coaches in American basketball, Phil Jackson, is famous for having a huge ego but he managed to control his stars. You can't be a pushover to win.

I do wonder if the hatred for Eteri's strictness is part cultural. Growing up, I had piano teachers who were Chinese, Korean, and Russian and they also had a strict approach and required run-throughs of pieces over and over again during practice because that's how you improve. So when I see Eteri's behavior in the documentaries, I do think she's strict, but I don't have the same horrified reaction that are elsewhere in the forums.

Overall my view on the Eteri/Evgenia thing is relatively ambivalent. However, I do find it funny how if you go on other parts of this forum or read other internet discussion places for people who are ice skaters, they will also ask questions about switching coaches. All the advice given there is to handle it delicately, talk to the coach and assure them it's not personal or anything, and then leave on good terms. That was lacking here and I don't think people should dismiss it by saying "oh, Zhenya is a teenager," or whatever. It would have been decent to give her coach of 11 years a heads up.

But she undeniably has the right to leave as well, and I do think Eteri shouldn't have gone on TV and aired things out. I wish there wouldn't be such a negative reaction on both sides because then tempers run high and it makes the forums less fun to be on.

Eteri vs Evgenia is kinda "natural" drama, but what the heck is wrong with Zhelezyakov to add even more fire by criticizing Alina's PCS rise in today's interview and claiming that "whole world says Evgenia should have got gold, but it went to Alina"? Dude, I like your dance vids, but you should know better when to keep your mouth shut.
Plus, afterwards he went to Alina's VK group and berated fans for bringing his interview up, saying they're creating unnecessary tension within the group(!). :palmf:

Also, pair skating coach, Ludmila Velikova claims Dudakov once told her, he believes the girls are going to lose quads when they grow up. Bye. :dbana:

Skaters find new coaches first all the time. The fact though the Med went to the meeting with Orser refusing to complain about her previous coach shows that she wanted to handle it in a classy respectful manner.

We don't know went down between her and Eteri that got her not to respond, but I have all kinds of respect that she just wanted a new environment. As for her saying that about Alina so she said something like that in a emotional moment. That hardly makes her a horrible person and Eteri could have kept it quiet.

Very good post and my thoughts exactly.

What would happen in 2 or 3 years time if things don't really work out with Orser? Wishful thinking would suggest that she would come back to Eteri.

Eteri's reaction was rather disappointing, but maybe she was taken by surprise and didn't know how to cope. Not that her reaction was appropriate....Ultimately I just wish that the both of them can still see eye to eye when they meet in Russia or at competitions.

He was low-profile, doing fine job in the group, until couple months ago they interviewed him, then again and again and every time he's been selling more and more details about the skaters. I hope Eteri will remind him, what's his role on the team. :furious:

Which event are most likely to see the Russian Rumble, Alina vs Evgenia. Will it be before the Grand Prix Final?

Good heavens Ive been wondering where you are!

The whole world does not think Zhenya deserved gold. She was very good but Alina was a touch better with a tougher program. Hence more points for Alina. I never imagined this would cause issues with Zhenya did you?

If the girls dont grow over 5 feet tall they may be able to pull off quads after puberty.

Dunno, but this is going to be again quite an exciting showdown for the two EX teamates. Lets see how orsers magic works on evgenia.

These are his exact words.

"This young girl (Trusova) doing quads now, how is she going to be when she's 17 or 18?'' Orser said. "It's all fun, with everybody marveling on social media about her, but it could be a very short-lived phenomenon."
Not very nice thing to say about 13yo girl, who made history and her country so proud... :scowl:

Best junior girl ever needs to be praised not criticized.
